Well i've been there 3 times, and all the aussies i've met so far have been nothing but helpful, friendly, and kind hearted. My best friends family and friends couldn't be more accommodating, and while some are 'rough around the edges' they have all had hearts of gold and been real salt of the earth people. I'm sure people are similar around the world, generalising is pointless.

I heard grumblings some time ago from a forumite who was leaving Australia for the UK because of how much they disliked Australians. Yesterday, I heard more feedback (Australians are "rough, tough, backwards") and today another forumite agreed.

Why is there this shared opinion of Australian people? IS this the general case? ARE most Australians you meet really "rough, tough and backwards"? If so, how and why are so many people choosing to live in this country with all these people? Are they just ignoring the general population or living in ignorant bliss? Or are people judging unfairly?

For those in Australia already, please share your thoughts honestly about this please. It's something I haven't had to give much thought to, but it seems to be developing into a common thread between quite a few forumites now.

So, if I understand your post correctly, you spoke to three people who don't like Australians, one of whom failed to settle, blames everyone but his/her's own attitude, and has gone home?

Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and thoughts. Rather than hear or read isolated reports, I wanted to hear from a few people who had been there, done it, and lived an integrated life with those who live down under.

What a racist thread !

It is ridiculous to brand a whole nation in this way.

It is no different to characterising black people or asians and should be called out for what it is.

The thread isn't racist at all. You might think that those who shared these opinions were racist, but that's something else entirely from me asking WHY these kinds of opinions are formed in the first place.

WHY these kinds of opinions are formed in the first place.

Because some people want to move half way round the world and still have everything the same as it was back home.

That's where the Aussie Fit in or F off mentality comes from unlike most of your popular European tourist destinations which will bend over backwards to be a "little Britain" rather than encourage visitors to embrace their culture and cuisine for the two weeks they are on holiday.

I can understand where they're coming from completely. If THAT makes them 'rough and backwards' then more power to them.

I think the short answer to this is

A) don't generalise

B) there are a££holes everywhere - no matter what country you're in. The trick is to find like-minded people.

C) Stiff upper lips get in the way of making friendships. Be open and friendly, don't judge and see how far it takes you.

D) Yobs/ Chavs/ Bogans exist in every society. You don't have to socialise with these people if you don't want to.

Might depend on where you come from too. The place I grew up in could have been classed as rough and backward I guess, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I haven't found Australians to be any different from people from the UK and anywhere else really. You get good and bad, people you like, people you don't like so much but others do, people who might not like you very much.

It's just a matter of finding the right mix of friends with the same interests and all's well.

If you're going to make wild accusations, you should at least get your terms right. Nowhere in my question did race come into the picture at all. If anything, your concerns were around xenophobia, which is the "intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries".

I think overall though that your fears raised in this thread say a lot more about you and your issues than they do about me or my original question.

To add to this I've never felt intimidated by Australians they are direct, yes, but not confronting in my opinion. On the contrary I've met more rough and tough people in the UK.

I love Aussies the one's I've been fortunate to work with have been well educated and very easy to get along with.

It's nothing to do with money. Top of my list of "most appalling Australians" would be Rupert Murdoch and Clive Palmer - both billionaires. Also Paul Hogan is one I can't stand. He found fame and fortune playing the stereotypical, salt of earth, Aussie bloke. Then he deserts his wife and Australia and runs off with his young co-star to live the Hollywood lifestyle. Now he's nearly broke, she's dumped him and he's back in Oz doing one-man shows trying to make a quid. Got no sympathy for him.

You would probably dislike those same individuals for the same reasons regardless of their nationality.

I think Aussies feel the same way about these guys. I might add Tony Abbott to that list. He's wormed his way into being Prime Minister now out to lose everyone their jobs through total ****wittery.

Yeah, wish he had stayed with the Jesuits. But isn't he technically a Brit, being London born?
