What is happening?

I am presuming it is state wide but everywhere seems to be cutting staff at the moment.

In Cairns, both my sons are on reduced hours, one has gone from 50 hours a week to 4 hours a week (thankfully he has always kept a second job going) and the other son is suppose to get 38 hours a week minimum as a full time apprentice and has been getting less than 20. Restaurants, shops etc all over seem to be closing down. The DFO in Cairns is terrible, I would say 80% of the shops have now all closed down.

I read the below today and think we could all be in for a bumpy ride.

Last week, news broke that the number of people on benefits reached a 15-year-high with 840,000 people receiving the Newstart or Youth Allowance, up 44,000 from the previous year. It was swiftly followed by the announcement that Qantas will sack 5000 full-time workers and comes following thousands more job cuts as Ford, Toyota and Holden close their doors in Australia.

Retailers here have been ripping people off for years and now with internet shopping, etc its all coming back to bite them on the bum! No more than they deserve. Here in Perth, eating out is way over the top expensive so a lot of people wont pay the prices! The car companies are not closing for a couple of years, yes it will be loads of jobs but they have announced it now, companies which supply parts should be trying to diversify now instead of waiting on Holden etc closing their doors and then crying that they have lost all their business.

That sounds really bad up there! Can't say personally I've noticed any hard times in inner Brissie. Plenty of new coffee shops and restaurants opening all the time. Jamie Oliver is opening his largest restaurant in oz here. I don't know anyone out of work.

We are in Cairns and my son often does not even get a reply to applications ( he used to work in a bank and has done sales ). He has applied for everything including shops, restaurants, cleaning but nothing. He has friends in Cairns who plan to move elsewhere as they have nothing either.

I used to work as a Health Visitor but decided to work as as a support worker but not getting anywhere and had to take a English and Maths test before one interview.

My husband is a teacher and always in demand for contracts so that is a relief.

I envisage my son will go back to Cornwall where he always had work as he has been here since October and very down and missing life there.

Sorry to hear that hun. The worst thing is that it's our quiet season at the moment so that doesn't help anyone find a job. How old is your son and how long have you been in Cairns?

From what I saw on my very brief visit to.Cairns few years back the hospitality industry is heavily dependent on tourism? Therefore if this drops then naturally businesses will suffer? I dont think its nationwide but industry specific. Like Qantas links to tourism to .. I think if you do the number crunching on the tourism industry there lies your answer. Are the backpackers still around? Maybe they are heading back to Europe for the summer..

Not noticed any difference in Perth yet. Read in the paper this morning that job adverts and business confidence are both up last month. There is always a bit of a lull before and after Christmas. I see someone else from Perth complaining about the price of eating out. Might be expensive, hard to tell relatively, but it doesn't seem to be affecting too many. When we go out for a meal most places seem to be doing pretty well, lot of people out and about and enjoying themselves. Tourists are still here I guess so that helps.

Husband and I came out in October 2012 and moved to Cairns in June 2013. The oldest son is now a doctor in Alice Springs(he came out in August 2013). We always knew he would come to Australia and he is the reason we decided to come before our visas expired. The younger one who is 21 didnt want to come but didnt want to stay in the UK without his family. In retrospect we shouldnt have come as were happy in Cornwall and lost so much money on the exchange rate.My mum was broken hearted and died just after Christmas, she was ill for a long time and just gave up I think when the boys finally left.

The tourists are here in numbers. I passed by Alfreds in Guildford for a burger and line was full of foreigners not just Asians but Sth Americans and Europeans. Add this there were lots of planes flying low just about to land.. may be different in.Cairns at this time?

Always wondered who went to Guildford.

That doesn't sound good. Thing is always that knock on effect too, once a few big firms start closing, the rumour mill goes into overdrive, people start worrying and stop spending and like has been noted in Cairns the smaller shops and restaurants go out of business and so on...

Whats the housing market like in Cairns? That's normally a good indicator of what's happening.

Seems quite buoyant here in Perth, so hopefully nothing too bad round the corner just yet.

South Americans in Guildford? Wonder how that was known.Anyway Perth has long felt the excessive costs in most things. Doesn't mean to say the place is a morgue, it means those partaking in the big bucks may well spend up big. There are more working in the city on big bucks as well, not just FIFO or cashed up tradies . Perth has certainly become a divided city in those with the capacity to pay the prices and those that don't.

Most tourists, and I've known quite a few over the years comment on how expensive Perth is. Even professionals we go out with are price conscious. This was not the case several years back.

Australia need to drop their prices, until they do people will shop abroad and have stuff posted here. The internet being more popular than ever makes doing this easy and the end results is stores here will suffer.

True but a catch 22 situation. While I can get cheaper from USA or Asia I will tend not to buy local unless necessary. The greed pushed folk in a certain direction that will be difficult to recapture.

Sounded and looked Chilean ..or somewhere in that area..Im guessing they may be tourists, possibility of been migrant residents here, seemed quite middle class. It definitely felt touristy rather than local patronage.

There is actually a significant community of South Americans in Perth.

Depends what you mean by significant. I would say they have a presence but hardly significant. Seem to see much the same faces at the occasional South American functions go to. Although the Colombian community has grown between census, others only moderately so.

Stores are suffering everywhere. People have taken to internet shopping in droves, a lot of them not even because of price but convenience. It's a shame really, another chance to get out and socialise disappearing.

If the dollar keeps falling buying stuff from abroad should get more expensive, I buy quite a bit of sports gear from wiggle in the UK and their prices have increased quite a lot since the dollar has dropped.
