They used to be barred over European airspace I think due to their poor safety record. I would never fly Garuda due to their poor early reputation, but not sure it is deserved now - Haven't heard anything poor about them recently

yes husband told me that but apparently have upped their game and fleet?

Too good to not consider, saves at least $1400 on next one up....dates would have to be rehashed, originally wanted to come back after NY and husband not sure about London as will mean hotel and then either car hire or train. Cheap travelodge rooms available though. Anyone any experience with airport hotels in Gatwick?

They are a brilliant airline nowadays - however I would be wary about booking flights to UK with them just yet.

I am assuming this is the direct flight, Jakarta to London with no stops? It isn't yet a live route.

* Was meant to launch last November and was delayed (runway at Jakarta needed improvements due to weight of new plane when full of fuel).

* It was then supposed to launch in May, they even sold tickets for this launch - and once again it was delayed (they became a member of SKYTEAM Alliance, and pressure was put on them from within the alliance to delay).

* Its now due to launch again in September. We will wait and see if it happens of if the alliance puts more pressure on them to pull out (other alliance airlines have a problem with this route and the impact it will have on them). My concern, is that if the route is cancelled, you end up on a flight to Amsterdam and then onto London, and it looks like a long flight. Or you could end up going via Abu Dhabi which is a better route, but still not direct.

I flew with Garuda a number of times over the previous few years and would happily fly them again. Their ground staff at Jakarta are brilliant, even managing to get me on an earlier flight than I had booked and personally escorting me through security and to the gate.

Funny enough in Indo domestic garuda is the premiere airline and I always fly with them interconnecting, the service is great though Jakarta airport is not the finest piece of work. Less time there the better.. International garudas reputation has only been climbing. Would fly them again.

  • 3 weeks later...

We flew back to the Netherlands with them may-2014 (3 months ago). They were fine. Great price. Only downside was that we had an extra stop at Abu Dhabi which we didn't see coming. It didn't really matter for the total flight duration, which was still good, but the misses hates landing and taking off :)

Premier Inn North Terminal A23 Airport Way. 10 mins walk to the terminal. Vg shuttle service to South terminal and it's free.
