Music in Australia

Ah, my OH would be much better at this one than I am as she's the Aussie amongst us but have got into a fair bit of Aussie stuff since we've been together.

I'm not too hot on the punk side of things but I reckon it's worth giving the following a try. Some are becoming quite well known on the international scene nowadays so you might already be aware...

Cloud Control

The Jezebels

Machine Translation

Dappled Cities

Angus and Julia Stone

Lisa Mitchell

Sia

Holly Throsby

Sarah Blasko

Midnight Juggernauts

Paul Dempsey

I Heart Hiroshima

The Grates

The Panics

The Temper Trap

Interestingly, although we're in the UK we have managed to see all but four of the above live in the past three years. I think I'm going to miss the music scene here in Brighton.

Also, it's well worth keeping an eye on the following:

Happy hunting!

Jimmy Barnes aka the screamer is compulsory listening in Oz

He's properly referred to as 'Barnesy' - also part of one of the most amazing pub-rock bands ever, 'Cold Chisel' - simply referred to as Chisel.

BTW hubby recently discovered Chisel, and greatly admires their guitar work :)

This is a club near me in Surry Hills specialising in jazz, funk, roots, world music. I went on 24th April, don't really like jazz but they had an orchestra squeezed onto the stage, at least sixteen of them, maybe more at the back, and I really enjoyed it.

Im really into my music! Mainly unknown bands such as 'the maine' I was wondering if there are any bands in australia you could recommend which are punk/rock/pop/acoustic! ahaha :) thanks

One artist I have loved for many years is a bloke called Wally De Backer - he makes recordings with his mates in a shed at his parents place at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. The music is released under the name "Gotye". He makes brilliant quirky heartfelt music. I loved a song he released called "Hearts A Mess" about ten years ago. But recently through a series of lucky breaks a top American music executive heard a song he made called "Somebody I Used To Know" and released it in America. .It went to number one on the American Billboard - only the 5th Oz artist to achieve this. Guess he will be moving out of his folks place now.
