paulv
Just 2.27% of the UK is built upon - there's plenty of green and pleasant land left thanks, regardless of scaremongering by vested interests such as migrationwatch and the MP who owns (and rents out) 24 houses! Perhaps if he freed up some of his portfolio we would have less pressure on housing resources? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18623096

Petals
The pressure to expand will make living in the towns unbearable, just like they are doing in all cities in the world. So people will demand the release of more green acres by their votes I guess. Its only a matter of time. Its no good thinking I am alright Jack so no development. There is enough "brown field" land to keep us going as long as immigration is controlled and brought down to a sustainable level but no need to panick, we just need to vote on our feet. paulv
Here are some business leaders demanding that migration controls be loosened in the interests of the UK's long term fiscal survival... http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/27/net-migration-cap-damages-britain "The government's net migration cap is hurting Britain's economic recovery and long-term fiscal health (It's not racist to be anxious over large-scale immigration, 23 December). It can take around three months for a business to apply for a visa for a prospective employee, a significant unseen cost of the cap, and international firms may prefer to base themselves in countries where they can bring in staff from abroad more easily than they can in the UK. Entrepreneurship is being affected, too: more than a quarter of Silicon Roundabout startup founders are foreign-born, and more than half of tech startups in California's Silicon Valley are founded by immigrants. The cap on immigration is a cap on the innovative industries Britain needs to thrive. According to the Office for Budget Responsibility, without net immigration of at least 260,000 people per annum, public debt will approach 100% of GDP by 2060 as we struggle to pay for a ballooning pensions and healthcare bill. Countless studies have shown immigrants create jobs, raise natives' real wages and even boost productivity. Public concerns about benefits tourism are legitimate but are better addressed by reforms that restrict access to the welfare state. The migration cap does not discriminate between the small number of would-be welfare tourists and the many people who would like to work productively to create a better life for themselves and their families. The cap is hurting Britain and should be scrapped. Que Sera Sera
Its funny I used to work in the Centre of Bristol and I used to like to go for a walk lunchtimes and it was horrendous most times , like trying to walk through herds of cattle or sheep people everywhere. I'm a country gal and like open spaces, not for me city living,

I'm a country gal and like open spaces, not for me city living, I'm the exact opposite, I love the countryside and acknowledge its beauty but after 'few days I crave the hustle and bustle, I am comforted by the sound of trains and buses, peoples voices etc... Jacaranda
No I'm no city slicker either tbh!Nah not scared at all by that news article. My OH read out a news piece a while ago that said only 6% of the UK is urban. For those in doubt, get on your wellies, head out to the countryside and start walking!!!!I usually dont meet a soul on my walks!Thats what I love about this country! Most of it is walkable and not private land! flybyknight
'tis funny to read, the thread on here recently that suggests the uk will have the strongest economy in europe by 2030, mainly due to the increase in population. and this thread suggesting we should cap migration to the uk for its wellbeing. i'd love to see how this is gonna work! it just shows the loyalties of the british press, its nice to see it highlighted so graphically. Melb3000
The UK has over ten times the population of the state of Victoria but is roughly the same size. Either the cities and larger towns in the UK are many times denser or a much higher percentage of land is urban, or both, how else does this equation work? EDIT: 21% of the land in UK was urbanised in 2004 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_England#Land_use

Either the cities and larger towns in the UK are many times denser or a much higher percentage of land is urban, or both, how else does this equation work? I suspect the cities and towns are many times denser. There aren't that many big cities in Victoria (compared with the UK anyway) and even if the housing density in Melbourne is twice that in Adelaide it will be far less densely populated that many of the cities in the UK. Here in Adelaide we have very little in the way of high rise buildings, or even low rise buildings to be honest. That's not to say there aren't spread out and less densely populated places in the UK, but there is a lot more intro way blocks of flats and tightly packed housing than you get in your average Australian city and suburbs. Ah so your opinion is a 'true opinion' but mine is a 'non true opinion'? And I can assure you one visit in half a century was enough.. It's still the same old dump it always was, and that's 'my opinion', make of it what you will..........

Glad I'm not there tbh I agree. __________________________ I know the DM is routinely ridiculed, but I suppose it's possible that they do write some decent stuff?? Certainly they can be relied upon to ensure the World knows what an horrendous place the UK is. I wonder at the mental processes of those who actually want to live here/ want to return here /are happy here? Surely we should admire the migrants- illegal or otherwise, the Romanians/ Bolivians and Swazilanders for their courage in coming to the living hell they are about to experience. For my money I hold in the utmost respect the opinions of those in Australia, or those planning to go to Australia who show yet again that their decision was correct in leaving this cesspool for Paradise. The demarcation line of Australian Wisdom so clearly showing on this thread. Thank-you, from the bottom of my heart. (I think I got that the wrong way around). Why is it all so incessantly predictable?
