  1. Has the government put a cap on how many houses should be built or don;'t they care. I would be concerned too much will spoil such a lovely place or maybe others would disagree as it could become a more interesting place in which to live. Different cultures e.g
  2. There seems to be a lot of building blocks for sale on the island. Is this good or bad for Tassie? Does it mean more and more are deciding to relocate from other parts of Aus? What about the work situation?
  3. What a magnificent photo. Uk is in a big freeze but where we are in France we've had very little snow. Others places not so lucky. Just our luck though the central heating has failed. Waiting for the plumber! Do you normally have snow so early?
  4. The tv is showing a new commercial advertising Tasmania and it's rather good. Look out for the tourists!
  5. Gosh what a diverse place it is. Wish I'd discovered it years ago. Hindsight a wonderful thing. Don't regret but think we could have made life easier for ourselves had we chosen a different path. C;'est la vie!
  6. Thank you for the link. Well that answers my question doesn it! Sounds fantastic and you don't have to travel far which is even better. Not too hot either. My daughter posts a lot of walks she does in Cairns but although it is beautiful and green would be far too hot for us oldies even though she and her husband go out early morning. They do look healthy though I have to say. We're all a bit pale and insipid here at present. Awaiting some very cold weather and although where we are in the Morbihan we'll still cop low temps.
  7. Can you enjoy lovely walks in Tas ? Obviously the beaches look fabulous for this but I was wondering if you have access to country walks through open land and forests.
  8. Thank you for your responses. Don't think we'll be returning after all. Too big a move at our tender age! Would have been nice but we've had a good run and the thought of starting all over again wears me out thinking about it. Enjoy your lives and make the most of every moment. xxx
  9. Well you can't say you don't get bored! Incredible. We've still got rain and more rain with the occasional sunny day. Will be so pleased when spring arrives and my daughter from Aus.
  10. Sounds and looks splendid. So nice to be able to buy local produce and fresh. I remember buying superb bread in Aus. Sour dough was very popular
  11. Buying direct from producer even better and it's good to know you can. I do enjoy the atmosphere of a market though but of course France survives on it's markets so a different culture. Some of them are wonderful and I enjoy the buzz. Sitting in a nice square having a coffee and people watching is another enjoyable pastime. However, if we do manage to come to Tas will accept what it has to offer and be happy. After all we've spent the last 13 years enjoying France and a new scene will be interesting in our dotage.
  12. I love this thread. Pics are super and give a wonderful aspect of Tasmania. Great the weather is so good you can all enjoy such fantastic places.
  13. looks as if you need some rain. South of France is also tinder dry. Scary.
  14. The new tax is a bit rough isn't it? they don't earn that much do they? The farmers in the uk are worried about brexit too because the pickers they've had coming year after year are concerned and backing off. What a world we live in! The conditions provided are excellent and they're more like family.
  15. why not advertise for students who are travelling around Aus. They would appreciate earning some money providing the accommodation was reasonable. In France pickers are treated very well and from what I can see a lovely lunch is provided, even a glass of wine. If you want people to work hard look after them and don't abuse. The word soon gets out.
  16. 23-26 would be ideal for me. Do you get extreme changes in one day like Melbourne?
  17. We would be paying cash if we get enough from the house in France to transfer to Aus. No more than $300000 for sure. Houses go for next to nothing here,
  18. bloody hell and I thought it was expensive here. how things have changed over the years. Tasmania certainly seems more realistic and properties are about a third of the price to Melbourne although in Ballarat they a re more reasonable by the look of it. C'est la vie! It pays to know these things and I do appreciate your replies.
  19. I've tried googling for information but as usual totally confused by the different headings. What is the stamp duty on a house i.e. $300000. Victoria or Tasmania Are there any other expenses involved? It would be a cash sale and we're pensioners and no we wouldn't be first time buyers even though we've been away for 13 years.
  20. We lived in the bush in Victoria in a place called Lal Lal so I know what you mean when you talk about possums and other hungry little devils. The parrots ate every bit of fruit we ever managed to grow but we used to leave carrots for the kangaroos and wallabies and it sure was a delight to see and hear them crunching away at night. Not too keen on the variety of snakes though. Wasn't sorry to leave them behind.
  21. My goodness you are having fun and games. What a difference in temperatures. How are you gardens standing up to it all? Sounds like Hobart is one of the hottest places. My daughter tells me they had 42deg day ago. Not for me! Still if we monkey about with the climate we can expect to experience extremes. I think Tassie would probably be the better of climates though. Another daughter who lives in Cairns hasn't complained so far this year but I guess their turn will come. We've had nothing but rain and some parts of France snow. At least the trees won't suffer this year. Apart from the winds I guess it's been good bbq weather.
  22. Perfect weather. Make the most of it. We've had fun and games here. squally weather, high winds and rain like I've never known. No electricity for a few hours and as we're all electric we couldn't even have a cup of tea!
