advice needed on best time of year to move

Applied for 489 visa mid may, have a case officer and meds etc uploaded just awaiting final decision on grant,so hopefully not long now. I have decided to quit work as soon as i have confirmation so i can work for an agency flat out and earn more than double to help with funds.

I am hoping if i get an answer soon, to make the move mid November to SA. Does anyone see any problems moving out at that time regarding rentals or jobs. I know close to xmas, but hoping as not in December i might get sorted prior to it going a little quiet over holiday season.

Or subsequently if to late for that option due to visa grant thinking very end of year as flights im presuming are cheaper, then gives me still 2 weeks to have a good feel for the place before things return to normal mid Jan.

Thanks Tina x

I suppose if you have a skill in demand, you will get a job at any time, but it does get quiet between Xmas and Australia Day (26th January) when the school holidays are on, and many people take their annual holidays.

Coming in November may mean you spend Xmas and New Year on your own, if that is important to you?

I don't know? I came at the beginning of November, and could not get a job until the end of January, not that I regretted coming when I did. You could spend Xmas and New Year at home, then come out for a month of getting aclimatised, before looking for jobs proper in February?

Ty for reply MaryRose, i am in nursing so hopefully not as quiet on recruitment and if anything like the UK needing staff at that time of year, even agency (my thinking anyway) ooooo i hope it does not take till Feb to get sorted but hey ho if it does.

As for xmas, well me and my family have had it in mind i wont be here this xmas and made most of it last year with few nights in London over new year together. If im here i will be working at that time as they gave me of last year and daughter with her father so i dont mind a quiet xmas just want to get plans into action now....so near yet still so far! ty

If my visa were granted this side of Christmas, I would definitely look to spend a final Christmas in the UK before moving out. Christmas just isn't the same here, you might find you really miss a British, wintery Christmas. It is something I have seen many, many people comment on those "what do you miss most" type of threads. It would also be a great way to say good bye to everyone.

Wouldn't move between beginning of November and end Jan or even mid Feb. Things really do close down then there are people transferring, students moving etc which puts a bit of pressure on real estate. Better to arrive after it's all settled down again.

I'd either move sooner (by Nov) or defer until Feb. Really hard to get a rental in Dec/Jan. If you're a nurse you may have a pragmatic approach to Xmas but it really can tug at the heart strings even for those who desperately want to be here. Xmas is not the big deal it is in The UK (which I do like - no protracted run up from Sept) but it can be the loneliest of times. Having said that you'd be guaranteed some great weather

Was just about to say the same as CP...if you have a rental secured prior to arriving, until the end of feb, then possibly...but UK Christmas is the best..something you won't recognise until you've spend one in oz. Rentals during dec/jan are not the best time to look..they are limited, we found a few but much less choice and ended up paying more than we wanted as the one we saw that was in our price range got taken by somebody else, presumably by somebody with oz history, a job etc..

real estate agents do not go out of there way as they have more than enough ppl wanting to rent so they basically don't care if you or somebody else that gets the place...they have an easy job as ppl always want accommodation.

once you are tied into a place, min six months you start to collect stuff. We thought after six months we will move out into something cheaper..it never happened as u get furniture and it's the expense of moving your things etc. we got this place as it was nice, over our budget and needed somewhere to live. Had we waited until feb we would have had much more choice and probably stuck within our budget.

Things do shut down over here over Xmas and January as it's holiday season. Private hospitals are quieter as specialists are on holidays so they operate less, few wards even get closed. Public hospitals maybe not so much but probably bit quieter for elective surgery. Depends what type of nursing you do. You'd probably find it easier to find a job you're after from February onwards.

Your decision where you'd like to spend Xmas - in the cold or the sunshine?!

I wouldn't move until after the main holiday season. Money evaporates here when you are not working and just like the other members said, it is pretty hard to get a rental during the holiday months. If I was you, I would spend one more Christmas at home. Good luck with your decision and your move!

Agree totally. We came out 4th December. It took us 6 weeks to get a rental and we didn't end up in the location wanted, but panicked and took a property which probably wasn't in the best location to help us settle. Also We missed the UK Christmas and our family. So I would say come out between Feb and September.

I've got a friend who is a nurse, and he works casual shifts, preferring to work when he wants to, but I'm sure he said something about shifts drying up over the summer holidays. I must check with him.

It does not really matter when you come. I hate changing my plans once I have a date settled. Come in October/November, and it's the end of spring/beginning of summer, so probably a nice time to leave UK? Of course, if you were to leave immediately after New Year, well, it's cold and drab and grey and everybody has 'maxed' out on their credit cards, and thinking how it's six months before the sun arrives, whilst you are flying off to 'Paradise' right now!

Sydney is usually booked out everywhere over Xmas and New Year for the fireworks on NYE, but once that is over, you can get rooms OK (I think - must do a hostel search and confirm that?) Of course, many people are on holiday from Xmas Eve to OZ Day, but there's still plenty happening in the cities. As long as you have enough money to tide you over?

thank you to everyone for your replies, yes after much research on initial accommodation over xmas and new year prices sky rocket.

Alot of good points made and whilst i don't have an overflowing money pot, i think wise not to arrive December.Unfortunately i cant do prior to November as was 1 suggestion as tieing up loose ends is taking time.

The weather i don't mind but of course will be a shock after leaving uk.

However i have now decided it will be mid Jan around the 12th,i have looked up multi flights and planning to spend time in Dubai and peshawer seeing and visiting some very close friends/family. Due to time of year not to much more in cost actually, so hopefully shall miss the majority of the slowdown as well as giving myself a few days to prepare for the rush of sorting out home and job.

On the plus side it allows me a few extra weeks nursing with an agency prior to departure and earn that extra much needed money and get to see my dad over xmas prior to now planned departure of 29/30 December. its took this long so whats an extra 6-8 weeks! but............i have no patience to wait for anything lol, but im learning after this process!

I saw my nursing friend last night and he confirmed that he finds the agency work dries up in January/February, which is why he's trying to secure a more permanent contract at one of the big public hospitals.

Arriving in the middle of January, I guess you will need at least a couple of weeks to settle in, get accomodation, find your way around, so it all sounds OK to me?

Thanks for finding that out for me. Yes arriving mid jan allows me another couple of weeks to get essentials done and hopefully allows for everything to return to normal. i really dont want to wait much longer, i just want to move on now eeek excited.

i have even provisionally booked accommodation for 3 weeks on arrival with options to amend arrival dates and pay on arrival. was more than half less than arriving in december did not want to lose that one lol. i was shocked!

i expect delays in things and nothing to land in my lap but your advice has been invaluable and much appreciated and has allowed me to make a little wiser choices xx
