Skiing in Australia

:)

We are considering a holiday next winter and skiing came up. Not been for a few years so it appeals.

Does anyone have any recommendations for where to go location wise within Australia? Or at a push NZ? Looking at self catering over catered probably as quite a lot of us and we prefer an apartment or house over hotel rooms.

Thanks in advance :)

Do you think that it worth going on a trip to Mt Perisher within a day?

It's too far to travel from Sydney to the snow in a day. Thousands of people go for the weekend, though. The Hume Highway south out of Sydney is wall to wall snow traffic in the winter.

It's quite feasible to leave the city on Friday afternoon, drive down to Jindabyne or wherever, arriving 10 pm-ish. This gives you a full day and a half on the slopes before driving back on Sunday afternoon/evening.

We've done it plenty of times in the past.

Hey snifter,

Where are you located?  I'm pretty familar with the NSW resorts but not the Victorian ones.  Have had a season pass for the last 4 years for Perisher.  What's your budget?

In NSW, the 2 main resorts are Perisher and Thredbo.  Jindabyne is the closest town and many people stay in Jindy and either drive up and down day to day (30-40 mins) or you can get the skitube to Perisher (20 min drive and 10 minutes up). It is expensive to stay on snow so many people stay in Jindy.  Jindy is quite a decent sized town with supermarkets, bars and lots of restaurants etc.

Depending on when you leave Sydney, Jindy is 5-7 hours from Sydney, 2 from Canberra.  best I have ever done is 5 hours, leaving at 4am and driving straight through.  Leaving anytime after 3pm on a Friday adds 1-2 hours to the trip (M5 carpark).  If you are in the Shire or south, it is often quicker to go down the Princes highway and then cut over at Picton or lower.  Useful to have more than 1 driver, especially for the return journey when everybody is tired

Goulburn isn't a bad place to stop for a break (Goulburn Workers Club does good food) and is about 1/2 way time wise.  The new road through Canberra has shaved about 15-20 mins off the journey which helps but be careful there are about 10 speed cameras on that Canberra stretch (from before the airport to the Cooma road)

Ski tube

The advantage of the ski tube is that you don't need the National park pass for the car and you don't need to carry snow chains.  It gets you up and down pretty quickly and most of the group I know who go regularly (ie every weekend) tend to use the tube for Perisher, Thredbo - you are driving.

Thredbo has a nicer town and longer runs but is not as high as Perisher or as big.  So it really depends on the snow.  Nicer village, restaurants and bars etc, more of a European feel.

Perisher has a bigger ski area with Mount Perisher and Blue Cow the 2 main areas for intermediates, Guthega is great when there is snow.  There is not a lot in Perisher village and it doesn't have the same atmosphere as Thredbo.  A couple of nice bars, Sundeck is on snow and a nice end of day meeting place.    The man from snowy river is a nice pub with a big fire and does good pub grub (not over priced).

If you have a group, staying on snow in a lodge is great, hard to get and can be expensive.

I know of a great house for self catering, sleeps 10, every room en-suite.  It is out of Jindabyne but closer to the thredbo ski fields (30 minutes) and only 5 minutes to the ski tube.  Look up Andrea's white house.  I have stayed there and it is very nice, with a big open fire and underfloor heating.  You are not walking distance to Jindy so once you are there, you are not moving.

Ski pass

If you are going to go for >6/7 days it may be worth buying a season pass.  Gives you discounts in resort and also gives you sking in Vail resorts in Canada and the US the following year (Vail owns Perisher).

NZ - Queenstown is great.  2 main ski areas, Coronet Peak and the Remarkables.  No on snow accomodation so people stay in Q'town and either drive or get the shuttle up and down.  I haven't been in quite a while but it's awesome.  Wanaka/Cardrona are about an hour away and Cardrona is meant to have super sking.  If you do the fly/drive option from Christchurch (c. 6 hours), it is one of the worlds most spectacular drives, absolutely stunning.

Hope this helps, any specific questions feel free to PM me.
