Louisej323
Hi Guy's, I've been reading the posts of this thread and hoped I also could get some advice. I'm looking at a 457 sponsorship visa. I have been told by a migration agent that that is my only option due to not having a degree. I have worked in my profession (tv and Broadcast Media) for 20 years with the BBC and have GCSE's, A-Levels and an abundance of expertise and knowledge, just no media degree. Do I need qualifications for a sponsorship visa or does work experience and proof i can do the job account for more? Also has anyone ever applied for a 457 sponsorship visa by themselves and found their own employer rather than through a migration agent? Also how do I gain a skills assesment for my career? I have seen some of you have gone down the EOI route to a visa, how do i start to apply for a visa via an EOI without a degree? Is an EOI route to a visa better than a 457 sponsorship? Sorry for all the questions its just i am getting conflicting advice and read so much information from the immi.gov.au website i've confused myself and don't know where to start... Hope you can offer me some advice and information from experience? Look forward to hearing from you... Louise.

Hi Louise, First of all, have you identified an occupation on the CSOL for your actual occupation?
Louisej323
Ok. So that's the consolidated skills occupation list...and this occupation choice will work for both a 457 visa and an EOI skill select visa? Once I have identified my occupation do I need to get a relevant skills assessment, again for either visa?
CaptainC
If the occupation is on the CSOL for a particular state then you could go for a state sponsored visa. Presumably this choice to move back to Australia would be a permanent move? If it is, then a 457 may be unsuitable as it's a temporary visa. You will certainly need a skills assessment for a permanent visa, but not 100% sure if you would need one for a temp visa. It is required for some occupations, but not (I believe) all. CaptainC
FYI, from your original post, you don't need a degree, so don't worry about that.

Do I need qualifications for a sponsorship visa or does work experience and proof i can do the job account for more? It will depend on what occupation is nominated, however, for many occupations, employment experience can be used in lieu of formal qualifications for a subclass 457 visa. Also has anyone ever applied for a 457 sponsorship visa by themselves and found their own employer rather than through a migration agent? In most cases a Migration Agent will not find you a sponsor/employer. You should be cautious with anyone asking for money and promising to find you a sponsor/employer for a subclass 457 visa. Also how do I gain a skills assesment for my career? Again, this will depend on the occupation, however, if it is a professional or associate professional occupation which is assessed by Vetassess, you will need formal qualifications. I have seen some of you have gone down the EOI route to a visa, how do i start to apply for a visa via an EOI without a degree? Is an EOI route to a visa better than a 457 sponsorship? In most cases an EOI is submitted for a skilled or state sponsored visa. In this case a skills assessment is required.
ali
Hi Louise, do be mindful that the 457 is a temporary visa - whilst some go on to then apply for and gain permanent residency this is not a guaranteed pathway
MaggieMay24
From your posts, it looks like you're planning to lodge an EOI in order to find an employer? Although the system is designed to allow this to work, in reality it never happens. I mean never. No employer is going to go trolling through Skill Select to find potential candidates for their employees. You'll need to look for a job the old-fashioned way - online job boards (Seek is the biggest one here), LinkedIn, etc. and then hope the employer is eligible to and willing to sponsor you for a visa. It is a difficult path, but people do it successfully. Just be ready to be patient and persistent.
CaptainC
Just as an additional side note. Have you been in touch with the big broadcasters such as ABC or Seven network in aus? 20 years experience with the BBC has got to count for something. Have you been in touch with the big broadcasters such as ABC or Seven network in aus? 20 years experience with the BBC has got to count for something. I have but they don't sponsorship I would have to have my own working visa rights. I have though had offers of freelance work for the broadcasters and Sky racing in brisbane. My only problem with the EOI route for state sponsorship and EOI skilled visa is that the I'm not sure my profession is on the Queensland wanted skills list. So again it keeps leading me back to finding my own sponsor for a specific position.

How long approx does a EOI skilled visa take to be granted and would I need a degree for that or just a skills assessment? Again it all depends on your occupation. If you tell us the occupation name or code from the SOL or CSOL we might be able to help. Without the info it's impossible.
srg73
20 years experience with the BBC has got to count for something. Being left wing, commonly on strike and as you mention would fit perfectly with ABC...maybe Q&A? Sorry could not resist and best of luck to the OP. How long approx does a EOI skilled visa take to be granted and would I need a degree for that or just a skills assessment? EOI is just part of the application process, it is not an "EOI skilled visa" and whether you go for state sponsorship or not, the EOI is the first step in the process. Have you identified a specific occupation on the CSOL and if so could you share the name and code with us? It would make it a lot easier for people to comment on what is and isn't required or whether sponsorship likely if we knew what occupation code you are thinking of. Louisej323
Ok, I'll have a look tonight at the SOL and COL and get back to you with an occupation cap which fits my profession, I know there are quite a few different Media occupations on there and I have experience in a number of them so I'll have to decide which fits my experience and skills best. I'm guessing that once I know which occupation I fit into it will tell me what skills assessment I need, what qualifications are required and whether it's best for me to apply for a skilled or sponsored visa...? Unfortunately there is not any occupations that match mine on the SOL so I guess a skilled visa is out of the question. There is however a few different occupation titles that I may fit into on the CSOL. I will list them below. The reason i could not be more specifc is I could not find the occupation title descriptions, therefore I was not sure which fitted with my skills/experience the best. Does anyone know how I find the decsription of each of the following occupations so I can choose which one I can apply under? Here are the occupations I feel match my occupation... Film, Television, Radio and Stage Directors nec 212399 VETASSESS Television Equipment Operator 399517 TRA Stage Manager 212316 VETASSESS Camera Operator 399517 TRA Multi Media Specialist 261211 ACS Media Producer 212112 VETASSESS Project Administrator 511112 VETASSESS Program Director 212315 VETASSESS Sorry I couldn't be more specific, until I know exactly what each occupation description and requirements are i can't decide which is the one to go for. Hope you can help. Louise

Louisej323
I have been on the anzco website (thanks CaptainC) and found various occupations that fit my job description, skills and experience for a General Skilled Visa 189. The occupations are all on the CSOL, however they only have ticks next to either South Australia, Western Australia or Northern Territory (mostly SA) and the ticks for SA are coloured yellow, which i think means they are on the supplementary skilled list with the additional requirement being competent English. The green ticks next to WA and NT i think imply 'Applications Open High Availability'. The occupations I have identified I would be suitable for are... Arts Administrator or Manager 139911 - Vetassess - Skill Level 1 - South Australia (Green tick - high availability) Television Equipment Operator 399517 - TRA - Skill level 3 - South Australia (yellow tick, Supplementary skill requirement) Program or Project Administrator 511112 - VETASSESS - Skill level 2 - South Australia (yellow tick, Supplementary skill requirement) and Western Australia (Green tick - high availability) Film, Television, Radio and Stage Directors nec 212399 - VETASSESS - Skill level 1 - South Australia (yellow tick, Supplementary skill requirement) and Northern Territory (Green tick - high availability) I did find my actual job description 'Production Assistant (Film, Television, Radio or Stage) 599912' however this occupation was not on either skill list  If I apply for a GSM 189 Visa in SA can I then not work in Queensland with that visa? I'm still a little confused and of course wanting to be Gold Coast, Queensland based so not sure what to do from here...any advice anyone?
Louisej323
Sorry, my mistake... GSM 189 is not eligible for those occupations I have listed above it is Visa Subclass 190 or 489...see I told you I was confused!!

You need to look at the conditions of each individual state list to see if you are eligible for sponsorship.
