Hi really interested to here how this pans out as Sarah will be a Mental Health Nurse and I am an electrician.

I get the impression that by going over on your VISA your OH doesn't have to do the VETASESS assessment and can carry out an assessment in OZ to work as an electrician?

Also we are looking at either Adelaide or Brisbane, not sure where would be best for both of our trades?

James

Hi James,

You are 100% correct I am a Secondary Maths Teacher and I did my skills assessment (costing about £300) and then state sponsorship for SA. My OH Paul didn't do any of the VETASSESS (as it would have cost a fortune). As soon as we got our visa he did the ARTC (as above) and that cost £200. He now justs needs to do his PEER wiring regs and then he will have is class A licence for SA. We were recommended to do it this way by a migration expert at an expro (the best free advice we have had).

We were undecided for ages about which state to move to, but we decided SA as it was much easier for my OH to get his class A and start work straight away. When we went on our validation visit my OH was offered a job on a tram, just by chatting to someone and was told they are crying out for sparkies - let's hope that's the case!

My best friend has just applied for her 176 visa (and for her family) and she is a mental health nurse and thay have done the same route as us (her OH is a plumber). She did the ANAMC assessment, IETLS and state sponsorship and they had enough points and saved a fortune. Someone she worked with moved to SA and they are crying out for mental health nurses apparently (but she was warned mental health care is a few years behind what they do in the UK).

Good luck - let us know where you decide to go.

Thanks for your quick response that is really helpful. We have three children so would be looking to go over on a PR visa. On a State sponsored Visa are there any restrictions? We are getting muddled with all the different types of visas. Would we have to pay for education for example? is state sponsored generally a better option than the usual PR visa?

Also; (forgive me if I have missed it in a post) did your OH run his own business in the UK? If he did how did he feel about working for someone else again?

The 176 is a PR visa and you get free education and access to medicare etc. The only thing is you are promising to live in the state that sponsors you for a minimum of 2 years once you get there. We have 2 children so, I agree with you, wouldn't go without a PR visa. With state sponsorship it means you get extra points (hence not needing the VETASSESS) and your visa gets processed quicker than a 175.

My OH runs his own business and says he's OK about working for someone else (I'm not sure he's been 100% honest). We are both looking forward to having a wage and not doing paperwork though!

Just received an email from PEER saying,

Also just so you are aware there has been discussion on a National Licensing system being introduce from July 1st 2012. It is unclear whether SA Licensing will change their process on gaining a SA Electrical License. Each state have not yet come to an agreement on which process they want to introduce, as other states don’t like the TRA method and want to keep the log book in action, however South Australia want to keep the TRA method.

Either way Licensing goes you will still require to do the Wiring Regs course, just wanted to keep you up to date on what’s going on.

Hi there,

Thanks for that. That's a very interesting post. WA have recently changed their licencing and assessment procedures for oversea trained sparks. Up until recently, you only had to do a 2 week course in Perth and then could apply for a full licence.

Now they require on the job gap training for up to 12 months for holders of an OTSR although it may be shorter for holders of an ARTC.

Looks as though SA is coming under pressure from all the other states to change their procedures with the advent of a national licencing system.

Congrats on your ARTC. I've just been granted mine today after a 6 week wait. Yay!

Hi Not sure if anyone can help. I am struggling to fill in the ARTC application; as he has been self employed for years there seems to be more information needed of you. It states that you can get an authorised representative for the applicant to help with the application process however can't find anything on google- did anyone use this route if so could you recommend a 3rd party to help?

Thanks

Hi there,

There used to be a fellow called Glenn Newton who was the Director of the TRA during the 90's who specialised in this type of thing. He has, I believe, since retired but his ex colleagues at www.australianmigrationsolutions.com should be able to help.

So today I am tasked with writing to all the hubby's old employers to request references. Can anyone tell me if they have to write a long reference or just full the form in and then we pad out the application with the details of the type of work he has carried out and the tools he's used etc. Really don't know where to begin with all that bit....any help out there?/

Hopefully after reading through these posts you'll know how much detail TRA require for employer references. What I think is best is that you write the reference, pass it on to your ex employers and ask them to add/delete where they deem appropriate. You want to get it right first time and not to have to keep going back. A telephone call to ask them if it would be ok to do it this way wouldn't do any harm..............

Hi Lisa,

Have a read through this LINK. It shows examples of employers references that were submitted for an ARTC but would be the type of thing VETASSESS are looking for as well.

What's the difference between general and special class spark

Special class here

http://www.acacia-au.com/asco/4311-13.php or http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupations/e/electrician-special-class.htm

General here

http://www.acacia-au.com/asco/4311-11.php or http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupations/e/electrician-general.htm

I would think in the UK a general electrician is a commercial, industrial or domestic electrician who carries out the installation of cables, distribution boards etc....

A special class electrician is someone who works on more complex electrical stuff like plc's, vsd's etc.... BUT in my experience can and does do what a general electrician does. I have been employed at 3 factories since I left school just over 20 years ago and have done all the installation work that was required along with the maintenance of these factories, why TRA see things differently when it comes to awarding the ARTC I dont know ???? and why you cant get a unrestricted license with the experience, again is anyones guess ??????

Arrived in NSW a week ago, done a few tourist things and today set about the dreaded license thingy.

Went to NSW office of fair trading with my VETASSESS certificate, a passport photo, and $126.......easy as that.

I will receive a provisional electrical license in around 4-6 weeks meaning I can work as an electrician as long as I am supervised which suits me as I will be employed by an electrical contracting company.

Hi,

Has anyone found it easy to find a job? I am predominantly a domestic electrician although have some experience in other fields and me and my family arrive in Perth January 13th 2012. I will have to activate my restricted license but the only thing I am worried about is that I dont have a job to go to. Are there plenty of jobs in Perth?pref NOR, and if so can anyone point me in the right direction for sorting out a job before we arrive? or is it easier to do once we have arrived?

thanks

you should pick up a job handy enough I had 3 job offers within a week of arriving all from domestic / small commercial electrical contractor. You will find it easier to get a job with one of the smaller companies without the a-grade. Every wed and sat there are plenty of domestic electrician jobs advertised in the western australia newspaper most will say a-grade required but just apply anyway or you could try get onto one of the bigger construction sites as a trade assistant thats what I did and the money as a TA on the big union sites is much better than the pay for a-grade sparkys on small domestic jobs . I was worrying before I came over about getting a job without the license but there was no need to be. Any further q's just ask

Thanks for the reply, thats all really helpful and reassuring.

Is there any other license's that I will require?i.e. for working on sites? and will I be able to apply for these at the same time as my restricted license?

Can I be really cheeky and just ask what sort of money I would be looking at, on average working for a small firm and also working as a trade assistant? just so we can get a rough idea on areas that we may be able to afford.

Thanks again for your help.

Well I haven't done any other courses apart from getting my white card but will probably do my ewp and confined spaces and senior first aid course over the next while. I was getting 32 dollars an hour with the domestic company was doin some overtime so was getting about 1200 a week after tax. At the moment I'm getting 45 an hour as a TA plus penalties, the sparkys on the site get 51 an hour plus penalties.

It's a large union site so rates / conditions will usually be quite good, its local work, I found the job advertised in the Western Australia and just sent in my CV and got a call back that evening.

Hi Mick

Did you have to join the union?

Wouldn't mind keeping in touch...to pick your brains.

My email if interested. testerman.ok@gmail.com
