  1. Yes. Drug houses get busted all the time. I guess the more reporting goes on the more hits the cops can make in their ling term investigations
  2. Fathers Day got me thinking. My Dad sent me a message that tugged at the heartstrings and made me feel guilty for leaving him. How do you reconcile the gaps and disconnects that occur when your ageing family are in another country. Covid making it more difficult to book a flight on a whim. I cope with it very well normally and even welcome the distance but today and at other significant family times it hits a bit harder.....
  3. Not strictly true of Perth. The cheaper suburbs are usually consider 'rougher'. Not as polished and shiny. Often older suburbs. An element of 'undesirables.' Certainly not soulless, full of life in fact! Don't be fooled, some of the mid price so called better suburbs have huge problems potential with wayward youth. The suburbs I think of as soulless are the new far flung beachside burbs. Eglington, Alkimos, Jindalee etc. They appeal to young first time buyers and dare I say new poms to the country? There's little infrastructure, concrete jungle, not enough greenery....but you are near a beach in a big new 4 x 2. Wouldn't suit us.
  4. I think Parmelia is one of the cheapest suburbs in Perth. I expect the ambiance is reflective of that. However I could be way off...We are in the Northern suburbs. There are people on here who live south though.
  5. Do you like things to do nearby, bars, restaurants etc, history, culture? Country feel? Fremantle or Leederville might suit you for a city vibe. More culture in Freo. Both on the train line. You’d be paying closer to 1000k to live there though. Houses for 700k up in Leederville. Guildford is lovely. 20 mins from city. On the train line. Hills region. Historic early settlement town. 700k plus for a 3 bed though.
  6. I don’t know Leeming well but there’s another PIO member who does. I’d call Leeming a ‘typical’ pleasant older suburb though. A very different feel in other areas, dependent on your needs.
  7. Where did you stay when you came?
  8. I’ve only ever visited Melbourne twice and not seen beyond the CBD. That didn’t thrill me tbh. House prices very much depend on your needs and where you want to live. We live 35 mins from the city and house prices are average 500k in our suburb. Rush hour is a pain. If I’m driving back from the office after 4pm it’ll take me an hour to get home. If I get on the road before that 45 mins. 30 outside of rush hour. Same in the morning and it’s worst from say 7 till 8.30am. The train is a good option. A lot of people park at train station and commute in that way. Infrastructure not too bad. Freeway goes up to Butler which is about 50 mins out from City with extensions planned to start soon. My husband works at the airport and recent works have shaved a good 10 mins off his commute. Id recommend Perth but I’m biased. What’s your lifestyle like? What are you looking for? I’d describe Perth as a clean, modern, pretty city with stunning coastline and bush in equal measure. If you like the outdoor lifestyle it’s perfect. It’s very quiet in comparison to Melbourne. It’s diverse with the coastal burbs having a very different feel to the hills and the outer burbs respectively.
  9. Is it unfair? Absolutely. The more.people who believe it though the better. We like it quiet.
  10. They are but not in the variety seen in the UK. Family sized packs are more commonly purchased. Which just encourages you to eat more IMO.
  11. AUSSIE chips are different to British crisps. I know what the poster means.
  12. You need to try another state or another region of Vic. You don't want to go home. You just need them to send you crisps or go find a good pommy shop.
  13. I don’t miss the long summer days or the short winter days in the UK. I go to bed early and feels alien with the sun still up. I remember as a kid hating it too. It’s nice that here in WA we get at least 10 good hours of daylight in the middle of winter. Especially on a day like today. Sorry for going off topic. This is what you do miss not what you don’t. I miss proper chippy chips not frozen ones or whatever it is we get here.
  14. People catch them and return them for sport..They don't believe they are harmful. They don't advertise it though as they know it's frowned upon. "Holy carp! Perth's urban fishers take to the drains" https://amp.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/holy-carp-perths-urban-fishers-take-to-the-drains-20141126-11ulqd.html I believe the Eastern species are thought to cause more problems.
  15. Apparently so. That's why it's an underground thing.
  16. There's a big carp fishing movement in Australia too. Poms and South Africans.
  17. Difficult to remember when the 'novelty' wore off, maybe a year? It felt 'normal' as in not like we were on holiday or feeling unsettled extremely quickly, say 6 weeks? Still have moments when I pinch myself with the views driving home from work along the coast or in otherwise spectacular spot or everyday situation.
  18. Wow!!! Think it was 35p or something when we left 12 years ago
  19. Mostly I'd miss the weather, the flora and fauna, the positivity and the space.
  20. We'd never lived far from home and we hadn't travelled beyond Europe before emigrating.
  21. I think there are more complex factors at play as to whether one settles and feels ‘at home’. Hand on heart I feel fully settled and also connected to Australia. There’s a sense of this is a country built on immigration, some have just been here a bit longer. We’re no different to them. The true blue folks. We’ve all come here and contributed to the ongoing prosperity, growth and development of the country. The real Australians (if we want to use that terminology) are still marginalised in this new immigrant led version of Australia. I really like the lyrics of that song, I am, you are, we are Australian. Corny as it is. I feel as at home here as I did in the UK. Does that make me an oddity?! Happy to wear the cap if it fits!
  22. It was cited amongst other reasons as part of the ‘discontent’ contributing to a return to the UK.
