Guest LiamandNaomi
Hi we came over to Oz at the beginning of may and are still currently looking for work. My boyfriend is a gas engineer and would like to get onto the pipe lines. We have found that its more a case of who you know not what you know. If anyone could please give us some advise on mining or know of anyone in the trade that might be able to help us? My email address is l1ams@hotmail.com Many thanks Naomi
Guest Rockhopper
Hi Liam and Naomi, I'm in the same boat. I found this Youtube video, it might help. Best regards, Aidan.
Joebloggs
It's definitely more about who you know rather than what you know, and in fairness that guy in the video never mentioned that most of these companies are looking for people with PR or at least with a trade that is worth their while sponsoring. VERYSTORMY
It's not who you know. It very much is what you know. Firstly, all companies that sponsor only do it because they can't find someone to fill a job. Your boyfriend would in effect be looking for a trainee role as he doesn't have heavy pipe experience. People assume that the term skills shortage form mining jobs means the mines need everybody, but the reality is that they are short of very particular skills. These are usually mine specific such as geologists, engineers, mine survey and the like or some of the roles that require a person to have been working in a mine for a long time such as jumbo operators who normally have at least 10 years experience. There is no shortage of people who just want to get into mining.
Truchazul
I would take a look at using a recruitment agency and as you are already over there this should be easier for interviews, more and more companies are using agencies to wittle down candidates in the chance they find the right people. I have managed to do this from the UK and am hoping to be over in Perth very soon, good luck I am sure something will materialize soon

VERYSTORMY
nah they are USELESS!! The career section is by far the best job site for the industry. Way better than seek where most of the jobs don't exist. Yes you have to pay about $20 a month, but anyone who isn't willing to hand that over isn't serious about getting into the industry

daylpool10
There is a recruitment agency who specialise in engineering (mainly welders though) They have helped me out + are very helpful. If you call up and ask for a guy called Danny - he will get you in for an interview and go from there. newjez
The easiest way to get into the mining industry is to a metal detector and a shovel and drive into the middle of no where. I do know people who make a good living doing this!
