Hi all...

Finally - found people with a similar situation.

I'm not sure whether to go for 175 or try a 457. Or if I should be trying at all as it will be a large cost if refused.

I had a kidney transplant in 2000....

Any updates on costs if temp visa?

Cheers.

My wife and I are kidney transplant recipients also and we would go on my wife's 457 visa as she is a Registered Nurse.

Do you have any updates on what you have had to go through or any other tips eg, acceptance for private health insurance, txp meds, checkups, cost of med ??

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,

I'll just give an update, sorry I didn't realise that there were more of us. I'm going out on my OH's 457, in April. He's already out there. We're going to the Gold Coast, although he'll be working in Sydney, as we have very good ie helpful contacts there.

The 457 was sponsored and wasnt a problem, only I had to have a medical, that involved a quick examination by Dr Smith at Manchester (cant recommend him enough, as well as being super helpful and reassuring, he has some experience of renal issues), they also did a chest x ray, but not bloods, in the end the x ray wasnt needed.

We have private health with Australian Unity, doesnt seem a problem, but my OH arranged this so I need to check with him, if there were any issues but I dont think so.

My OH sponsoring company's visa agent has recommended going for onshore PR as soon as we ae all there (our son wont be out until June), this is based on my OH specialist skills and experience in his field, it's believed that I am below the threshold that the Govt allow, it's all really something you need to research on here. It's too specific to generalise and there are others who have posted who have better knowledge than me, in these matters.

In some ways you just have to take a leap of faith, I view it as an adventure, worth a try, but only time will tell. We're not the first as you can read from above, but I havent heard from the others in a while, but if we keep posting on this, it may catch their eye.

Take it one step at a time, and I'll advise as best I can along the way

Hi there,

Great to see more people in the same circumstances. Not that I would wish it on anybody.

We moved here in August on a 457 visa. All I needed was a letter from my nephrologist giving an update on my condition. So no medicals, which I was shocked at. We took out insurance for the 3 of us with medibank and this costs $352 per month and is just a fairly basic cover. We have had a few visits to the doc as my son got pneumonia before Christmas and I picked up a dose from him. The doc charges $65 and we get $45 back from the insurance. We had to get xrays and we weren't covered for that which was $40 each time. I have had a full range of bloods done including extra tests and a urinalysis and that cost $73. So far I am surviving on meds from home. So I haven't got a prescription filled. But I did speak to the pharmacist and it will not be a problem on the reciprocal agreement.

We are trying to buy our house and the bank keep changing the goal posts so we have decided to apply for the 857 RSMS visa. I will almost definitely have to do a medical for this. So fingers crossed. I have been referred for an appointment with a local nephrologist. But waiting lists over here seem to be longer than Ireland!!! I was blessed there I just rang my nephrologist and went to see him so a bit spoiled.

Healthwise this has been a great move for me and also our son who was born at 28 weeks. We are both healthier and fitter. Without doubt the right move for us. Any further questions that I can help with please do not hesitate to ask.

Good luck all,

Sian AKA Poly Nephrotic :)

Hi Mark,

Pls could you tell me which health fund you decided to go with and was there still a waiting period in light of her pre-existing condition and what response you got form the fund at application stage please? We would be on a 457 visa. Regards, John and Tracy

Hi Sian,

Pls could you tell me how Medibank viewed your pre-exisiting conditions and if there was a waiting period? How basic is your basic cover pls?

If there was, how did this affect the visa application and was a loading to the premium applied? Regards, JOHN and TRACY

Hi Cal,

Thanks for all the info.

We are based in Manchester. Could you provide any more info on Dr Smith and where you went to see him pls. Presumably he was appointed by MOC/DIAC to provide them with the answers they wanted to be able to grant your visa.

If you are able to provide any info about how Australian Unity viewed your pre-existing condition, costs and whether there was a waiting period that would be helpful. I assume that they loaded the premium but their decision satisfied the MOC?? My wife will have a 457 sponsored too.

Did the visa agent say what is the benefit of an onshore PR visa and how easy would it be to obtain with your health record??

Hi again Cal,

Do you have to pay for your transplant meds on a 457 or does the reciprocal agreement apply pls ? Would this situation change if you obtain an onshore PR Visa ??

If you pay what is the monthly costs, if you don't mind??

Hi,

not on everyday, so sorry I'm a bit slow in replying, bascially DIAc asked for a medical, you then go to one in the UK, who are on their approved list, Dr Smith at Manchester may not be the cheapest(I dont know), but it suited us. The private hospital he works at is next to an Asda, near a brewery, Broadwater I think it was called, super service. But you may not need a medical, some do, some dont it seems random and may depdent on which CO you get or which DIAC office.

As far as I know medicare will cover you as far as renal goes on a reciprocal agreement, but you must fulfill the criteria, is in my case a British citizen by birth, dont know what the costs are as my OH sorted it out, I'll try to remember to ask him, but he's abroad at the moment. I dont think having health insurance influences the MOD it 's a necessity for anyone on a 457 to have health insurance as part of meeting the 457 criteria I believe, and I dont think it's top loaded, if you take it our within so many months of arriving in Australia you get it at the set rate, you'll need to check on what it is.

You dont both need 457, you can apply under one person, for example, I'm on my husband's 457 as are our 3 children.

If you medical care comes under a certain amount then, PR is possible, you'll need to check on DIAC website how much that is.

Congrats Proview! That is great news. Our 457 visa is at processing commenced since 15th June. The agent included a letter I had from my nephrologist int he application so we will see what happens. Hope it comes through soon. Best of luck everybody else

xx

I was hoping to find out if your visa was approved even with the nephrotic syndrome? I have Membranous Nephrapathy (Kidney Disease) and I am about to apply for my 457 Visa. My company has sponsored many people in the past, but I am just concerned that I will get denied because of my diseas. I have normal kidney function, but my kidneys are leaking protein and I have high BP and cholesterol because of it. I plan on having my doctor include a letter stating this. Any advice is much appreciated!
