Is Adelaide better than Queensland?

Hi everyone, I have been in Australia with my husband for 2 years in Queensland and I really hate it. For a while I loved the beaches, water and weather but now I feel a yearning for all things European. The casual racism, the brash stupidity of the overweight simple minded high viz yokels, the plastic retail park life style and the absence of any decent food or wine seems to represent the country to me now...

We are looking to move down to Adelaide in the hope things might be a little more sophisticated. Hopefully there might be some more intelligent people, a higher percentage of ethnic groups and alternative life stylers, good restaurants and bars and some pretty buildings.

Can any one give me an honest opinion? Is Adelaide worth it? Or should we just pack our bags and head home?

Sounds like Melbourne would be more suitable for you, specifically inner-city Melbourne? You don't say where you're living in Queensland - if it's an outer suburbs housing estate based around a big westfield centre, maybe move further in, somewhere like Paddington or New Farm? Heaps of decent food and wine around there!

I'd be heading to Melbourne or Sydney rather than S.A, but from your other posts, you don't seem to happy so if you can pack those bags and head home to where you will be happy rather than being bitter and twisted :wubclub:

I have been in Townsville... We sailed here on our yacht and just sort of stayed. Hopefully, this isn't representative of other places around. It is such a huge country it is difficult to check out places before you commit to moving there. We have been to Cairns, which did seem much nicer. Unfortunately, under our 457 visa, we have to stay 'regional' for 2 years. The only cities on offer , I think, are Hobart and Adelaide. Any more suggestions?

I must say, huge thanks! Within a few minutes of writing this I have lots of helpful replies...

I will check whether the Gold Coast is classed as 'regional' or not. Do you know Hobart at all? many thanks for the help! I am relieved to hear people describe Townsville as 'red neck' - at least there must be better places out there!!!!

Don't you? We do in out part of Brisbane

Not sure how good they are....at my daughter's last school she came home with her spelling words for the week and "brang" was one of the words!!! I complained to the teacher who told me quite emphatically that it was a word :chatterbox:

Yes go south, I can recommend it - Adelaide or Melbourne is quite different to Qld. Only my opinion of course, you may as well try it though if you are unhappy.

If you still have the yacht wouldn't it be possible to sail to check out other places without too much hassle? Sailing in southern Australia during the winter won't be very comfortable: it would be wonderful in summer, though.

Hobart is certainly rich in old buildings, good restaurants and wine (cool climate vineyards are just outside Hobart) , alternative lifestylers and the creative arts. A couple of websites to link:

Hear your pain, bit found your comments a bit odd. Would you judge the whole of the UK on one small far flung regional city? At least you are asking I guess.

Simplifying it down to whole states or whole capital cities might put me in the "simple minded yokel" category.

While overall the larger the capital city the greater the access you will have to the things you listed, more specifically it will come down to where you live in each city.

For example, a yokel suburb in Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney will be far less sophisticated than parts of Brisbane and vice versa.

I must apologise for alienating all Queenslanders! I wanted to say 'Townsville' but then I thought it would be very rude to specialise so I generalised to 'Queensland'. I would like to retract the 'Queensland' - and replace it with 'Townsville'....!:spinny:

Brang is not a word! It is a mistaken attempt at the past participle of 'to bring' often made by children. Take it from an English teacher!!!!
