Skilled Visa Don't know where to start

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me. I am hoping to move out to Australia in the next 2 years. I am a qualified social worker who has 2 years post qualifying experience. I am wanting to move with my daughter who is 16yrs (will be 18 at time of moving) and my mother who is in her early 70s.

I don't know where to start? I have had a look online and there is an array of immigration advice and agents who state they can help you with the immigration process. I don't know who best to go to or where I should start.

Thank you in advance for any help and advice 😊

Your daughter will need to be dependant on you so will need to be in education at time of visa grant.  If she is in full time work she will be classed as independent.  As Paul says, your mum can’t move with you but subject to passing a balance of family test she can possibly apply for a parent visa at a later stage.  I suggest you contact Paul for a consultation so you get all the facts right. Good luck.

Thank you Paul.  Yes my daughter will be dependent on me Tulip as she will still be in full-time education at the time of applying for the visa. Thank you for your advice also Tulip that is really helpful.  I have done the application online with Suncoast Migration. Not holding out much hope of obtaining a visa due to my age etc plus Temporary Skilled Visa's have been withdrawn at present. It not looking good 😔

@Cally, sorry, I missed the mention of your mother. I'm afraid getting your mother to Australia will be difficult if not impossible.

You won't be eligible to even apply to bring your mother to Australia until you've been settled in Australia for at least 2 years.  Then once you submit the application, there will be a waiting period of about 10 years before she will get her visa. And that's assuming you can afford the visa fee, which is currently around $40,000 and is likely to be very much higher by the time you're eligible to apply).

Currently, it is possible to bypass the system (once you're eligible after the 2 years), by bringing your mother over on a tourist visa, then applying for a parent visa while she's in Australia. 'She would then get a bridging visa which would allow her to stay in Australia as a temporary visitor until the visa comes through.  But that does mean living in a kind of limbo for all those years, not entitled to any support in Australia because she's just a visitor, but no longer resident in the UK either. And it is quite likely that they'll have closed that loophole by the time you want to take advantage of it.

This means you will need to apply for a 189 or 190 visa as these convey PR immediately.

A 491 (which is easier to get and there are more careers covered by) is a pathway to PR, which means in the intervening years (4 years) you would be paying overseas rates at an Aussie University for your daughter's education (about 2.5 times the home student rate).

You need to make sure your agent is aware that your daughter will be studying and that affects which visa you should apply for. (Of course points and availability might remove this choice element)

I think your daughter would need to be dependent at the time of visa grant (not just application).  As suggested, do have a chat with a good agent about pathways, you'll also need to undertake a skills assessment (AASW) before submitting your visa application

That's true, when we got our grant, our child was just 18 (by 2 weeks).

We got a request the day after her 18th birthday to prove she was still dependent on us (can't remember the number of the form we had to fill in)

Really easy to do as she was at school so we could show us paying the school fees, school transport costs and for all her clothes and tutoring costs.
