Britains getting a bashing

We're sat on Yorkshire and whilst we've had a few very windy days that's been about it. It's hard to believe that a few hundred miles South they are having a horrid time, some places have been underwater for weeks.

The Tories have decided to act now that the Thames valley has been affected though, typical MP's (not just Tories) if it affects London or the areas immediately surrounding it then they'll find the money to sort it!

The Thames Valley has been affected for many weeks with many places flooded before Christmas. The flooding in Somerset initially was the worst and therefore had most of the headlines. Flooding also affecting the Severn and others now and there is the coastal damage from all the storms.

Some who see this as a north v south thing are misguided. There have been areas flooded in the past but many peoples homes, businesses and schools round here are expected to be flooded for months. Never seen anything like it in my lifetime.

I know the floods in 2007 were bad but they were very localised and it was summer so conditions weren't as harsh. I spoke to a friend this week who lives in Tewkesbury, which is a island again. It's heartbreaking when you hear from people actually living in it. There was an interesting piece in The Guardian this week about David Cameron's response.

I wish it wasn't so, but I doubt anything meaningful will happen. The floods will subside, eventually and the media will move on to something else, until the next time!?

Takes the flooding of a 'Royal' borough to bring them out  Didn't see them filling sandbags in 2007 when half of South Yorkshire was under water.

Its entirely possible both of them were serving at the time.

ETA - To give my post context and keep it topical to the thread, if we were in the UK living now, the area where I spent many happy years living is under water. And has been for a fair while. And most likely will be for the forseeable future. Many people I know are affected by this, not just their homes but their livestock and livelihoods. Given the Gov prioritises homes over land, goodness knows what will happen to them.

Misguided I may be but I'll guarantee you thank the term "money is no object" wasn't uttered when Cumbria or South Yorkshire was awash. A dam wall was nearly washed away is South Yorkshire, I think that may count as serious damage, did we see the troops on the streets?

No the North/ South divide doesn't exist does it?

Just to add William has never served operationally overseas.

Baz. I realised while eating brekfast my reply to you was veering off topic. And so I added another paragraph to my post to ensure I stayed on topic and didn't take the thread off at a tangent again :) Am not going to debate the Royals helping out or their lack of it in 2007 further out of respect to the OP.

Don't do yourself down snifter I don't think you took the OP off topic at all.

Essentially what was meant by that was that there wouldn't be a financial limit to the relief work. That said this is not something that you can throw money at anyway so is a meaningless statement like most made by politicians.

The floods are fortunately not affecting my own property but I would have empathy with those that were suffering regardless of where in the country they lived. This has directly affected tens of thousands of people severely throughout much of England and Wales and it is unfortunate when some see it as an opportunity to make it a north/south divide issue.

I am sure there will be those who say that floods have been just as bad as this elsewhere and that may possibly be the case however so much populated land being flooded to this extent over such a long period would be a major disaster wherever it occurred in the UK.

The ground has been completely saturated for the past few weeks now so even a return to normal levels of rain over the coming weeks and months will keep topping up the flooded areas.

I am going to be a horrible person, however cannot help having a snigger that the wonderful south is getting the battering, the people who think the northern parts are another world never to be considered

The wonderful south west has some pretty deprived areas - it's not all fancy second homes for Londoners. Personally I think that this would be a tragedy wherever it takes place. Heart goes out to everyone affected

My back garden was a bit like a building site anyway atm, while i do the hse up,inside nearly done

Ive taken all the old plants out of the planter boxes, took all the cobblestones out too till i put new plants in,and laid them all out on the decking, but the gales have done me a favour in a way,i had rush screening over the walls, looking a bit tired now,so decided to take it off and paint the walls instead, got up the other day and its all in the garden lol,so saved me a job,its taken apart the table and garden chairs too!but they're only those crappy green plazzy things anyway, and i was always getting a more sturdy set

So the back is like a tip,and will be until i get a midi skip, then everything is getting binned from the back, including the grass, flag and gravel going down,no time for gardening now,but no chance of painting etc till the weather changes,be done end of april i think, leaves just a few months for it to sell or not,if it doesn't i wont be going to aus,but at least i wont be living in limbo any more, sick of it now tbh

......this is a devastating time for so many.......

......I have just looked at the Internet news and it's heartbreaking to see.......

......we so often take for granted our homes and towns......

.......and to see them being destroyed is awful......

........I am fortunate that none of the people I know have suffered....

........and those who were in a flooded area were lucky to be able to move their homes to higher ground....

.........I do hope that no more are hurt ,personally or property wise is this awful storms....

.........take care people of Great Britain.....!

I can't believe some comments I've read, I've luckily not been affected other than an odd slate off the roof, but that doesn't mean my heart doesn't go out to those whose lives have been turned upside down. Regardless of which country these natural disasters happen in, then people should be showing empathy for others, and not sneering that it's happened in the UK etc. It would be like me gloating that parts of Australia had been burnt to a crisp and people had lost their lives and all the wildlife that had been burnt alive, but so long as it's not in my neck of woods, then all is well! Terrible!

Yes go on have a little snigger that people have lost their homes, livelihoods and in some cases their lives, it's hilarious especially as they live in the south :nah:
