Car Insurance in UK on Australian Licence

If you’re borrowing a car from a family member/friend them ask them to contact their insurers.  My son came over for a two week visit last Christmas and I put him on my insurance.  Only cost me £20 and that was the admin charge. There was actually no charge for him being on it.

If borrowing a car this is the only way to do it. Two insurance companies cannot insure the same vehicle at the same time

As others have said, in that case your parents have to ask THEIR insurer if you can be covered. You can't get another insurance policy on a car that's already covered by someone else.

Google says you can , not recommended but technically you can. Though obviously you cant claim twice .

That's true in Australia, not true in UK. There is a whole "secondary insurer" market. Google marmalade insurance.

Its designed to allow kids to build up insurance on car without affecting mum and dad no claims bonus, but also useful for borrowing a mates car for a few days and not risking their no claims

Well there you go, I've learned something, thanks.

Can confirm the above two posts. When we went to the UK in June my dad called his insurance company, but they wouldn't insure us as we didn't have a permanent UK address.  This was different to our 2019 trip, where it was minimal cost (as mentioned above)  Think there must have been some changes (Brexit maybe...)

Ended up hiring a car as we didn't want to do anything dodgy! (At significant cost, so bear that in mind)
