PE Teacher (hoping) to move Down Under

Hi all,

I've just signed up to this to hopefully engage with you all and to gain some knowledge!

I am at the start of my application stage and I was just flicking through jobs last night on seek.au

Currently, I am working as a PE teacher at a Sixth Form College delivering A - Levels & BTEC qualifications. Whats everyones thoughts on securing a teaching position Down Under?

My aim is to move to QLD around the Brisbane area. Ideally, I'd like to move into a PE position - but I'm happy to get into any education position to give me the the experience required.

Any thoughts would be received with a happy face :)

Thank you in advance guys,

Ben

How old are you?  If you're under 30, then the easiest (and probably most sensible) thing to do is to come over on a Working Holiday Visa.   Application is easy and you're usually approved within days, then you can come and work in Australia for a year (or 2 years if you're willing to do a few weeks of farm work).   You can't work for the same employer for more than six months, but then you'll probably want to do some travelling anyway.  You'll have to go home at the end of it, though.

If you''re looking for a more permanent move, then the first question is - are you eligible?   It's not enough to want to move - there is a list of occupations, and if your  occupation isn't on the list, you can't get in. Even if your occupation is on the list, you're not safe yet - the list also specifies the qualifications and experience you must have.

If you can manage to get to Australia, you can work in any job you like - but you've got to get past the gates first!

I have no idea what qualifications a PE teacher needs to have or what your chances are, no doubt someone else will have more knowledge.

Phys Ed is a mandatory part of schooling here, both in primary and secondary schools, so you could work in either.

First of all you need to meet the required four years of tertiary education with 45 days (minimum) of supervised teaching. They do not accept three years here. If you already have this, then great, that is one hurdle out of the way.

The area that you want to move to is popular and you will have great difficulty securing a position in a government school, you may have more luck in a private school though.

Hi guys

Thanks so much for leaving a reply to my topic. Really appreciate it.

On looking back, I guess my topic was slightly brief and could do with some detail.

I was on a working holiday visa (2 year) when I was 19 (now 28) and loved the country . My sister and brother live in Brisbane plus I have many friends over there. It’s always been an ambition to get over there - but the timing was never right.

I studied 3 years BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching & Physical Education. Plus one year PGCE. I trained for post 16 but can teach secondary too.

I can imagine that PE is very popular and has little demand for jobs because a lot of people want to do it.

To give me a head start, where should I be looking for teaching jobs? Is there anything I can do to get ahead of others? Or should I potentially retrain?

I have been in discussions with Go Matilda to help with my applications - any recommendations?

Thanks guys

Ben

It seems to be the most popular occupation in Australia! We have many Phys Ed qualified teachers who are sharing a little Phys Ed but are teaching science. As you teach at a six form college what age range did you train in?

Apologises for late reply.

I am currently teaching 16-19 year old. However, with my qualification I can teach from 14 years old and above.

Thank you

Australia is a PE teachers dream! Sport plays such a big part of the school life over here. What visa do you plan to come on?

Haha I know. I need to live this dream!! :)

I’m looking at all options at the moment. I was in Australia for 2 years on a working holiday visa some time ago. I would like to end up in QLD.

Thanks for the interest and offering your help

Thanks
Ben

Thank you for spending the time to reply.

I used up my working holiday when I was younger.

A migration agent has been looking into my experience, qualifications etc and it appears I am eligible. So fingers crossed.

Thank you again

The first thing to consider is visa and if you qualify for a visa. For example, for a teacher to pass a skills assessment, you will need 4 years of universty

Hello! Thanks for replying to my post.

Yes I have a 3 year degree and additional year at uni to achieve my PGCE!

Thank you
