    Big spider

Well I still don’t know what it was, but we had a happy ending. I covered it up with a plastic bowl (using gardening gloves lol) then waited for hubby to come home. He scooped it up and released it outside in the shrubbery. He said a big boy like that would eat all the bugs. I have it on video but can’t upload it for some reason. I hope I don’t meet him again when I’m gardening.

Can anyone tell me what this is please, it’s guarding the shed door ewwwee
  7. If you drive up the night before, you can get a cheap air b n b for the night in Hervey Bay and then catch the early ferry in the morning at river heads. We stayed on Fraser last Christmas for 3 nights at the Kingfisher resort and had a great time. We never saw any dingos but there were plenty of warning signs. Take warm clothing with you, it can get pretty nippy at night time and Fraser has its own micro climate, they say it's always raining somewhere on Fraser. First pic is Kingfisher resort and then the ferry unloading on Fraser
  8. Have a look at Emu Plains, Glenmore Park, Leonay, Penrith. From any of these towns, take a short drive to the train station, where you can park all day for free. There is a direct train straight into Sydney CBD. Rents are much more manageable living out west. We lived in Glenmore Park for six months and paid less than $600 pw for 4 bed house in a lovely area.

    House building

Thanks so much Eera, I know somebody who does have access to site classification, I will find out which one before we make any offers on the house. I am hoping it will be fine as we love the house. regards Metoo

    House building

Please can I ask any builders on here if you have any opinion on WAFFLE SLABS Would you buy a house that was built on a waffle slab? We have found a beautiful house which is about 12 years old and it is on one of these slabs. I have read some horror stories about them but was wondering if this is the norm. The house in question does not seem to have any issues as yet but obviously we would be concerned about the future. We would have a builders report done before signing anything but we are going back for a second viewing this week and I don’t want to get too excited if this would be a big NO NO for someone in the know. thanks all Metoo
  11. Hi all, has anybody been following the price of flights back to the UK lately? We are unexpectedly having to go back asap for a couple of weeks. Any info on good deals would be appreciated. Many thanks Metoo
  12. This very same thing happened to friends of ours. Their beautiful real wood floors were all warped and it affected the bottom of the kitchen cupboards. Their flood was caused by the flexi hose on the dish washer which had become frayed. A quick trip to the good guys found a replacement hose with a special cut off feature which seals the hose in case of a leak. It takes 10 mins to fit, could have saved them loads of worry and expense. (I think it cost about $30 and had a 5 yrs warranty) We had one fitted on our washing machine as out laundry does not have a drain in the floor. i know of one other person who had a flood while she was away on holiday. The Flexi hose on the bathroom sink failed and the mess was found by my nephew who was feeding and walking their dog. He fixed the hose for them and mopped up.
  13. Thank you so much guys. The house has a massive water tank 22,000 L which I presume is for drinking and the bore water sounds like is best used for irrigation. There is also a smaller water tank 5000L I think which feeds a detached granny bungalow. We love the house and the only issue was the water. I can live with a combination of filter system and bottled water. i think the bore is about 50ft deep,
  14. Has anybody on here purchased a property which has it water supply from bore and rain tanks. Do you feel comfortable drinking bore water, and is it a hassle getting permits etc? Thanks in advance Metoo
  15. It is two years today that we stepped off the plane in Sydney, so where are we now? Well, after spending the first six months in Sydney's West, where we rented a house , we very soon decided that renting was not for us. Mr Metoo was working in the CBD and his 2 hr commute in rush hr traffic was not ideal. So, we quickly learned that the type of house we wanted was not going to be affordable in Sydney so we looked further afield and decided to move to North Queensland. We were able to buy a house near the beach and very soon settled down in our new home. It took a while for us to find jobs but we got there in the end. Ironically, Mr Metoo is now travelling almost two hours to work each day, but, the difference is he is now driving along empty roads bordered by cane fields and farms. He often stops off at the farm shop on the way home and brings fresh fruit and veg. and macadamia nuts. On my day off I sometimes go with him and I take the car along the coast road and spend the day on the beach or hanging around the cafes until he finishes, I also check out realestate as we are considering moving again closer to work. Then we have a nice drive home. We have acquired an extra pet, a little elderly cat from the rehoming centre. She was supposed to be company for our other elderly cat who we brought with us from the UK. Unfortunately, they don't like each other lol. So, anyway tonight we will be breaking open the champagne and drinking to the past two incredible years. We will toast the friends we left behind and the new ones we have made here in Australia. Where will we be in two more years?? Hopefully still here in Queensland. Metoo xx
  16. Congratulations Adele244, it sounds like you have everything in order. i hope everything continues to go well for your family. while you wait for your container to arrive, try visiting second hand shops for stuff to tide you over. When we first arrived we bought a nearly new fridge and a 50" telly for not a lot of $$. You can even get second hand games consoles to keep the kids entertained while they wait for their toys to arrive. The fridge is now our beer fridge and the telly is still being used. A trip to Costco was worth it, we had 2 fold up tables and some plastic chairs, replacement chargers for our iPads and iPhones and we bought several pairs of shorts and T shirts (it's all you seem to wear in Queensland) and hubby bought a small selection of tools so we could make small repairs and a retractable hose pipe which I can honestly say gets used every day. When all your own stuff arrives it's like Christmas. Good luck, glad you are loving it X
  17. I passed my first aid certificate (-:
  18. We have installed some bat boxes in our garden. They are to attract micro bats which are the tiny littles critters not the big lolloping ones. Our 'Bat Man' has told us that they will eat théir own body weight in insects daily, including cockroaches, mozzies, midgies, and even baby mice and lizards. We are in North Queensland so get more than our fair share of creepy crawlies. If you want bat boxes in Queensland you need to get a permit, ours came free form our local Bat Monitor. Not sure if it will work yet though as the boxes need to be in place for several months before the bats take up residence. We are looking forward to seeing little beady eyes shining out of our bat boxes next year.
  19. We just kept iPads, phones and cameras in hand luggage. Everything else in checked baggage. Never had anything stolen and travelled a lot over the years. We also sent 2 suitcases unaccompanied, they took about a month to arrive and we seriously thought we would never see them again but they arrived eventually and it was all good.
  20. We are on the same speed or worse than Kev here in North Queensland. No NBN here and we have been told that we may never get it. Worst service ever and costs a fortune. Some of our neighbours who have recently moved here have no connection as there are no available portals. They put you on a waiting list for up to a year!!!! You get better connection in South Korea
  21. Here in Queensland it has to be your first home, ever, including all other countries. We didn't qualify as we owned previously in uk, though we did get a reduction on the stamp duty.

