We are nearly ready to send off our skills assessment to VETASSES. Can I just ask - do they just approve you the qualification or do they state how many years worth it is- ie does it affect the points for visa in years? I have provided evidence for 5 years as it stated although I have over 10 years I have calculated that with my experience I have 65 points ( the extra 5 points coming from my work in Australia) Age - 25 points (aged 34) Ielts - 10 points hopefully if I get 7s Over seas work - 15 points (At least eight and up to 10 years (of past 10 years) ) Australian Work Experience - 5 points (At least one but less than three years (of past 10 years) ) UK education - 10 points (qualification or award of recognised standard) Thanks in Advance

The job sounds too good to be true so just thought id check before handing over all our details. I have no reason to suspect they are not legit! Just being over cautious probably :-)

Thanks Alan, yes I've read those and we are thinking more diesel mechanic but still not 100% - a bit of a grey area!

That's very worrying.. My partners also been told that a 457 will more likely be granted for a mining position than for a construction one. Its making me think a perm visa would be best for us... As we have 3 children so don't want my partners work jeopardised once we are out there.

That's very odd that we've been told that... It's was a major (known) company. We've noticed that diesel fitter is no longer on the sol ... Does anyone know if any diesel fitters have gone under the occupation of 'fitter (general)' or 'diesel motor mechanic'. Reading the descriptions on immi ... He could be classed as either. We are also considering a perm visa if not successful in obtaining 457 sponsorship. So would need to get assessed under one of those headings presume, by TRA. Unfortunately we have just found out the new rule about assessments only being valid for 3 years! We have a successful one from 2009... And I still remember all the hard work

Thanks for your replies. So that means if we have worked out my partner has about 70 points we should be ok without the extra 5 points of sponsorship?

Hi could someone please clarify what is the key difference between the two visas. Ie why would you choose to go for the state sponsored one ... do you get points towards your application if they say yes to an expression of interest or something? Sorry this may be really obvious but we cant work it out. The costs are the same for both. Thanks in advance

Hello everyone, We are starting on our journey again to hopefully live in Australia. We previously lived in Queensland on my partners 457 visa (diesel fitter) but returned to UK 18 months ago due to ill health. We have been considering a move back for sometime now and feel it would be better for us and our children. I wish wed never left but hey ho you don't find that out until you do it! We can definitely see the benefits of being over there now. We were hoping to go on a 457 but have been told that the government aren't issuing them at the moment. (I have written a post about this is migration issues) Please say hello if you are also starting off on your journey to Australia :-)

Hi we (my partner and our family) have previously been living in QLD on a 457 visa but returned 18 months ago due to ill health. We are wanting to return and live regionally. My partners job role will come under the diesel fitter/mechanic title and he has applied for a job but has been told that they cannot offer a 457 at this time - and that its not a company decision, but its the government. Has anyone else been told this? Are they not issuing ANY 457s or are they just taking longer/ only granting for certain jobs? Thanks in advance
