  1. I am within walking distance to our HSG so toddle up there a couple of times a week. They are very close to Woolies and Coles but seem to do very well as it's busy every time I go. I think they may be moving to the new "Devonport Living City" when it is completed. I hope the Living City doesn't prove to be a white elephant as it is costing a fortune to build. http://www.devonport.tas.gov.au/Council/Our-City/Living-City
  2. Skani, Hill Street Grocer has recently opened a store in Devonport. Some lovely produce to be had there - especially the cheese selection.
  3. Being antisocial and a bit of a hermit I didn't join any clubs when we first migrated. I got to know lots other mums at a mother and baby play group after my babies were born. Since then through voluntary work I've met quite a few people with shared interests especially through volunteering at various animal rescue shelters.
  4. We live on the NW coast and are very happy here. Retired after living in Sydney for well over 20 years. Hobart is a really nice small city. Do you have a job to go to. If so you are set up otherwise life will be difficult. We would have loved to move here years ago but jobs were scarce so waited until retirement age. As Starlight has said if you love to shop, Tassie isn't as exciting as the mainland cities. I hate shopping so I couldn't care less about that. The only things cheaper here are houses. Skani, a member here who lives in Hobart will be able to let you know areas to avoid. As far as dog walking parks, I don't know about Hobart but we have some great places here where our dog can have runs off the lead including a lovely dog exercise beach a walk from our house.
  5. Why were no fire alarms or sprinklers fitted when the building was updated? Awful tragedy for those poor souls living there.
  6. We had thick fog this morning - almost felt like fine drizzle but it's gone now.
  7. I agree. One of my sons is overseas - haven't seen him for 1.5 years the other in Sydney. They have their lives and I have mine. Do whatever is best for you.
  8. Married an Aussie in Scotland in 1976 and lived happily in the UK until we both fancied a change and a bit of an adventure so came here in 1981 and still enjoying ourselves.
  9. Good luck with your return to the UK Gareth! Hope all goes well for you.
  10. It was a really cold start to the day here. Went for a walk wrapped up in coat, scarf and gloves crunching over the frosty ground. Nice and sunny as it has been for the past couple of weeks. No wind either.
  11. If all this is true about Corbyn, I don't know how he can sleep at night. Reminds of the grinning Tony Blair shaking hands with Gaddafi.
  12. Frosty morning here in Devonport but clear blue sky. Going to reach 16C this afternoon.
  13. Yes it will get colder as this is just the start of winter. I too used to look at people rugged up when I thought it wasn't THAT cold. In Sydney I only ever wore a raincoat. Even after 30 years I never found it cold enough to rug up - not in Sydney anyway - did when going to the Blue Mountains in winter.
  14. I saw something about it the Daily Mail so it could be fake news.
  15. Oops! I too didn't read first post properly. OP should be comfortable on a salary of $110,000.
  16. I doubt very much if $110 will get you anything (even sharing) in the city centre. It might get you a rental share as themaccas said somewhere like Bondi but don't expect anything flash at all. Sydney is very expensive!!
  17. Very frosty first thing but frost was gone by 9:30am. Cloudless sky and 10C just now at 10:45 supposed to reach 13C.
  18. .......... and that Norwegian nutjob who murdered 77 people in 2011. He wasn't a terrorist either - he was insane.
  19. Plockton a lovely village in Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. Went there for a holiday with Mum the summer before she died.
  20. My husband has noticed far more health and safety on the building sites here compared to Sydney. Much better scaffolding etc. He worked on some horrors in Sydney. The unions were a bit slack too. Probably received backhanders from the developers/builders.
  21. I remember taking our labrador into pubs and she used to travel from Liverpool down to London on the train with me when I visited my mother in law. There are a few pubs in Sydney where dogs are allowed. We used to take ours when we went to The Henson in Marrickville. http://eatdrinkplay.com/sydney/10-best-sydney-dog-friendly-pubs/
  22. Sounds like a woman to me. Could be a man with a feminine voice but I doubt it.
  23. Be interested to hear what a few of you think of this article. http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/manchester-attack-salman-abedi-salafi-jihadism-wahhabism-isis-al-qaeda-islam-muslim-suicide-bombing-a7754301.html
