The 14 worst Human Rights myths

Is this one of those wrong uns that @beachpig talks about abusing the Human Rights Act? "A rape victim falsely accused of lying by detectives has won £20,000 in damages after suing police under the Human Rights Act. The woman, who cannot be named, was 17 when a man raped her in Winchester in April 2012 after a night out with friends. Her mother reported the attack hours later and the victim told officers her T-shirt may contain her attacker’s DNA. But the garment was never sent for forensic testing and weeks later the girl, who has mental health problems, was accused of lying about the rape and arrested for perverting the course of justice. During the arrest, one detective told her: “This is what happens when you lie.” Documents seen by the Guardian reveal that detectives from Hampshire police decided within two days of the rape report that the girl was lying. A detective inspector, who was supervising the inquiry, told a junior colleague: “****ing nick her.”" http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/may/22/victim-falsely-accused-of-lying-by-uk-hampshire-police-wins-payout This is why we need a strong legal framework to protect those who need a voice - to hold the powerful to account.

The 14 worst Human Rights myths

If you read any of the site you will see that for each 'myth' there is a link to an article in one of the usual papers misrepresenting complex legal issues in line with their anti-EU/anti-Human Rights agendas. So the site corrects very specific myths perpetrated by those who want to be able to do whatever they want with your privacy, your rights, your freedom. But maybe you are right and rather than deal with facts I will be so cynical as to believe that everyone in the world acts purely out of self interest. What a dark place you must live in.

Given that the rightsinfo site was set up by the leading Human Rights barristers in the UK to highlight the scope of their work and correct misconceptions and myths, I'll take their knowledge over your opinion.

"This is the Ukip official masterminding Nigel Farage’s campaign to become an MP – pictured in his days as a leading figure in the National Front. Martyn Heale, current chairman of Mr Farage’s party in Thanet South, was head of a London branch of the racist organisation. Mr Heale claims that the National Front (NF) – which supports the compulsory repatriation of all non-white immigrants – was just ‘a bit of a social club’ when he ran the local group in 1978. But newspaper reports from the time, unearthed by The Mail on Sunday, paint a very different picture of the organisation. One article, from the West London Observer, included a picture of Mr Heale alongside reports that the police were planning to ban a National Front march in April 1978 because the officers thought there was ‘bound to be violence’ when the protesters were confronted by anti-Nazi demonstrators. Another article from the same publication gives a graphic account of how a 17-year-old boy was knifed to death at a party in Hammersmith, where Mr Heale was head of the local National Front branch. The victim, a member of the NF, was killed by friends of a fellow member. A cover of the group’s magazine Spearhead from March 1979 indicates the type of literature which it distributed at the time. It shows a black man kissing a white woman, next to a headline which says: ‘Start Repatriation Now!’" http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3065674/Pictured-National-days-man-Ukip-s-Nigel-Farage-ran-group-far-right-racists.html

Wow - a blog written by the partner of a candidate, that has been dead for 5 years, is being resurrected to try and damage the party with the smallest number of MP's. Is this where we are at?

This cheeky scamp used to be an organiser for the National Front, but it was only a drink driving conviction that made UKIP suspend him.. "A UKIP MEP and general election candidate has been suspended "following allegations of a serious financial nature", the party says. Janice Atkinson, MEP for the South East, was due to fight the Folkestone and Hythe seat on 7 May. She was suspended following a Sun newspaper investigation into potential impropriety by a member of her staff, relating to an expenses claim. Ms Atkinson has not responded to BBC requests for comment. Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, party leader Nigel Farage told the BBC a disciplinary hearing would be held "early next week". He said: "It looks very bad - it couldn't look worse and I'm astonished by it."" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-31976343

Jack Sen, who is standing in West Lancashire, sent the tweet to Liverpool Wavertree candidate Luciana Berger. The post reads: "Protect child benefits? Peter Endean, who is standing for Nigel Farage's party in local council elections in Plymouth and is Ukip's communications manager for the town, retweeted an image of some of the rescued migrants with a caption that said: "Labour's new floating voters. In the interests of political fairness I have started this thread as it seems to be the only one @simmo forgot to start. I know he is a very busy man so I'm doing him a lickle favour as he has been so kind to bring all of the dodgy stuff the main political parties are getting up to. Keep up the good work comrade Simmo! "A man who was slapped in the face by a Ukip councillor has been bombarded with homophobic abuse on Twitter. David Braniff-Herbert, 30, was attending a Hope Not Hate meeting when he was involved in an altercation with Great Yarmouth Ukip councillor Tom Andrews. Mr Braniff-Herbert, who works for Unison, claims he was assaulted when he asked Mr Andrews to leave the meeting. Norfolk Police arrested the 72-year-old and he has accepted a caution for a minor assault." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/ukip/11547959/Ukip-councillor-cautioned-for-slapping-man-as-Twitter-trolls-target-victim.html
