I want to live the dream

hi all,

I have recently (this past weekend) returned from my second holiday to Melbourne. I love the place so much that i want to get back there on a permanent basis. I am a 35 yr old from Shropshire. I work within the IT industry having worked on Government, Telecommunications, Defence, Education and many more areas within my role as a Software Tester / IT Consultant.

Can anyone please advise me what my best options for making the dream come true would be.

does anyone have any contacts within the IT industry they could share with me.

Thanks

Jonathan

Hello, start with the department for immigration website and work out the best visa for you. There is a points calculator on there which should help you decide on eligibility. Alternatively you can speak to a migration agent. My husband works in IT - well, SAP but he found it relatively easy with his skills to get work and IT seems to be in demand. Good luck with it.

Get in touch with PlanIT - the managing director is Chris Carter, you'll find him on Linked In - they are actively recruiting in the UK at the moment to sponsor candidates.

Software Testing is not on the CSOL so employee sponsorship is probably your best option - make sure you are aware of the pitfalls of a 457 visa though especially if you have a family. PlanIT are a decent company though.

Don't forget though that a holiday is very different from living somewhere - there is no 'living the dream'!

Let me know how you get on with this and any other leads, I have now returned to the UK and set up a UK division of a Melbourne based company and my business partner has a lot of contacts in software testing in Melbourne.

Good luck!

This thread is of interest to me since my husband is seeking sponsorship as an IT Security Consultant (Penetration Tester / Security Specialist). We're aware of the pitfalls of a temp visa but I honestly don't believe anyone would go down the 457 route as a first option, so if they are considering it then it's probably - as in our case - their last option! We have to hope and pray that things work out, I guess :-)

If anyone has any contacts in the IT Security industry then please get in touch! There is a slight possibility that he may be able to get an intra-company transfer (which of course would be easier than endless Skype job interviews, starting with a new company, proving oneself all over again, etc.) but we don't want all our eggs in the one basket, so we're going to explore both avenues :-)

Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread, Jonathan, and good luck with the job hunting (try http://www.seek.com.au) :-)

i was in contact with Mike Norris of Planit and i did take a trip down to their Melbourne office but nobody was available to speak to at the time. I am currently sorting y CV out and getting it professionally written for me but i will contact Chris Carter and start things rolling with them as i have heard Planit are a very good company to work for..

Thanks for the heads up...

Please, as Lady Rainicorn says, drop the idea about "living the dream". Living and working in Melbourne is not a dream, it's just a place to live and work. Same old worries, just a different street plan. Some things are better and some things are worse than back home. But if you imagine it is "living the dream" you are likely to become quickly disillusioned.

Are PlanIT actively recruiting to sponsor people because they can get people cheaper than paying IT people already here LR?

Genuine question, I'm not trying to stir things, just interested as I hear the IT game isn't exactly booming and I thought there would be enough people here without bringing more in.

Like you, I worry about anyone who thinks they will 'live the dream'. Work is still work, commuting is still commuting, bills are still bills. House prices are painful and its a pricey place to live. But given that you have to do the work, commuting, bills etc stuff somewhere, Melbourne is a pretty good place to do it.

Of course there is such thing as living the dream!

Life is what you make it. Yes it can be different to a holiday but it does not mean you're not living the dream. Australia is an amazing country, good luck to you Jonathon.

Which is presumably why everyone is Australia is perpetually happy, upbeat and sings on the train to work. Look, migration is a positive experience for many, a negative experience for some, but most of us who have done it realise that "living the dream" is just a nonsense phrase to cover the lack of any deep thought on the matter. Those who end up facing the biggest disappointment are those who went with the highest expectations.

Poor bloke asks a question about IT recruitment and the trolls are out. Couldn't you start a separate (yet another) thread to do the bashing?

I wasn't trying to troll - trying to help the poor bloke by letting him set realistic expectations that would enhance his chances of making a successful move.

Let's not start off down the path of bashing each other or arguing please.

This is the welcome forum. Keep it civil and hopefully help the guy out with which visa to look at and all that.

Thanks in advance.

Wishing you lotsa luck, Jonathon, it is a great country to be in.

Been 'living the dream' for 50 years and still in wonderment at what it holds.

Remember, it's what you put into your life that counts, work at it and you will win.

Cheers, Bobj.

So what does 'living the dream' mean?

For me I love the climate, being near the beach which we use daily, the free parking there so we can be down and parked within 50 metres of the beach in 2 mins. The parks, my time off work, every weekend, when we feel like we are on holiday, the kids have jobs, we have jobs, we can manage the mortgage easily.

It was what we dreamed about before we came. What we imagined the place could be like and it's lived up to our expectations.

Where we lived in the UK none of that was available and we used to pay for a couple of weeks every year where we had the equivalent of what we have here. Maybe not as close to the beach though, a foreign language to contend with and the cost of a hotel.
