  1. Just dont tell them. I never told my boss until I gave my usual months notice and resigned. They could make your life hell in the meantime and i have heard of instances of that happening, come up with some excuse to make you redundant before you go (in which case a redundancy package would come in helpful). Would you tell them you are looking for another job? Probably not.
  2. Having grown up there, I don't miss the grockel boxes or Dartmoor, it's a bloody wasteland and it's good to see no one has mentioned the best beaches so I'll keep quiet
  3. Your wife won't be able to practice without re qualifying and being admitted to practice and Aussie law firms don't use paralegals in the same way as English ones
  4. Mine is certainly not as bad in Qld but it has its moments. It was pretty bad in Melbourne but that's because of the plane trees which are known to be the worst for hay fever and the pollen is toxic.
  5. Not necessarily. It would have to go to the court of appeal to be overruled. Agreements and contracts , including divorce settlements made under Sharia law and other legal systems are legally enforceable in England and Wales. This is what happens when the judiciary gets out of touch and parliament does nothing to rectify the situation which is why the UK is in such a mess. Australia has taken the view that they are not and that the law of the land is paramount.
  6. Heres a life hack for NT - a walk in freezer or bottle shop freezer is a great place to hang out
  7. Registering your relationship waives the 12 month requirement to live together. It's clearly set out in the PAM3 guidelines
  8. The high Aussie dollar has, historically been unusual. It will continue to fall, prices of imports will go up, petrol is just as expensive as when it was over $100 a barrel, despite it falling to about $60 now.
  9. The Bruce Highway is not like a British motorway either. From Caboolture it is only 2 lane with lots of speed cameras and limits are strictly enforced and traffic is simply horrendous. It's not 110 all the way and parts of it are 90 or 100. You don't want to sit in traffic on a hot day, even with aircon, or when there are storms. It is regularly closed or impassable during storms and there is no way off it. It's taken me 1.5 hours from narangba to Nudgee. There are tolls on the tunnels and parking in the CBD is astronomical. There is a train from Nambour but trains are expensive. It takes an hour to Caboolture. if you finish work around 5pm you won't get much beach time by the time you get home which defeats the object of living there.
  10. I am very confused. You say your daughter insists on Oxbridge and you have suggested a digital media course at Vic Uni in NZ. If she. Wants to study digital or visual arts/animation then Oxford and Cambridge are certainly not renowned for being the best in the UK and I don't Know if they even do such courses. My partner works in digital media and animation and no one in the industry is interested in the uni, it's what you can do.
  11. Another is correcting the pronunciation of English place names and telling me that I am wrong, despite growing up and living there before coming to Australia! I know how to say Launceston, Devonport, Ascot and Exmouth properly!...and Maroon!
  12. It was pretty easy, just buy the necessities and keep an eye on the pennies and saved like crazy but have regular treats to make life more fun. Its rare that we pay full price for anything and always hunt on the internet for a bargain or wait for the sales. We saved over $100k for a house deposit in 5 years and once we have finished the gardens we can start doubling the mortgage payments. I was once offered a good tip. Always buy on the last day of the sale. If they havent made their target, they are desperate for a sale and if they have achieved target, they dont care about the price, so they will be happy to reduce it. Its always worked for me. Aim for at least a third off and settle on 25%. Otherwise walk away.
  13. I dont know what you are doing with your money but when there as only me working on about $62k for nearly a year we paid all of the bills, saved for a deposit, bought a new car with cash, had regular weekends away and lived in Williamstown. We had to be careful with money but we didn't scrimp.

    Yarraville

YarraVille used to be rough many years ago but it's gone upmarket with young couples, yuppies and hipsters. I lived in Williamstown but it's good if you can't afford Willy.
  15. I was disappointed with the the English chippy in North Lakes. The service as friendly, chip portions were huge but soggy and the pasty had carrot in it. I was so excited at seeing a scotch egg after not having one for 7 years but it was cold. I just make my own pasties and scotch eggs now and go to my local chippy
  16. Well do tell us what value/benefit/enjoyment do you get from having a bottle of very expensive wine, keeping it for years and not drinking it. Some people have very expensive cars and like to drive around in it. They may be showing off but at least they are using it. My mum collected Swarovski. i hated it but she liked to look at it. There are a lot of wine snobs around and some poster may have made an assumption about yourself. Some people buy wine as an investment or saving a nice bottle for a special occasion which I can understand, but to keep it for years and do nothing seems very odd. Wine is a perishable good after all. One of my work colleagues has just come back from a wine tour, spending hundreds of dollars on very expensive wine but at least she drinks it.
  17. I never experienced any homophobia apart from that from the government in making me pay an extortionate amount for my visa, and not allowing civil partnerships or same sex marriage. Homophobia is worse the further you get out from the CBD? What rubbish! I've found Aussies more tolerate than poms.
  18. Don't forget paying 32% tax on all of your income with no tax free element...unlike everyone else in Australia.
  19. Brighton or bristol. I've lived in both but I think Bristol is better
  20. It's funny how most of the previous posters are sticking up on things that are cheap in Australia. Thongs? This IS Australia remember! Kids clothes? Go to Target or k mart or Big W for cheap stuff. I recommend for men a good suit jacket and a couple of pairs of trousers from M&S. Suit prices are a rip off here.
  21. Just make scans of both passports and citizen cert and keep copies in her email account in case she does lose them
  22. if you are on a visa with profession/job restrictions, Immigration will catch up with you sooner or later and your visa will be cancelled. Employers have to notify DIBP they are employing you and what you are doing. if it is different to whats on your visa you will be caught.
  23. My boss put in an offer for a house 40k under the asking price which was accepted 2 weeks ago but had the mortgage refused as the bank reckons it's worth even less.
  24. Dairy Milk is simply a brand name. Dairy is milk, cheese, cream, butter, yoghurt etc, not chocolate. FYI, wine gums do not contain wine
  25. Scan and keep them before you post so you have copies...or you can email them