Very sorry to hear this. Condolences to you and your family, Scott will be missed. RIP
  23. We brought one cat with us and adopted a second cat once we arrived. Both of our cats are old. One is 12yrs and the other 9 yrs. we prefer older cats as they tend to stay close to home, our 12 yr old never leaves our garden. Both cats are kept in a night. We have to pay an annual fee for registration with the council and if they wonder then they can be picked up by the warden. Did we do the right thing bringing our 12 yr old from the UK? In his case I think yes. Nobody would want to adopt an old cat like him so it was bring him or have him put down :-(. Obviously we wouldn't do that. So here he is. I don't believe he is as happy here as he was in the UK. He is afraid of the big birds that visit the garden and the heat zaps his energy but we are having au unusually long hot summer. our adopted other cat was a resort cat who was left behind when her owners moved. We took her because we were told her chances of a new home were very slim due to her age. I think we did the right thing with her. She is happy and again too old to be bothered chasing wild life. If if your cat will tollerate being kept in or confined to the garden then no problem, but, if he/she is an avid hunter then maybe a bit more tricky. The personality of your pets will play a part in the decision making process. Good luck. By the way, if you do decide to bring them, Golden Arrow were great with ours, but start saving, it's not cheap.
  24. Ok ok I scrolled through your previous posts and found this............. Your advice to the OP was very naive, but I will leave it there. Yes, definitely naive, You are naive. Oh rubbish. .................I see you are a teacher, this explains a lot
