ADD diagnosed when my son was 5, now nearly 16 - Will this affect our application?

Hi all,

I dont know if anyone has had any experience with anything like this, but my son was diagnosed with ADD when he was just 5 years old, he will be 16 in December.

He does not take any medication & no longer has to see a specialist.

He is doing really well & his school has really helped him, he will be leaving at Easter 09 & will have some good exams, one of which being a Duke of Edinborough award.

He has just finished work experience for a Mercedes Benz body repair garage & did really well.

Basically what im trying to say is that he is growing into a very well adjusted young adult & I know I could get many professionals & teachers to fully back me up on this.

But does it affect our application?

Will it affect your application? I would say probably not. They are most concerned about people who are going to pose a significant cost to the Australian tax payer so if he was in a special school and likely to be eligible for the disability pension then there would be much more of an issue. Obviously talk it over with your agent but judging by reports from others who have children with mild disabilities I would think you will be fine. Just be sure to provide the evidence of unsupported mainstream education and successful work experience to add to the picture.

Good luck!

Thankyou Quoll, although he is in a special school at the moment (hes only been in it for the last year, the rest of his education was in mainstream) the school has been BRILLIANT for him, as I say he will be leaving in April 09, so when he gets to Australia, he will be going out there & getting a job, hopefully in body car repairs/car spraying, which I believe Australia need more of also, so hopefully he will be an assett.

Kindest Regards,

Hi Cartertucker

We are in the process of moving to OZ and my son has AHD, diagnosed, when he was 8, now 17. He left school with 8 grade C's and now is at college doing a electricians course what he wants to persue when he gets to OZ. You will have no issues with your application or medicals, what I will say is get your sons consultant to write a letter of development, stating what your son has acheived with ADHD, how he is not going to be a burden , and is capabvle of obtaining and sustaining employment. Get them to also mention that he is no longer on medication due to the fact that he has matured into his condition and no longer requires it. (no cost to the OZ health service, as these medications are expensive in OZ). I requested my sons consultant did this for us and they happily did, wonderful letter, and it put closer on his condition. Good luck in your application and I hope this puts your mind at rest.

Kind regards

Tracey

Hi Kelly

Good luck, these people are in general very helpful, it may take the specialist a few weeks to get round to it but they will and then issue solved. How far own the line of the visa application are you we are hoping to get a CO in the next nmonth or posibly two as we applied on the 30th of April.

Mind you if the housing market continues the way it is we will not be going as the money in the house is what we ned to finance the move, and it was going to be tightbefore the market started going mad!!!

Well must get on with some work, any more help required PM me.
