  1. Met up with brother in law and sis in law today, gobsmacked to hear they been looking at uk places as considering moving back after 15 years he is an aussie and she is english, 3 kids.I thought they had it all but cost of living and thoughts that their children are not growing up with family and Perth rather bland being given as reasons they are considering it.
  2. manageable heat, you can keep the 40degrees here in summer far too hot to do anything outside
  3. Dont Forget the headline post the day before 'Finally going home'
  4. I think you have to let them live their own dream rather than trying to get them to live yours. A uni degree is still very useful in this world esp from the UK. In this day and age with skype etc contact is seconds away. I too face the prospect of 1 son here 1 son in the UK, best we can hope for is that they are both happy in their choices
  5. One size doesnt fit all here in Oz, and nowhere does it say the move has to be permanent regardless of costs. Take note of the positives and negatives but never base your decisions on others experiences, You have a good life in the Uk, it could be better here, it may not, but it will be different and the fact you have even considered the move means you have that itch we all know about. Nervous excitement and an adventure. The kids will adapt . Enjoy it, give it a shot. Its not for life unless you want it to be.

globally this includes oz, dont be naive to think the boom lasts forever, learn from europe but you cannot change

when in a trough the only way is up, when on a crest the only way is down, boom and bust, its how the western world live

I used to be registered for sub contract work doing gas with diff agencies, for some reason I am now getting several e-mails from them asking if I available for work in the south. Lots of work and good money there. shame my licence and gas safe reg expired, could have had a working hol :-) 0 I also think peeps still in the uk waiting to get here always look for the negatives in the uk either consciously or subconsciously, probably helps with their reasons for leaving. I remember back doing the same

All take time, took me 2 years to get my visa in 2003, I keep my gas licence updated here in Perth so I am able to do the odd job, I work full time and study too. I can happily liv in either country to be honest. If i didnt have this adventure streak I would have been mortgage free at 40. but then life is short, oz was there so I went for it

I love Perth, been here few years, love both the uk and oz, renting house at the moment, I am gas eng plumber by trade but gained A levels in psychology uk and study here too. both countries been good to me, I can love and hate both places sometimes lol. problem at the moment is if i sell house i still need large mortgage here to buy, and job situ in perth not that secure. i jst plod along really, read the news here and UK always keep up with the soap opera called pompey. how about you

yes i put it on the market 3 years ago but they wanted too much reduction on asking price, all things happen for a eason i guess as its now back up to a decent appraisal depending of course on what people are willing to pay for it. I grew up in Fratton

Think us peeps down south have had an impression of the north instilled on us poss vice versa, I always pictured the north in black and white etc, but having travelled through its a beautiful country, though I havnt lived there. I have lots of friends here form scotland toonland yorkshire midlands etc and we all get on great, good banter and humour, one thing they always refer to me as a southern softie lol great people,

Yes, my house is opposite baffins pond
  15. Evenings are lighter now and temps are warmer but more comfortable, keep posting on here say every friday keep us updated. The time will fly by and before you know it you will have a posting headed ' I cant believe we are heading home this week'.
  16. A job is a job and can only enhance your cv if you have some aussie employment no matter what the job. I said it before, I arrived 2003 and the woman in the bank when I picked up my cards etc said 'dont be too picky when going for that job at first'. Ihad a clutch of tradie certs when I arrived which meant nothing,my son took his first job detailing cars at the airport ( cleaning)
  17. I know a guy here a manager in his job who would dearly love to go home but cannot leave his kids and grandkids. such a shame and waste of a life, he looks 20yrs older than he is, a life of purgatory for him it must be.. Sapphire as others have said, get some time to visit places and tick them off as you will not be coming back, take the photos, even the cdb at night and when in a few short months you are settled back home you can look at the pics in a different light and smile at your adventure, kids will adapt to any environment
  18. my pals and family in the UK very large family are all happy enough, all working bar 2 who gave up, all the news I caught on tv and papers all are positive so ignore those who constantly put the uk down. couple of friends and family have been here and stayed a while both families independently said yes, nice but very bland and would not visit again but glad they can say they visited oz, they make the best of everything in the uk and live life in the now rather than looking to what they might have. but yes all upbeat in the UK, they liked the heat and hope for a snowy white xmas
  19. I see the ads on TV jobs for Australian etc etc, often wondered if this legal, must be but I wonder if this would be accepted in the usa or uk. rather racist I thought. before anyone says they should do this in the uk, remember when you arrive in oz, you are the immigrant looking for jobs in anothers country. I remember on arriving at the 3 dollars to the pound days when a couple of aussies said the house prices were due to 'you cashed up poms, ruining it for us'. I could only smile.

you wont find zero unemployment anywhere, when the boom was on here it was not 0%. Any improvement for any country is good. just so long as i can cruise my cars and drink my tea, any increase in tea bag prices there will be another boston tea party, though the tea chests be empty of course

I love perth and portsmouth Paul, just making that commitment is the tough bit to be honest. My house is in a decent part opposite a large pond, with the sea at the end of the rd I,m 50 my trade in uk was always good to me since 16, I should gain my quals next year in my psychology which will make me more secure here in Perth as the trade not so good in Perth.( gas eng ). I noticed the wages btw London and Portsmouth have grown to similar prices, pompey is only 90 mins awy from London but oh so different. like to visit london but work there! was offered the use of a room to use to offer therapy in Harley st few years ago, rooms reminded me of jack the ripper days and i think i needed to take a ticket to be able to join the throng of people walking on the pavement, :-)
