Ha ha, me too (my mam can't see this can she??)

I got £1 a day, a baked potato was 15p which left 85p for 10 fags :)

No wonder I was skinny in those days!

And I thought I was the only one!!! Both you and QSS have made my day, but I could only afford a packet of 5

Evidence shows that children who are well nourished learn better. It is also an opportunity for development of social interaction and communication skills as all children eat together and have the opportunity to socialise. Although it seems a bit extreme to roll this out for all children, as someone pointed out earlier, it is not necessarily poor children who don't get fed properly by their parents. This way, no child misses out. Its a bit sad that it is necessary but it seems to have been very successful in those areas that piloted it. I think it is one of the nicer things to have been imposed onto schools.

I think a hot meal at School is absolutely the right thing for Children - the cost is irrelevant for me (I don't consider myself fortunate enough to pay, I'd find a way of paying if I couldn't - thankfully I can..and it £80 a term......). I pay for my Son as he is out of the age bracket, but my Daughter gets the benefit. I'm passionate about this as I've experienced both sides.

Here (UK) at School my Son gets a plentiful volume of nutritional food - you should see the menu, I kid you not, Salmon, Chicken, Cottage Pie, things I can't even say .....He is always full and content which fuels his mind as well as his body. It also supports us parents with discipline and table manners and how to conduct himself at the table. His manners are impeccable. He thanks whoever cooked his Dinner and always asks to be excused from the table, beit at School and at Home, and willingly helps tidy up.

I saw a different side at School in OZ where he had packed lunch every day as School meals were not available - which of course got boring, wasn't as filling or nutritional and the School culture allowed the kids to eat outside in the grounds of the School unsupervised which often led to riotous behaviour, and he lost a lot of weight.

So anyone who moans about the cost or think its wrong to feed our Children with hot filling nosebag at School which is paid for by us the taxpayer anyway, get real!

Hhmm, please ignore my reference to costs/tax payers etc. I misunderstood the thread and fingers engaged before brain ! Thought it was about School meals in general......still a good idea BTW and I'm still happy to pay:)

Haven't read all the comments......but free school meals are a fantastic idea.....a lot of kids go to school with nothing nutritional in their lunch box, crisps, chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks are no good to anybody, especially young growing children.....the country is not just looking out for the children from lower income areas....its also looking out for those kids that come from a middle class back ground with busy parents that think its ok to give them a bag full of junk food for lunch.....it will have a beneficial effect on the younger generation as they grow up hopefully resulting in better all around diets and healthier adults......all this coupled with the banning of the traditional school tuck shop can only be a good thing!

Most schools do not provide meals at all only tuck shop things like chips, lollies etc. Packed lunches are the normal and the only hot food you will see is a hot dog or sausage roll. Schools her do not have cafeterias, you eat outside, so a full hot lunch is not possible to serve.

That may be the norm in high school, but healthy eating is considered very important and long gone are the tuck shops. Primary chools are lolly free zones as regards to buying from the canteen.

Hot meals and cold are provided daily in most schools as well, but eaten in the classrooms or outside in the warm weather. High schools of course are more likely to have actual seated areas in their canteens.

This is great! But they should not treat kids to horse meat from Romania

Why?

I do agree that where possible locally sourced products (whether horse meat or meat from another animal or other produce) should be provided but councils have to balance ethics with budgets and in any case the ethics are complex. The cradle to grave CO2 emissions of tomatoes grown in East Anglia can be higher than those imported from Spain.

Not even going to get into horse meat that's a personal ethical choice & I don't think schools can cater for every individuals choices but as far as I know all provide a choice so horse meat would not be the only thing on the menu. Personally we don't eat any meat and there is always something on the menu my son can eat, my work canteen is not so accomodating, today it was chicken soup and steak pie!

I cant believe in this day and age some school Tuck shops apparently only sell lollies and chips. We must have been lucky with the schools we choose,,most of our Tuck shop food is home made, some things on the menu are

-Raisin Toast -$1

-Vegemite Scrolls - $2

-Corn on the cob - $1.50

-Home made Lasagne - $4.50

-Roast Beef and gravy roll - $3.50

- Jacket potato with bacon shallots and lit sour cream -$4.50

-Grilled Chicken Burgers - $4.50

-Salad Tubs inc lettuce, carrot, tomato, beetroot, egg etc - $5 added coked meats for $1 extra

- Sandwiches avail on White or Wholemeal bread with cooked meats - $4

-Sweet chilli wraps with salad -$4.50

-Rice crackers -10c

-Bolied Eggs - 50c

Fruit salad tubs -$1.50

Banana Bread - $1.00

Frozen Yogurt - $2.50

Ice blocks ,- various 50c to $2

Fruit Smoothies -$2.50

The menu changes every term always offering a decent selection and the tuck shop is open 5 days a week for Breakfast and lunch, i find this, paired with packed lunches a few days a week offers a great choice for my child.

We def never had things like rice crackers lol. I was so fussy at primary school - I only liked certain things and I'd refuse to eat most things plus I was good at making it look like I had eat more than I had. The school did really good puddings though lol. At high school we had two canteens - one was things like baguettes etc and the one down the bottom was the one where you could get chips, burgers etc but that's where all the chavs went lol so I mostly stayed away from there
