Rabies injection-had to buy 10 shot vile for my dog, anyone else finding in it hard?

Hi all,

First time posting on the forum, so forgive me. My wife and I are planning on moving to the UK in August of this year, and have just started the process of getting Chi, our Gordon Setter, all the required injections etc.

Having read the forums, I noticed there has been a shortage of the rabies injection due to an epidemic in Indonesia. I contacted my local AQIS certified vets in Sydney, and they have a 10 shot vile. Unfortunately I am the only person that has registered, and as it only lasts 24 hours I have to pay for the entire vile.

I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat, and would therefore be interested in sharing the cost? I have Chi booked in for 6.00 this Wednesday 19th Jan, so any interested parties would need to get it done some point between Wednesday morning and Thursday evening.

Not overly hopeful - but thought I would throw it out there and spreadg the word of mouth. FYI - the cost of the 10 shot vile is $375 (plus a $61 consult fee). I had previously been quoted $400 by another vet - so anyone looking at doing it in the near future, with the shortage, this owuld be a cheaper way to go (unless you are lucky and find a vets that has a few people booked in - we are pressed for time so this want a viable option for us).

As an aside - I started looking at the forums for the first time last week - and have found tonnes of useful information that is all helping making the task of moving Chi overseas much more easier - so a big thank you to all contributors.

Many thanks

Iain

We were faced with a similar situation until we found a nearby vet who had quite a few people making the same move and managed to arrange for all of us to go in on the same day so we split the vial between us. One women was taking 4 dogs back which was handy

We were faced with a similar situation we want to return later this year but our cat needs to go through the same process. We were looking at buying all ten shots but wewere very lucky to get an animal transport company that has several animals going back to UK and Europe so we will only pay for teh one. Fantastic service he picked up our act took him to the vet and will do the same again for the blood test. So maybe the same thing might happen for you there, when you ring round for travel quotes.

Yes I would phone around, you might be pleasantly surprised. According to our vet there are loads of people going back which lead to a shortage but they are now back on track.

If it comes to it let me know as I'm planning on getting my cat vaccinated, Theres a vets in neutral bay on Military road who do the vaccinations and i don't think you'll need to buy all 10.

Have you worked out the rest of the process for taking an animal to the UK yet?

I know this wasn't directed at me but I have decided to do it myself and not do it through one of the pet transport companies. It will save us well over $1000 and closer to $1500, it just means we have to do some paperwork and take the dog to the airport.

Chris I am sorry but this is a ridiculous comment from your vet and he obviously must be newly qualified if he hasn't heard that the Australia and New Zealand Government were told to ship all their vaccines to Indonesia:shocked:

There are many Australian vets currently stationed over there trying to help with the outbreak they are facing.

For anyone looking for the vaccine try the shipping companies they will be the first to get their hands on some as without the vaccine they are going to lose a lot of business. I know at the end of last year Jetpets were buying the 10 dose vials in and having a set day ie Friday where any dog that needed to be done would attend the clinic on that day, this saved people paying the $300 plus for just one dose.

Well, one of the issues we have is we have a pretty hard and fast time stamp of when we need to get there - early August. Thats why I'm so keen to get the injections done ASAP. Money isnt necessarily the issue - its the time I can get it done. This was more of an offer to other people to help them save some cash.

The problem I have is that I was told, incorrectly, that it was 6 months from time of injection to being allowed in the UK. Thats why I have left it until now - where I have realised its injection>4 weeks to blood>test-6 months before they can leave (or spend time in quarantine - which isnt an option, we couldnt do it to her!). Also, we have made firm committments that we will be there by early August, so this date isnt really flexible!

Also, as a result of this mis-hap, we have to be in the UK before the dog would be allowed, so I'm putting her in the kennels we have always taken her to for about 10 days, before the dog transport people collect her from there, take her to the airport, and arrange and conduct all of the final tests etc. Not the cheapest option, but unfortunately about the only one we have left!

As for companies - I have tried Jetpets and dogtainers - Jetpets quoting $4,100 and Dogtainers $3,600. This is for full collection, final checks, day boarding, flights and documentation then taking her to where we will be living in the UK.

Does anyone know of any better/cheaper companies, or (more importantly) has anyone heard anything good/bad about these companies, or any that should be avoided?

Thanks again to all

Just a note to anybody reading this who get their dog a pet passport.

The Rabies vaccination needs to be maintained in order to keep the passport valid, so if anyone is approaching the 3 (or 4?) year anniversary of their dogs rabies vaccination this offer of splitting the cost might be right up your street.

Hope it all works out for you.

Hi Iain

Both of these companies are highly reputable, we used Jetpets locally to transfer animals between specialists if our ambo was out of service. So no complaints here.
