  1. I do so believe in leaps of faith. Life is so very short. What's a life lived without risk? Make the most of your opportunities and regret nothing. Choices denied to many.
  2. My daughter says they are seeing the same people at the home opens. Easily 40 at each and each property has more than 20 applications. They found a perfect place we thought would be theirs. It went for $150 a week more than advertised and advertised price was already inflated.
  3. That’s something to look into, thanks. She doesn’t want to take oldest out of his current school if at all possible as he’s only just started in kindy and loving it. Plus they are a short distance from us and our support. However they have cast the net wider as a necessary thing. If worst comes to worst they can dig heels in and stay till end of lease (Feb) but the sale is conditional on existing tenants moving out in 60 days. The owners agent is getting quite pushy and short with them. Can see his commission flying out the window. There’s just nothing out there for them. Keeping everything crossed and there’s our spare room and caravan too but as you can imagine she’s not thrilled at that prospect.
  4. I hope so. My daughters rental house has been sold and she’s been given 60 days to vacate. They cannot find another suitable property at a reasonable price. They’re at risk of homelessness and do not have the funds to compete with those offering $150 a week I’ve the advertised price. She’s also unwilling to live in a leaking hovel as the owner of the house she’s in now suggests they should look at anything and everything. They were given 1st refusal on a dump that it was criminal to charge rent for. With 2 kids, a dog and a job to travel to they can’t go too far out from where they already are and need a certain type of home at least with some outdoor space. Not to mention limited budget. Worrying times.
  5. Good luck. It’s really tough out there to be honest and most rentals are going higher than advertised rates. Not a question of getting one in area you want- more of getting one at all. Maybe get your family to look for you before you come (if it’s you that has family here)
  6. Are you aware that there’s a rental crisis right now? It’s very difficult to secure property
  7. My street in Perth is very quiet. Nobody out after dark. That tends to be the nature of suburbia. No street parties as such. I live in an older suburb. I could walk to the shops and pub if I wanted to. There’s lots of green space. Transport links are ok. Value for money is good. When choosing a suburb identify your non negotiables; Budget (very important- choose the suburb based on your budget not the other way around) Amenities within walking distance - how important is this? Local schools? Commute time and bus/rail links? Proximity to beach, river or green space? We used PIO and other sites extensively when planning our move and we still live within 10km of original suburb we moved to. Do your homework and you should be fine.
  8. Be careful when picking suburbs, absolutely and not defensive at all, just pointing out some facts. I just can’t think of any suburbs that meet your specific criteria of ‘soulless’ that’s all. I guess soulless is also subjective!
  9. I’d guess it’s going to suit you. What areas are you looking at? You might prefer the hills region to Joondalup area.
  10. Yes I found the paywall article. No source identified though which makes it less than reliable. I think by the census stats 4 years later you can assume it was not accurate.
  11. That's not really accurate about Perth to be fair. Most of the newer suburbs have livability at their core with amenities within walking distance. Pub, cafe, restaurant, park
  12. Very good point and something I missed
  13. All that glisters is not gold.
  14. Well according to the 2016 census it was 28%?
  15. Where did you find that stat?
  16. Huge South African population in Perth. I know lots of them. If you send your kids to a Christian school Poms are outnumbered.
  17. I don’t know of any British ghettos- I think that’s a step too far. The far northern and far southern coastal suburbs attract many a new migrant, some settle, some don’t… but they are always outnumbered by their Australian counterparts. I think it’s a bit of a myth. In my experience anyway- and I do a lot of travelling up and down the various suburbs meeting a variety of folk.
  18. I dont think theres anywhere remotely like Britain in Perth. Unless the odd British themed pub, bakery or chippy counts? Agree on the multiculturalism and the vibe changes depending on the suburb. Mirrabooka for example very different demographic to say Fremantle. In my street we have 2 British families (including us) Aussies, Vietnamese and Kiwi. Those I know anyway....
  19. Imagine if Perth had a trip advisor page! My advice as a citizen of 12 years plus, come and decide for yourself. There are many reasons that Perth comes in high up on many 'liveability' 'quality of life' surveys etc. The negatives for us? It's getting busier and more crowded.
  20. Im driving the same car I bought new 12 years ago. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It goes. Thats all I care about. Each to their own but I'd rather spend money elsewhere.
  21. I guess much depends on your lifestyle. I checked one of the posted links and I'm already living the 'age pension' life so I reckon we'll be ok. I don't feel like we're just 'getting by'. We're just frugal and don't buy new stuff for the sake of it. I think wealth is very subjective.
  22. You get by on whatever you have. I won’t be worried once the mortgage is paid off and I certainly won’t be replacing the car every 3-5 years- what a gigantic waste of funds.
  23. So much potential in that area....definitely in need of investment.
