One of my first thoughts was "I need to buy an umbrella!". Genuinely it was a mixed feeling. We would happily have stayed in Australia if returning to the UK wasn't an option, and we were so upset leaving friends and family there (my wife is Australian). There was still a raw feeling of departure when we landed in Glasgow. Gradually, over the next few days when the sun shone a bit and the lush, beautiful, green landscape appeared out of the jet lag haze, the butterflies in the belly were hard to contain. It is a very lucky (and maybes also a bit unlucky) situation to be in, having two places that you feel at home. I have to say, though, Glasgow is definitely No 1 Home.

Sold house in Oz and wondering about Tax in the UK.

I know this topic is a month old, but we are in the process of using Conroy. They use Anglo Pacific in the UK. Conroy team were in and out of our three bed house, packing a full 20ft container in around five hours. Very reasonably priced and we got a good feeling. We are tracking the ship which is in Singapore now, so well on target for their 9 week delivery date. We used that combo (Anglo Pacific/Conroy) in the opposite direction 4 years ago. Very pleased both ends. We were quoted by Chess and Pickfords several weeks ago. Chess were expensive, and Pickfords came in around the same as Conroy. Good luck.

Hi team. We have just moved back to Scotland from Australia and sold our house (exchanged contracts) about three hours before we got on the plane!! What a relief that was. It means that we are still waiting to settle (get our money). This is due before the end of the month. I'd like to understand if we are due to pay Capital Gains Tax in the UK on the property we just sold in Oz. We were residents of Australia, not the UK, when we signed the contract. We are now UK residents and will be when the money comes into our account in Australia. So I'm unsure what HMRC will expect in terms of CGT. Appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Tracy. Good to see someone carrying this list on. I was granted the 100 visa, so delighted not to have to wait the extra period. We have now applied for a mortgage and have been told by the broker that it wouldn't have mattered if I was on a 100, or a 309, or even the 457 that I'm on at the moment. Commonwealth Bank are happy as long as we've got the 20% deposit and a salary coming in on a permanent contract. But the 100 was the icing on the cake ?

As some may know, we are already in Canberra on my 457 visa, but I got my Depart for Grant letter yesterday. So that is seven months, three weeks and four days. They didn't say whether I've got the 100 though. I'll ask that when I reply with my date for re-entry. It'll probably be January before I get to New Zealand though.

Folks I've not been on the forum for a while, but it's good to see the amount of grants coming through. Congratulations to all you new visa holders!! My update is that a company who were interested in me have offered me a position which I accepted, then they went for a 457 visa through an on-hire agency. That visa was granted yesterday and we have booked our flights for 24th October. I have agreed to leave the country when I am due to have my 309/100 granted, which I hope is around the middle of January. I will work for the agency, on hire to my intended employer until I get the 309/100. So it is all systems go now :err:

Hi, I've already got a 309/100 application ongoing from March this year, offshore. So that limits me a fair bit. The company have suggested that I work for an 'on-hire' company who will sponsor me for my 457, and they hire me out to the company I will ultimately work for when my partner visa comes through. Do you know if that is a common arrangement, and should I be worried at all? Cheers

The company have taken some advice and are now looking at a 457 on hire labour agreement. Where a third party company would employ me until my 309/100 visa comes through. Does anyone have any experience of the 'on hire' arrangements?

We didn't do any separate personal statements. They were done as part of the application form itself.

That is out on a limb. And I really hope it works out for you. Are you going on an visitor visa if the PMV is not complete? I also have VF and applied a few weeks after you. Have you had any indication from the CO that you could get a grant by then? I'm discussing a job at the moment and any indication would be a good guide for me.

I definitely found it liberating to do that and I was able to frame it as a really long notice or handover period. If your boss is going to be like mine and take it as an opportunity to develop someone else while you are still there, then that is better for them than advertising the position, going through loads of CVs and interviews so it might be appealing to them. What do you do?

I have been completely up front with mine as there was an opportunity of a transfer, but that didn't come off. I now need to be wary of being forced into Gardening leave. If I get a job with a rival in Sydney then I could be put out to grass and not have an income after my notice period. Tricky one where I need to tell future employers in Sydney to keep schtum.

Do you mean that there is someone at the agency that is your contact there? I doubt if you have an Immi CO without even having lodged your application.

I'm sure it's when your forms go into immi. If you have a CO, then does that mean your agent has submitted? it was actually Pookie who has done the spreadsheet so I can't take any credit I'm afraid.

I have to apologise for being a bit of a bloke :cool: I asked my wife and I made some generalisations. It was in fact 4 weeks until we got his citizenship and we didn't need our Aussie mate to co sign that one. She doesn't know what form it was but we got our police friend to co sign. It was the Passport pictures that we had to get our Aussie friend to sign. in my defence, we sent the form in and then went to Sydney for December so it seemed like a few days :laugh:

Our situation was pretty easy. My wife is Assie and I am British so our son now has two passports based on both of our nationalities. I'm not sure how my wife did it but she called the Embassy in London, send some original documents away and he got his Aussie citizenship in a matter of days. We had to get an Aussie friend in the UK to act as a reference too. Be careful though. After your child is an Aussie citizen, they need an Australian passport to enter the country. That requires a visit to the Embassy in London.

We have lived together for four years and been married for two years. Our son is one in September. That fulfills the criteria that Nemesis describes but I'm not sure if we will get it. I hope it's a straight black or white decision that our CO makes and we too go directly to PR.

That is fantastic ADGT. You have the same CO as me, I think. She didn't sign her email with a surname. What are your circumstances that led to you going directly to PR?
