  1. People don't migrate on 457's they have temporary work permits. You hear a lot of stories of them on these forums of people selling up everything and coming to OZ to emigrate only to be made redundant and go home without a penny.
  2. I have heard of a scam originating in a country next to the UK that allows people to set up an abn and sponsor themselves! There are migration agents who do this for them, so is this right too? And if this happens with people from that country then i can only imagine how many dishwashers are sponsored as chefs from Asian countries.
  3. A lot from Ireland and Asia. I have met a lot in my industry who came here on holiday visas and got sponsored but earn less than average. Professional occupations such as engineers etc are different but a 23 year old tradesman? What is the benefit of that to young Australians or people who migrate who are experienced?
  4. It is the same everywhere nobody is interested in going around to quote a small job which is worth peanuts at the end of the day by the time they go and visit then do a quote. It is the same in most other countries too.
  5. The thing a lot of people don't seem to understand is that if wages don't increase at the same rate as house prices then we have a huge problem? What do we do when an average house becomes 20x avg salary? 50 year mortgages? All we in the western countries have been doing for the last few years is giving a larger slice of our income to the banks. It does not really benefit anyone apart from developers who get in and out at the right time and the banks and governments. Those who gloat about how much their house has increased in value are kidding themselves because unless they downsize or live in a tent they wont ever see the money. If we paid less for property there would be more money to spend on other things thus keeping more people in jobs to produce what we buy or more money to save in our accounts. This is all going to explode eventually and will never be sustainable. Japan is a good example there property market went sky high 20 odd years ago and has never really recovered again.
  6. I am sure someone will come along and have a go at me for saying this but it is probably the worst of Perth's sub city's. High crime rates and low property prices. A high population of indigenous people, no i am not racist before anyone comments but very few of them work etc. A lot of anti social behavior by kids as well.
  7. UK qualifications here mean nothing, You will need to apply for an ARTC if you are going on a holiday visa or an OSTR with Vetassess if you are applying to be a permanent resident, but you may fall short of experience 7 years in total I believe. Once you have either of those you can apply for a provisional license and begin your 1 year gap training. NOBODY will employ you without a license of some sort and it can be very hard to get a job to complete the gap training. The gap training varies from state to state but I would say it cost me close to $10K when i count lost earnings to attend college.
  8. Plenty more cash to spend i am afraid Vetassess is only a fraction . You will most likely need to do the English test as well.
  9. Had to laugh at that article as 90% of Perth is exactly the same. Houses are not designed here they are copied and pasted. They almost all have the same basic bland design and you cant really tell much difference beetween a lot of the suburbs. Freo does need a facelift but at least it looks a bit differant
  10. Yes i agree with your point there but those type of skills are dieing out and only a very small percentage of the people/companies in those trades are capable of that kind of work. I done a lot of heritage work in Scotland on some of our most famous buildings so I am very familiar with that kind of work.
  11. Less art and crafty yes but more technical, it is like comparing apples with oranges to be honest. But to be a good spark and to go further in your career you really need to have good maths and physics understanding where as a plasterer or painter could be trained even if they cant read or write.
  12. I am good thanks. That is ridiculous how long you have had to wait for a capstone date, at least your almost there. As for the restricted license mines almost ran out and I was one of the first to complete the gap training, there must be loads of people having to extend theirs so that's a joke too. CET would be a far better option for anybody coming over now as Polytechnic West is a dump and very disorganized.
  13. Perth is above 20s for 8 months of the year but trust me when i tell you it does not feel as hot at 25 degrees here as it did in the UK. We have had constant rain for the last 3 months and in winter your house is so cold as they have no heating or insulation. I have never felt so cold in my life. In the UK my house was always warm no matter the temp outside.
  14. Good luck with reading a book on how to do large electrical installations. For wiring a room in a house that could be done yes but the work would be poor. For a larger installation your connections would be a mess and dangerous for a start and the likelyhood of anything working would be 0.001%. I am still learning new skills in my field after 20 years due to constant changing technology. You still do the karate kid movements day in day out, so to say i have less skill is laughable. Installing electrical systems neatly is a skill and far more varied than plastering. One trick pony springs to mind.
  15. Yes all we do is cut wires and tighten screws all day lol. Anyone can fit a socket or light fitting just as i can quite easily hang a door but can you install and correctly wire an industrial switch room with all the controls?
  16. Or another way of looking at it is why does all this debt end up with the top 1% in the world getting richer while the rest get poorer?
  17. It sounds to me like you are getting mixed up with a contractors license? Vetassess gives a carpenter a cert 3 which means that they can present this to the licensing board pay a fee and receive their carpenters license. For the more skilled trades we have to do gap training in Australia ONLY then when complete we send it to vetassess who provide us a cert 3 which we then take to the licensing board. You wont be able to apply for a contractors license which allows you to do work above a certain value without residing in Australia and holding the relevant states license.
  18. Correct me if i am wrong here but don't you get a cert 3 in carpentry issued by Vetassess which you do as part of your visa application anyway? Only sparks and plumbers have to do additional training in Australia, cant be done in the UK if anyone tells you it can they are stealing your money for nothing
  19. I wonder if it was the DIAC who conducted that survey. And yes i know it has nice beaches and parks before anyone reminds me. But not an awful lot more.
  20. The whole construction industry here is a disgrace. Industrial sparky work here is like domestic in the UK lol. TPS and plastic conduit LMAO. Houses that are like sheds. Yet we sparks have to go do a 1 year course to learn about how all cables in a 16A socket circuit go back to a joint box in a house attic as this is the best way to do it. The trade test practical is a bit of wood with a couple of sockets that you can throw the cables behind no clips etc and connect a piece of **** db. No wonder the standard is useless .In the UK we have to do metal conduit , trunking , Pyro and it has to look neat.
  21. No probs! You are one of the lucky buggers that got to do the 2 week nobody fails cheap as chips course at CET. I am just bitter because I should have had the same but the Bastards held off sending my electrical permit till after the changes so they could fleece me for more money and help keep a TAFE in one of Perths worst areas open.
  22. I have no idea how often it is run but i would guess you would have to book a few months in advance best thing to do is call or email them and ask. CET Balcatta can't do the gap training unless that has changed recently it is only Polytechnic West that can do the gap training .
