Yes. DO IT Great idea!

Boris Johnson floats idea of Channel 'bridge' at UK-France summit

The Foreign Secretary is understood to have told French ministers of his plan for a new "fixed link" over the channel.

Could the Channel be bridged?

The man is truly a plank, a self publicist on par with Trump, on par with his stupid bus, apart from cost, and who would bankroll it, Carillon etc, the channel is the busiest waterway in the world with  some of the largest ships in the world using ports on both sides, the risks of a collision would be high and the consequences unthinkable, the engineering challenges are insurmountable in terms of water depths and carrying out construction in such a busy waterway.

A lazy thinker with a obsession for upstaging anyone with greater power than he has, always a populist with an eye to the main chance, a vain and venal self promoter.

Must be honest I was unsure how that would work with the amount of shipping in that area.

Boris really is odd! Bet he's PM one day!!

I think the more he exposes himself to scrutiny the less likely it becomes I hope, even the stupidest end of the party must by now realise he is a loose cannon and thick with it, mind you that has not been a barrier in the past, Chamberlain, Douglas-Home, Heath.?

Do you think we could build it Simmo? You would probably need to build some islands and join them up, but the Chinese are good at doing that.

Shame we are just about to destroy our trade with Europe.

Maybe we could reverse brexit and build the bridge, then we would really be part of Europe!

(bridge or no bridge) Do you honestly believe that post brexit  1000s of containers won't be traversing over the channel every day? do you believe a few stuffed shirts in Brussels will stop that?

If the likes of Brunell listened to the likes of you there would never have been an industrial revolution.  Ships navigate sandbars and other obstacles in the region every day. Do you think a few concrete columns at something like 1000 - 1500m centers would be a problem?

And how many near misses are there out there because of incompetent crews on ships flagged in Liberia and other low reg registrations with crews dragged together from famous maritime nations like Pakistan and Vietnam.

One of the biggest ships is 400m x 60m and approx 200,000 tonnes deadweight, imagine that in a force 6 wind.navigating up the channel to Rotterdam.

For Russian aircraft carriers?

Hopefully even now Boris realises it was a stupid thing to say.

Next he'll suggest a teleport system.

The man's an idiot.

Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it and use the best civil engineers.

The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China.

It stretches 102.4 miles from Shanghai to Nanjing as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, it's the longest bridge of any kind, anywhere in the world. Sometimes, bridge names can seem a bit pretentious but in this case, the ''Grand Bridge'' seems to be a well-deserved title.  Mind you it's only over water for 5 miles.

You sound like the detractors who rubbished Stevenson about his railway.

if this was a serious idea ,and this bridge worth billions of pounds was built .

every time there was an issue wih the French , whether that be French farmers or the French unions .....they would just blockade the bridge and render it useless ....and we know how often the French go on strike

if our future is with europe ,and that has to be dover to Calais via a bridge or a tunnel , then this is a real worry .

The French could technically shut down any European traffic at the drop of a hat .

regardless whether you are remain or brexit ,do you want to hang your nations trading future on such a tenuous thread ?

no thanks

in relation to boris johnsons £350 million to the e.u per week ,that was always bollocks ...its actually £150 -225 million per week after everything is taken into account .

but GROSS Tha £350 million is due to rise to £471 million per week in the next 5 years .

we are better off ,out of it ,as the e.u global trade is due to drop from 13% to as low as 9% .

the e.u is failing ,with other countries looking to leave ...its only a matter of time .
