Thanks all for your replies :notworthy:

Drh - Carolanne is the master of countdowns! lol

Woohoo - and carolanne keeps giving me count downs, apparently its 3 months and 3 weeks now lol

Adam - still chuckling at your loss for words!

(now struggling to find the word for kids you had a hand in making without offending step kids lol)
And yes if we get there, it looks like (as the wife!) I'll be our only households immigrant/non-citizen for 4 yrs too! :err:

Anita - What a shame about your daughters citizenship, hope they change the rules to suit her, very soon. Looking from what's been said Steve and the kids will be citizens after 3 months and I'll be waiting 4 years. Also I'm glad to know we don't need to bother renewing the girls (2 yrs old & 12yrs old) passports as they won't expire for another 2 years after we get there.

Thanks again

Liz

Liz/Steve Re: your daughters passports.

Your concerns make sense but it sounds like their existing passports will be valid for a while after you (and they) gain citizenship by default through their father.

But, scenario for you. If you allow any of your UK passports to expire and then travel on the Aus ones, when you return to the UK they will not be able to enter via the EU Citizens route. Not sure how important/unlikely this is. But if you travel back as a family with one or more member not having a UK passport, you will have to queue up with the Non EU's to get in to the country.

May sound trivial, but with Airlines starting to fly 500+ seater A/C would you want to queue for an hour to get back in or breeze through the EU gate in minutes? Just a thought.

Anyone got to the Visa question: 'list countries you've visited outside Australia in the last 10 years' ?

With dates!!

I must have visted dozens of them with about 2 six month deloyments and loads of small trips I can't remember them all, let alone when I went, do we get a waiver on that question?

I dont want to hijack this thread, but can you all have a look at this post http://http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/jobs-careers/95546-rn-ran-exercise-programme-long-look.html#post863243

Err no, it doesn't seem to work - whats it about, I can see something about long look in the title.

BTW for all those at the waiting for TORs stage, I already have TORs but I've just been sent a form to sign to say I agree to 6 years return of service instead of the previous 3. So if that conflicts with your plans for Oz (you only planned to do 3) it may be worth thinking about

Cheers

On the six years return of service I was sent info in January pointing out that they had increased this to six. I guess they want a fair return of service versus the cost of getting UK RN out there.

Ironduke,

With regards to all the countries visited, I just put my Civilian Hols in and a few others untill it was full, otherwise we will be there all day. Also, I got my Visa without any issues at all.

Regards to the 13th Jan crew lol

Hey Guys,

Sorry if i'm hijacking someone elses post. Quite new to this. 26 year old Chief Submariner currently on Trenchant. Ten years done and thinking of moving out there at my twelve year point. Married with two young children and could really use some advice. Such a huge decision on whether or not to go for it. Really need some pointers. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Check the email again there should be an attachment to download which is near identical to the one we received many moons ago, it has the revised terms on it and a signing slip on the bottom. You're meant to print it off and post the whole thing to Terry, meanwhile the proper copy is on its way from Oz and that too will have to be signed and sent back. Just to make sure I replied to the email acknowledging receipt and that I had posted my positive response.

Hi Ben - this is the correct post for your question and no doubt you've read through it and got some great advice already. Its worth asking any questions again even if its been covered before because things change and you need the up to date answers, so don't hold back - you don't tend to get knobs on this thread trying to tell you how to live your life, just honest opinions with a service slant and practical stuff too.

The move will be great for me as I've done my 22, can carry my sea time and experience with me, don't have to retire until I drop, getting paid more as a Oz PO than I did as a RN CPO, I get my RN pension paid still, my time counts toward their pension. The kids should get a better education, if not I suppose I'll be earning enough to pay for it! I'm not sure if the way of life is better without living there so can't answer that. Just think of all those ex-pats you used to meet when on deployment and envied their way of life (well I did lol) hopefully it'll be similar.

I suppose the no--brainer is that they haven't got a recession and stacks of natural resources so there will plenty of employment when you've done your 6 years.

The reasons for going are well covered on the site as well as the reasons not to - only you and the Mrs can decide. The opportunity we have that the civvies don't get is that its all free so there is no financial risk.

All the best

Oh dear looks like you are going to busy! BTW - Is that about 6 months before they send a pack? Is it in digital form (wouldn't mind taking a look at one hint, hint) anyway take it easy buddy I'm sure they won't be too upset if you are slightly late

Ben, any decision to uplift and move such a distance is only something that you and ya family can make. But, there is loads of information and personal experience here on POI as a whole and most can be very useful in making a decision. Ultimately it costs nothing to do some early research and make contact with Terry George in Oz and see if they are recruiting your specialisation (hmmm, something makes me think they will be!) and then go from there.

But Iron Duke is right. If you are determined to migrate to Oz then the laterral route removes a great deal of the pain that non sponsored migrants are facing these days.

Iron duke,

The Pickfords paperwork isnt that bad, they give it you upon inspecting your home or you can get it sent to you from the girls at Australia House in London. However, it just depends what stage your at. I would advise against it untill you have sent off for your Visa as it may appear alot in amongst everything else. One step at a time if you know what I mean

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the thread otherwise known as the 'RAN lateral transfer waiting room' :err:

Also suggest you read back throught the posts, we have found invaluable info from here. We've had long periods of 'no news' in between the different application stages and it's been very frustrating but reassuring to know we're not the only one's that have had to wait.

It took us a few weeks to work out whether we wanted to go for it or not. So many things to consider - kids, family, whether to join another Navy or just go outside. But our thoughts are that we need to try it for ourselves and if we don't like it, then we'll come back after 6 years knowing we gave it a go. Can't stand the thought of getting 10 years down the line and thinking 'what if we'd done that?'.

Have a look on the RAN overseas recruitment site, they have list of the currently required branches/ranks on there. Worth sending off an 'expression of interest' form (found on the RAN site), this goes to Terry George (the RAN recruitment guy), he usually replies within a couple of days and if they need your branch then he usually sends you an application pack (by attachment to his email) which gives a bit of info about the application process, living/working in Australia, application forms, etc.

Good Luck with your decision making, if there's anything you need to know just ask, someone on here will most probably know the answer. Feel free to PM us too.

Cheers

Liz and Steve
