I run an IT Services company in the North of Australia. We have sponsored several IT Engineers and Technicians with great success over the last 10 years. Most people make the mistake of thinking they have to go to Sydney or Melbourne to get IT work, the opposite is true, as unless you have very specialist skills (and they are in demand at the time) you will find it very difficult to get IT work there as there are many many other people also seeking those same jobs, and who probably don't need sponsorship which is an expensive, time consuming and difficult process. Yes coneeded, for Finance and Stock Market Trading Technology, Sydney, a bit like London is the Financial Capital, your correct if thats your IT Specialisation thats where you need to be. However thats only a small portion of the overall IT Industry and for entry level (that won't apply for skilled migrants anyway), mid level and higher levels, staff are needed all over Australia for that, they are too in Melb/Sydney/Perth/Bris, BUT these capital cities currently don't have a shortage of skilled IT staff and people unless they have something VERY special to offer, will find it harder to get work in those cities.

I'm not sure why people here seem to think that Melbourne, Sydney are the places to get IT work, these are the HARDEST Markets to find work in, yes there are more jobs adverstised, BUT there are also a LOT more applicants and a lot more local candidates that your are up against. The regional area's are were most opportunities are, for example I've got a couple of job vacancies for IT Technicans and a Sales & Marketing Role that I would be interested in receiving applications from and I do sponsor several staff at the moment (you MUST have excellent English skills though). Also don't forget that a lot of jobs don't get advertised, and also that MOST Jobs do NOT go through Agencies, so whilst yes, by all means list with an agency, you will get best results from approaching employers and also responding to jobs advertised directly.

I'm not sure BUT I would caution you as they openly say "Our head office is in the USA, and we have offices in Australia" and their website does not really give you confidence. Australian Immigration Law and procedures are complex and if I was looking for advice I would be looking for an Agency thats main focus is in Australia. There are LOTS of them out there, so I'm not sure why you would look at a Non-Australian one? I would also suggest doing research of them on LinkedIn, you want to know who the Directors and REAL people behind the organisation are. PLUS it is also a requirement that to give Migration advice they are Registered, see the Department of Immigration Website (which has a LOT of good info on it). Good luck, but remember the old addage, "if it smells like a duck, sounds like a duck and Looks like a duck, it probably is a duck", I'm not saying thats the case with the company you are talking about but it sounds like you allready know the answer.

Yes Melbourne, Sydney Brisbane are the biggest cities and have the most IT workers. BUT they also have the most unemployed IT workers and the greatest competition for jobs. Depending on your IT Skillset, you may have far greater opportunities work wise in the Regional Areas or smaller cities, your lifestyle may also be better (that depends what you like though of course).

Paul, Palmerston, Whats wrong with Palmerston? Its a new City and a good standard of accomodation, clean, modern & friendly people (as most Territorian's are) If your very much a inner city dweller, then yes its probably the opposite of London/Sydney/New York/Delhi etc, as the population is small and things are spread out. Yes its about an hour and half's drive to Litchfield, but thats great for Camping, or longer day trip to see the National Park or parts of it as most people visit there several times if they live here, thats what I call close:) to get to a world class wilderness area. One other downside though is that generally public transport is not very good, its improving, but you really want a car to get around. Our crime rate is quite low, sure the increasing nightlife has also increased that as it does in other cities, but you can allways live away from that. Paul, if you did not even make it "down the track" then you really missed out, still I guess the cold beer would have been good. Also Huss81, thats "just about no UNemployment" if you can do a days work, for some it seems even half a days work, then you will get a job, as demand for workers outstrips supply because the place is booming. Like I said that does make accomodation more expensive and competitive. There are other great places in Australia, but the Territory has a lot going for it and even more opportunity for work.

For those on WHV or seeking sponsorship, Darwin is absolutely the best place in Australia and gives you the greatest opportunity. Its a small city but close to Kakadu & Litchfield, very friendly, great nightlife, lots of travelers, lots of people from different cultures. Lots of work available skilled or unskilled, lots to see and do and great experiences to be enjoyed. You really can't come to Australia without visiting the Northern Territory. Because its the Capital city of the North, for its size it has more facilities, more culture and more activities than any other city of its size in Australia. Only down sides are, its hot humid weather (Nov-March), cost of accomodation is high (due to demand and just about no unemployment).

It comes down to 3 very simple things: - Unless you are at the top of pack in terms of skill, experience & qualifications, you WON'T be competitive in Melb/Sydney/Bris/Canberra/Perth. There are jobs are in the regional areas, the market is saturated in the big cities (except there is a need for more taxi drivers). - Good English, Good Communication skills are ESSENTIAL for work in Australia, unfortunately many people from Non English Speaking backgrounds (and even quite a few with English speaking backgrounds) don't have this, without this fundamental skill, it will make getting a skilled job in IT very difficult. - IT skills needed in Australia are broader (ie less specialised and you need to be able to do more than one small part of IT) than they seem to be in some other parts of the world, you need to be flexibile and skilled in a range of IT. I still have open positions and am recruiting, BUT you MUST have good communication & customer facing skills, aswell as IT skills. Yes Australia currently has a lot more oportunities for IT skills than the UK & Ireland. I am looking to sponsor & employ on 457 visa's some highly skilled Microsoft Cerftified Field engineers, mainly in SME Support (a lot more varied and skilled work in many respects than Enterprise level). If your interested in working in Northern Australia and have SME IT Field Support experience (inc Servers) and excellent customer service skills (including extremely good english) then feel free to get in touch. Also the market for jobs is highly competitive. What you need is excellent IT Skills and MOST importantly great English & communication skills.
