  1. I thought polygamy was illegal here? This chap is considering taking a second wife. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/probing-polygamy/story-e6frg8go-1111116736076
  2. Those grand mufti or whatever they're called and other preachers don't seem to be helping young Muslims here with decent/enlightened speeches in the mosques. Either that or nobody is listening to them.
  3. You could take a look at this: http://www.sunshinecoastholidayparks.com.au/ As Ramot said, it's the busiest time of year - school summer holidays here so everything is booked up quickly and the prices rise accordingly too.
  4. It's the same when people exaggerate about how cold it gets in Tasmania. It's milder here in the winter than many a mainland town e.g. Canberra and not nearly so hot in the summer. Lovely long, warm summers here.
  5. I went when we lived there. If I'm ever in Perth again, I'll have another look.
  6. That is true for an awful lot of people PB no doubt about it - you just need to read the Moving Back To The UK thread to see that those things are very important to many of them. I admit to being a Philistine. Going to museums and art galleries and even the theatre doesn't interest me much these days. I've been to Europe loads of times and travelled all over the place there - also lived there for a while. I'm kept busy with lots of other interests now. Don't forget, we are all different. There's nothing wrong with people being happy and content where they live - even those you sneer at in Perth. As long as they're happy that's all that matters. The ones that aren't will leave when they get the chance. I don't see any problem with that. Each to their own.
  7. It's the same here. I live in a fairly medium sized town (population 25,000) and there are definitely very nice areas and areas I wouldn't live in if you paid me.
  8. It was tongue in cheek re the boredom Flag. I think these days more people are gong to have to be prepared to move to where the work is. We moved from one side of the country to the other twice so I do know it can be fairly traumatic.
  9. Anywhere is cheaper than Sydney. As long as they manage to find work in Perth - good on them. Hope they don't get bored easily though.
  10. The trauma of living there has left a lifelong scar in his psyche.
  11. Indeed and thank goodness - we are all different. I could never live in a city again. It is indeed strange how folk from the UK migrate to Perth in such large numbers. Even 30 years ago I was really surprised at how many different British accents there were around the place. Never found that in Sydney. Do you think you will ever up sticks and move away from Perth?
  12. According comments from some people on this forum it is. I think though after hearing about how boring Perth is for the millionth time from PB it does start to get ......... dare I say it ............................ boring. I only lived there for something like 4 years I think but I didn't find it boring at all. Mind you I never went looking for much nightlife - too busy with babies and building a house back then. If he thought Perth was boring I wonder what he'd think of Devonport. Funnily enough I'm never bored here either.
  13. You are like a stuck record PB.
  14. I doubt watching that show had anything to do with the OP migrating.
  15. Of course it wouldn't look foolish and as another poster mentioned, there are lots of other places to live and work in the UK rather than the Midlands. If you still feel unhappy after a year and you haven't settled then returning to the UK would probably be best for you.
  16. Do you think so Flag? Oh I know a percentage of society is obsessed with celebrity, money and selfishness but there are a lot of people out there who quietly get on with life helping others and doing a lot of good in their own way without a vicar or priest telling them how to lead their lives.
  17. My favourite place on the Central Coast is Avoca Beach. Don't know how expensive it is now - used to be very reasonable. It's about 25 mins from Gosford.
  18. I've not come across lack of footpaths but I hate the way some idiots park their car across the footpath with the front of the car just into the house driveway leaving no room at all on the footpath. I remember having to push the pram/stroller onto the street to get round the car. Have seen it everywhere - Perth, Sydney and here. Should be illegal. However it wasn't enough to make me want to return to the UK. :cute:
  19. The Pittwater area is lovely for walks/day out. http://churchpointferryservice.com/charters-day-trips/what-to-do/

Personally I would hate to live there. Stinking hot in summer and rough.
  21. I hate to say it but those posters are in for a very expensive shock. Probably end up as some of those people who end up hating Australia.
  22. People are out walking and cycling here from sunrise to sunset. Some very good tracks for both those pastimes. On smiling and nodding terms with a good few of them now. Some of the cyclists need to get a bell for their bikes instead of yelling "passing".
  23. What does marriage stand for? There's a question. We've been married 40 years next month. Not in church - just the local registry office. I have been bridesmaid and matron of honour at a fair few church weddings and more than half of those ended in divorce. Some of the various couples have gone on to marry two or even three times since then. I worked with a woman who has 4 children and she and her partner don't intend to marry at all. Really, I don't know what marriage stands for even after all these years. Good luck to them all and that includes gay marriages.
  24. I know a few people who have moved back without waiting to become citizens. I do agree with Quoll though as some of the folk who moved back have children who were born here and the grown up children have returned to Australia to work. If they decide to stay here their parents will probably just come on holiday visas to visit. It's entirely up to you whether or not you want citizenship.
