PWA200
Hi folks, I'm moving down to Aus in January and I'm going to buy myself a 4x4. Which one, in your humble opinion, is best for Aus? Do any of you have one of these cars? 1) Toyota Landcruiser 70 2) Nissan Patrol 3) Land Rover Defender Looking forward to any comments!
CaptainR
You didn't add the Landcruiser Prado, for a bit of compromise and comfort. Landcruiser 70 wins hands down for most applications, and if touring more likely to find parts in remote places,

Don't live in aus tbh,but if i was i would buy an Isuzu, don't think i seen one over there though? I would buy Japanese before a Land Rover or European though fwiw
Suzukiscottie
"Best for Aus" is very subjective. Depends on what is best for the drivers requirements really. Most 4x4's only go off-road to park on the nature strip!

WeegieDave
I'd only buy a 4x4 if you intend on doing some off-road driving. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste your cash. That aside, I'd buy a Prado!

VERYSTORMY
I depends on what you want it for. If you intend to use it to go off roading a lot, then a land cruiser is always the number one choice.
stevie ellis
As long as its Japanese can't go wrong, try a pajero? Like them. Aw the best with whatever you choose
CaptainR
Or you could be an idiot like me and buy a 4x4 that can't actually go off-road.... BMW X5, but at least can do the 1 mile school run and park in no parking zones or on the kerb or blocking people's driveway....

It is without a shadow of a doubt one of the nicest cars I've owned, is very comfortable and great as a family car. Barely copes on gravel roads though. Dorset
The Patrol/Landcruiser debate is a bit like the Holden/Ford discussion - it is expected everyone takes sides. We went looking for a second hand Patrol/Landcruiser and took the best deal on offer and at the time it was a Patrol. Our Patrol has done us proud, but like others have said if you are not going to go down roads that require the higher ground clearance you may as well go for an AWD - they generally have better comfort, handling and fuel economy. Which ever one you go for, if second hand, I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing to look for corrosion underneath the car. If people have driven on the beach or dipped the back end into the sea to launch boats the car may have a rust problem.
PWA200
Still can't decide! Its between Land Cruiser 70 Wagon GXL vs Nissan Patrol ST. I decided the Defender is a no-go. Nissan is cheaper but the engine is smaller and I'm not sure if its as tough as the cruiser. I am going to take the car properly off road none off this sissy nonsense! Prado doesn't have proper off road suspension/ground clearance at the front I was told? Think I'm edging towards the Land Cruiser 70......................... I might hire one for a day and see what its like (probably really bad on tarmac).

PWA200
From my research: Patrol Y61 (standard): $60,027 Land Cruiser 70 (wagon): $66,500 So about $7'000 difference. Land Cruiser seems to keep its value more as well............
furkew
From my research: Patrol Y61 (standard): $60,027 Land Cruiser 70 (wagon): $66,500 So about $7'000 difference. Land Cruiser seems to keep its value more as well............ Are you planning on going offroad or touring or just want a mall crawler with big tyres? the landcruisers are excellent cars especially for long distance touring, but once you look at options, they can get very expensive. They do keep their value far better than most other 4x4. bear in mind as well, if you plan on modifying the car for touring/offroading with either dealership or aftermarket options, $10,000.00 is gone before you even blink. (they call them stealerships over here BTW, so aftermarket is normally the way to go) Patrols are very good, but IMO the 4.2 is still the best. Patrols also keep their value quite well. Prado's are "ok" offroad, but aren't as well built as landcruisers or patrols. If you really want to get out and play in the mud and dirt, Probably the best offroad 4x4 straight off the production line that gives you the best bang for your buck is the jeep wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. front & rear lockers standard, electrionic sway bar disconnects and heaps more. definitely cheaper than both the land cruiser & patrol, but not as much room. advantage is, you get a soft & hard top, and can even take off the doors to get that outdoor feel If you can afford the extra cost and want comfort, reliability & space for a car that will take you all around Australia, I would say the landcruiser all the way. If you want to tackle some of the harder roads/tracks that Australia has to offer, and get places that most people never get to see both the patrol & the jeep rubicon are much better suited for the harsh Australian terrain. PWA200
Hi furkew, Thats some great input! I'm planning on going offroad/touring. Whats your opinion of the Patrols 3.0L turbo diesel - do you think its underpowered? Is the 3.0L diesel quite reliable? I was always told the patrols drive train is very strong compared to most 4WDs. I done quite a lot of offroad in the middle east and always thought the large V8 petrols were best on the sand, though I don't know how much sand driving is done is Aus? Now I'm leaning towards the Patrol (after looking at a few today!)
furkew
where are you heading? NSW, WA, VIC, SA, NT? is a new car a necessity or would you be prepared to look at 2nd hand if its a better option?
PWA200
Will be in WA, probably going to buy a new one (had some bad experiences with 2nd hand cars in the past!)
VERYSTORMY
Ok, I am a proffessional explorer. I spend most of my working life off road. The first car I would strike off my list is a Jeep. Maybe even before I struck off a Hyundai Getz. a horrid piece of plastic that handles as well as a horrid piece of plastic can and has the off road ability as a horrid piece of plastic. Bith te of your original options are good - patrol and land cruiser. If if it is going to be purely a second car for off road, then I would sway to a land cruiser tray back 7 series. I like the following configuration (which Toyota can do as extras) twin in long range fuel tanks roll bar configured into emergency water supply front and back winches incorporated de-bogging tray for equipment phumatic pull down twin tyre cages Then a range of specialist ad ons. VERYSTORMY
Excellent option. Go for one with less bells and whistles in the electrics as more reliable. Diesal is is a must if going to remote areas as some don't sell petrol.
