Melbourne beautiful City... Anyone moving there?

Adelaide - (just been) seemed so small after Melbourne, but suppose to have better food? (and I thought Melbourne had a good food rep - seem to have more choice!)

What utter nonsense. Whoever told you that Adelaide has better food must not have been to Melbourne, or not know food at all. The food here in Melbourne is absolutely amazing (and when I say Melbourne, I mean the city & inner suburbs). There is an endless choice of 'cheap' eats or fancy dining, with restaurants by some of the worlds top chefs. A lot of innovative food stuff here.

I agree! :) As stated - but apparently Adelaide is famous for the food? (I tried to write it that, from my POV, Melbourne had the same variety - but more choice for all!)

Now where are cheap eats you go to? Heard of a pizza place near melbourne central - locals only - gorgeous and cheap food!

Asian Beer cafe is a great place - $4 pizza.

Gurkhas (the one in the CBD on Flinders street) is the best Nepalese we've had out of Nepal! (Order the goat curry - we both do now)

Sure there are others - just can't think of them at the moment (or closed)

All the Aussie Cities I've visited have had a good choice of food. Surprisingly the best restaurants I've been to have been in Townsville. They are all on the same street too. We get to try a lot of different places when we are away with work, as they are paying. Pity I never get to come to Perth on an expenses paid trip as there are a lot of places I would love to try here but refuse to pay what seems an extortionate price. We've found a lot of good value places in Perth though too, with great food. I think a lot of places you pay for the name of the chef before you walk through the door.

Yeah there are a few 'celebrity chef' places that are expensive and don't have good reviews on urbanspoon, so we have avoided them. Don't just fall for the name behind the restaurant always seek out the reviews of others.

When I said cheap eats, I intentionally put quotes around the word cheap, as it's all relative. Some of our favorite 'cheaper' places include:

- Bunga Raya North Melbourne (Malaysian)

- China Red (not to be confused with China Bar) in CBD

- Dahon Tea Lounge South Melbourne (Filipino)

- The Merrywell - Downstairs (Crown Casino) One of the better 'American ' style burger & fries. (has been a little hit & miss lately though)

- Garamerica South Melbourne (Indonesian)

- Nama Nama - Japanese Housemade Udon

When we were there we had a walk up Lygon Street and went in an Italian that looked fairly authentic. The weather was good enough to sit outside, it wasn't expensive and it was really good. Nice atmosphere, the dapper Italian waiters leaning on the doorway, eyeing up the passing talent made my wife smile. Really nice evening.

Thought one of the things that lets Melbourne down is the beaches. We went to St Kilda on Sunday as my missus wanted to check out the markets. I hate shopping and markets so me and the youngster planned a bit of time on the beach whilst the missus browsed. I suppose we are spoiled by Perths beaches but I thought it was pretty average. Loved the pubs and cafes around there though.

Now in southbank - before in the CBD, we like the vouchers for places to go.

Anything over $50 for two people feels too expensive (and I appreciate that's rarely ever possible!)

Heard it's worth trying the Realto towers restaurant at $400 each (but cannot bring myself to that!)

Did look into the Eureka restaurant - $100 for tasting sounds nice for a treat (visitors?)

Otherwise, we just like the vineyards! :)

So to the OP - plenty of good grub, sorry tucker, to get into ;)

PS the free BBQ on the river or lake work well! :)

Yeah, can't really compare Melbourne beaches to Perth as they sit on on the bay. I think the further down the peninsula you go, they get much better. Although, Brighton has one of the best dog beaches I've ever seen. A completely fenced in area (apart from the water) and during summer there are hundreds of dogs there.

$50 is too easy to spend. Just lunch for 1 can cost you $15-20. Without drinks.

Vue de Monde is on our list, and will probably go there for the wifes birthday. They actually have a bar next door called Lui Bar, which has fantastic view of the city and a great place to take out of town guest to give them a taste of the high life without spending $400. Drink are a little pricey, but cheaper than paying to go up Eureka SkyDeck.

