  1. Hmmm, a water birth was my intention too (apparently it decreases the likelihood of tearing), and I was set against pain relief ... but I ended up with induced contractions, gas / air made me projectile vomit, and after a day of hidious pain with only 1cm to show for it I was demanding an epidural. Gotta say it was amazing, I quickly fell asleep and they woke me after 2 hrs as I was 10cm she just pushed herself out within a few easy minutes after that. Good luck!
  2. Wow! He must be quite a guy, good on him! I think the majority of people find it harder as they grow older, since responsibilities / commitments seem to tie people down more. But maybe by 80 one comes full circle and just thinks 'what the hell!?'
  3. I think the Ryde, Eastwood and Lanecove area is a pretty staid, family friendly, safe sort of place. Eastwood has a thriving Chinese population. I should think $700 p.w is a reasonable rental budget for a 2-3 bedroom place, nothing flashy though. I can't comment on schools and pre schools, sorry.
  4. Also, they tend to be known as 'resumes' over here rather than curricula vitae.
  5. I think an Aussie c.v is typically more detailed than a British one. In the UK I was advised to keep my c.v to 2 pages, but here that's considered quite short. Also, my understanding is that Aussies don't tend to have a 'mission statement' kind of thing at the top.
  6. Do you mean the curry mile in Rusholm? God, I miss Spicy Hut! I'd be going at least twice a week if I was in your shoes!
  7. All the day care centres I'm on the waiting list for (8, all Inner West), provide hot meals. I haven't come across any which didn't. Everyone I know, inc Australians, gets their books from The Book Depository in the UK since it seems to be the cheapest with free posting to Aus. However they only sell books.
  8. I'm not a physio, but Global Health Source are very helpful. http://globalhealth.com.au
  9. I may be completely wrong about this, it's just an idea.... Is your partner receiving help from a government funded service for her mental health issues? If so, then she'll have a case manager (probs a social worker or mental health practitioner), and if your partner is deemed unable to look after the baby by herself, then the case manager may be able to write a letter in support of you being granted a visa to stay in the country in order to help her look after the baby. I don't know what type of visa this would be, some kind of carer's visa?
  10. Gather written references from previous landlords if applicable.
  11. Eat copious amounts of decent curry at your favourite Indian. Also bacon if you're a carnivore, and Sunday roasts at your favourite gastro pubs. Go and see some old things like castles. If you aren't bringing all your CDs over, rip them onto an external hard drive. Steal, I mean save, everything you might need from your work's shared drive. Make sure you've scanned old family photos onto your hard drive too. Cuddle some hamsters, hedgehogs, badgers and robins.
  12. Sorry, don't know anything about cricket or golf.
  13. Well I don't know about porn (!), but for a largish town I don't think there's too much to worry about by way of crime (family in the local police force). Drink drivers are probs mostly yummy Mummies in Chelsea tractors driven to despair by their comfortable, pointless existence.
  14. Visit places of interest in the UK you've never got round to visiting, and if you have any spare cash, take a short break in Europe.
  15. Seems to be populated mainly by retired people. Maybe they weren't quite retired 10 yrs ago?! From the Dales to Cairns, eh - Crikey, that's quite a change of scenery.
  16. The Stray's still a nice area, remember the cherry blossom and the Christmas lights? Skipton's interesting.
  17. I used to venture into Starbeck once a year (bloody inconvenient), to go to the opticians, since the one there was always exceptionally good. Nixon's.
  18. I grew up in a house on a cul de sac off Leeds Rd near The Stray ... My Dad still lives there. The 36 bus goes that way into Leeds so you'd be near a bus stop. That area is Central Harrogate and High Harrogate. Think the edge of The Stray marks the boarder.
  19. Agreed! Jenny fields isn't great either (not as bad as Starbeck).
  20. The 36 is quite comfortable for a bus, see here: http://www.harrogatebus.co.uk/36.htm
  21. There's plenty of nice 'normal' type people in Harrogate too ... It even has a rough area!
  22. I'm from Harrogate. I used to find the 36 bus to be very good, probs more reliable than the train, and a 12 month pass was always cheaper. The train gets packed and so sometimes doesn't stop to pick up more passengers from stations like Pannal - annoying if you're stood on the platform waiting for it! Both the train station and bus stops are close to Leeds CBD.
  23. Sorry I don't know the area very well, I've only been there once. I thought it was a bit scruffy, and the beach (which has no surf) was spoilt by being across from an industrial oil refinery - bit of an eye sore. Good views of planes ... If you're a plane spotter! I would imagine that it's relatively affordable though. Maybe someone else can give you a better response.
  24. I was there recently (Palace cinema). What's happening with the Italian Forum? It's always empty / dead. Seems a shame. Maybe the rent's just too high for small businesses?
