You can ask for unpaid leaves. This way you won't impact on immi situation.

Anyone can confirm this?

Hey Yes you can definitely ask for unpaid leave as long as your first 2 years salary met the 457 minimum salary requirement and your boss agreed for your leave.

I just got back from 2 month overseas unpaid leave.

Hi redheaven, hope you are still checking this - is the follow-up opportunity 6 months after nomination or visa approval? Also, would you know if direct applicants can follow up? My organisation has staff and MAs for the nomination side, but we applied directly for our visa. Thank you!

I have been reading the messages in this forum for the last week or so, just stumbled across it as I've been getting anxious about my application - but I was very happy today to receive my visa approval and thought I would share my timeline for reference. Good luck to everyone still waiting...I hope you'll all be writing one of these messages soon.

Additional note: the MA I used said they could only follow up on the application with the DIBP after 6 months (5/08/16). They emailed the DIBP on 11/08/16 and the approval came through the following day.

Hi Hasc, I hear ya. We've been in Australia nearly 9 years now, too and have had various temporary visas...which is why our patience is really, really thin at this point. It feels like so much of our lives have been on pause while waiting to gain permanent status here.

We weren't able to lodge our visa until about 6 months from the time employer said yes so it feels like we've been waiting since..and in the last 9 years! I hope we all get our papers soon.

Not sure where you came up with this theory but it doesn't make any sense. Many applicants got asked for additional information and still got their nomination or visa granted within a month...

You know when your new at school at work or anywhere you don't talk too much. you should first learn listen observe then you speak. If you do that then it will make sense to you

You are trolling, right? Just look at the spreadsheet and you will realise that the theory you brought up does not make any sense...

Hi Yasaima, we previously tried going down the 457 to 186 transition stream via my spouse too, but it didn't work out. We've had many unfulfilled pathways that were just enough to keep us holding on - to say it's been excruciating is an understatement but we are certainly survivors - surviving with our sanity anyway, ha ha!

In saying that, I'm shocked at how anxious we are becoming - so near yet so far! I wonder what determines the speed in processing times - why some take 8-11 months, whilst others are processed in 2-5 months!

It's only been around 4 months from 186 lodgement but it's been 9+ months since we started preparing and yes, nearly 9 years here now. It's mind boggling. Praying we didn't make a mistake investing this much of our lives here and that this pathway ends positively.:frown::chatterbox:

I would like to stay positive but some days, it's harder. I'm sure many can relate - thank God we have this forum!

9 years.....that hurts....

For me, 2 years, normal process from 457 -> 186 is already enough for me. I really don't like the feeling that I am constrained. I have seen great ppl, great opportunities however, i can't go for it...

In relation to my post above, just wondering if anyone knows if there is a reason that processing times vary so distinctly - from as long as 8-11 months to as fast as 2-5 months! I'm aware that submitting complete applications is a plus, but apart from that, are any of the below indicators of processing times?

- HR vs LR

- 186 transition VS direct entry?

- Type of nominated occupation?

- Employer - Company size?

- Employer - Status/history with DIBP, for example, would a more "reliable" company (ie. government, multinationals, etc.) with a positive track record as a sponsor mean that it will be processed faster?

- Onshore vs offshore?

- Anything else considered?

Hope someone can shed light, thanks!

Apparently the dept would only respond to queries 6 months after the visa application was submitted. Direct applicants can definitely follow up and I would do so if I were you. I hope that if yours was submitted more than 6 months ago, they will review it ASAP - that seems to be what happened with mine. Good luck!

Hi all,

just a a quick question regarding the 186 visa. I have been offered employment by a company in Australia (I am currently in the UK) and am wondering what route to go down for visas- either the 457 or 186, and wanted clarification on my eligability for these.

I am a trained probation officer which is listed on the CSOL list, I have a relevant degree in the field (BA criminology), and have worked for 2 years in the relevant occupation. My first question is, is 2 years long enough work experience for the 186 visa? I also have 1 years volunteer experience again in the relevant field so could this be counted for points?

I still need to make up points through the English test etc so if the points are made up, is the years experience irrelevant?

Thanks for for your help ;) so confusing!

U gonna have to fulfill all criteria which is clearly listed on website to go through 186 stream on your occupation, and one of those is skill assessment which is for some job position tougher to pass.