There is something about the river that fascinates me. Every time I am on a bridge crossing over, or walking down southbank, I get captivated by the city and remember why I fell in love with Melbourne.

It was nice walking by the river but I though it looks a bit brown and dirty, again spoilt I suppose by Perths rivers. They've certainly made the most of it though and while Perth has a great River frontage it is mostly surrounded on both sides by parks. They could do an awful lot more with it.

We went to a bar next to the river and I was queuing up behind a guy who asked for the Asahi. Though I would give it a shot till I heard the price. Ended up with a pint of VB. Nice venue though.

If you win the lottery and want to get adventurous with your beer tasting, then head to Cookie in the CBD. They have a huge beer menu with a lot of exotic beers:

Can even get your VB :)

That section is one of my favorite to ride along. Its just stunning as you approach the city, with all the sports venues across the river.

If you are new to Melbourne and love to ride, there are some really great bike paths along creeks and rivers. There is also a good network of on-road bike lanes to help get around the city without a car.

Melbourne is obsessed with AFL. Before you get here pick a team and familiarize yourself with the game and its history. Otherwise you will feel like a leper, as most conversations in the tea room revolve around AFL. You will also be expected to participate in the yearly footy tipping comp - if you don't you will be considered a stuck-up pom who isn't trying to fit in.

We moved over to Adelaide in June 2012 on partner visa to spend a bit of time with the OH's family. We always planned to move onto Melbourne soon after as we'd prefer to be in a bigger city (we're city folk I guess) - we've got a rental here in Adelaide at the moment and have toyed with the idea of staying put but we had a talk last night and are still going to pack up and move, probably just after Christmas. If we don't do it now then we probably never will.

Not sure exactly where we'll head yet but want to be as close to the CBD as possible - we have a friend who owns a rental in Prahran and if we stick to our planned timing then it looks like it may be available for us by the time we look to move which would save us a huuuge amount of hassle in sorting out a rental from interstate and would give us a base to look for work.

By choice I think we'd probably like to live in Fitzroy, Brunswick East or possibly Carlton but if we have an easy rental option for our initial arrival then we can't really turn that down. Plus, Prahran's still pretty nice, if not a little posh.

Personally I love the grungy, arty, busy feel of Melbourne - it feels a bit more 'real' to me somehow. Perhaps I'm just used to things being a little bit damp and mouldy back in the UK and am looking for some home comforts . I'm a bit like my Dad - I've always felt a bit trapped in the suburbs and I prefer an environment where there's a lot of people around me. I remember when we were looking to move house when I was little that my Dad wouldn't even look at anything in a cul-de-sac or close. Now I've done it myself I can see why - things can get a bit stale, seeing the same 5 or 6 people over and over again. A bit like the Truman show. Mowing your lawn. Putting the bins out. Washing the car. Same day each week. Week in week out. Year after year. Until you die. Or fall over and break a hip and have to get someone called Ted in to do it all for you. Sure, in the city you can be woken up at 5am by a pack of drunk students working their way home across your front lawn, but it keeps things unpredictable and occasionally I like to be reminded that there's something else out there...

Sorry, I've gone off on a tangent now. Melbourne's great. Move there.

Where are you going to be working, inner or outer Melbourne? The Life in Victoria forum has a lot of members who have arrived recently and there are a few meet ups being arranged, well worth joining up there is a link at the foot of this forum.

The beaches are better if people head further down Beach Road and once you get to Mordialloc to Frankston there are good beaches although they are bay beaches so calmer than the ocean beaches. Ocean beaches are more dangerous and really need to be experienced swimmers for them. Gunnamatta is a particularly dangerous beach. If it looks nice it most probably isn't keep between the flags.

Living inner city, my main advice would be always be aware of your surroundings. If you go out late at night, try and be with a friend. Don't walk home on your own drunk at 2 in the morning. I would say overall Melbourne is relatively safe compared to some other big cities, just don't be complacent with your own safety.
