  • How Hot is Australia?

    Guest The Pom Queen

People often say Australia is hot, but don’t realise how the climates change in each State.

‘Look at Queensland you can have the tropical rainforests from Townsville to Cooktown.

This 80 million years old tropical landscape is older than the Amazon and at 9000sq km is the size of somewhere like Cyprus. It consists of 30 National Parks and 2 World Heritage Areas, one of them being Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef.

Then still in Queensland you have over 51% of the State suffering the worst drought ever recorded.

And whilst all this is happening in the North, Victoria can go from one extreme to another. One month you can have Bush fires and the next snow. In fact people often joke that in Melbourne you can have 4 seasons in one day, but they are correct, it really does happen.

You will find most retirees head North from May - November for the lovely warm weather and then head back down South for their summer.

If you are on a WHV and travelling I would also suggest you look at the months and do the Top End in the dry season and then head to the South of Australia from November until May.

So to give you some idea of what the climates are like around Australia we found this map which will hopefully give you some idea on what temperatures to expect.

When I say Australia is hot, I'm comparing it with the UK rather than other places in the world, because that's what most Brits are used to.

If you flipped Australia over, so it was in the Northern Hemisphere, most if would be in Africa  (see below).

Of course, the climate isn't the same as Africa because there are so many other variables, like rain and winds and the proximity of the sea, plus the earth's tilt. But it does show that no one should be coming to Australia expecting a climate that is remotely like anything in Europe, even in their summer holiday spots in Spain or Cyprus.

You'll notice that with a couple of exceptions, most of the comparisons on the map are not in Europe.

Would be interesting to transpose this onto the Americas also.  I always equate Brisbane with Miami when explaining the climate to Brits who have never been here because many of them have been to Disneyworld, Florida. Temperatures year round are similar I believe as is the humid/hot summers and the drier, sunny winters.

My BiL lives in Atlanta.   They too have all 4 seasons and the temperatures almost uncannily reflects Canberra, right down to the sub-zeros in winter, very occasional snowfall and long hot summers.  We can pretty much guarantee that they get the opposite of what we're getting. much moreso than a comparison with the UK where we all originated from.

Where they vary is the humidity and thus the rainfall. I believe Canberra gets the better of that in that you can breathe and sleep better with cleaner air,  whereas Atlanta can be insufferable in summer.
