  1. He's going to have to make oatcakes tomorrow now..... The best thing to come out of the Potteries Poveys were our favourite. Or Tunstall market ones.
  2. These are some he made for Christmas. We always have oatcakes for Christmas Eve brunch. This is the recipe he uses most often I think.
  3. It’s a rite of passage for the little uns. Are you from Staffs?
  4. He cooks them in a frying pan. Time consuming but tried on the bbq flat plate and not as successful. I’ll dig out the recipe. I think he tweaks it a bit though. Has to be thin enough to get them just right. I tried once but too much faff. It’s his baby. Good try at the accent btw
  5. Your son sounds like a legend. A lot more interesting than the average Joe. Very sad that his dream went up in smoke. The risk of more rural living. Fortunately our BAL is pretty low due to our location.
  6. That's why I prefaced my post with Peoples ideas of being off grid vary. The purists wouldn't entertain an internet connection but the realists understand it's essential for most. That's just one aspect. I'm not talking about raising and killing our own meat, just 'some' veggies, eggs etc. The community we are moving to is quite progressive and there is an shire requirement/ expectation that our home is built to solar passive principles and makes use of sustainable energy. Plenty of people live without mains electric and water. We've got to start somewhere. This reliance on convenience and abundance is killing the planet. High spec off grid as a starting point.
  7. We’re not moving to the eco village. Not too far from there though. We’re on our own small block.
  8. I’d say in well run departments and services there’s team decision making. That’s been my experience on the whole throughout my career. Regardless of ‘rank’. It’s a well known fact that the nurses run the show on most wards and it’s in the junior Dr/intern best interests to make friends with the nursing team. Those attempting to lord it over staff soon come unstuck. Mutual respect is the name of the game. A senior nurses specialist input would likely supersede the junior Drs opinion. In fact most nurses find themselves consulted for opinion by Drs. GPs deferring to expert knowledge of specialist /experienced nurses etc. Of course the accountability lies with the prescriber so nurses are wise to always work within their scope of practice. Unless a Nurse Prescriber not paid to prescribe. As an autonomous practitioner we have to be accountable for our own clinical decision making. Thankfully the Patriarchal medical model is ‘mostly’ dead in the water. Still a few Dinosaurs lurking though.
  9. Thanks Quoll. We won't be far from town so not really a big problem as we age...however that's why we are doing it sooner rather than later as we edge closer towards our 50s as I've seen others move back to be closer to hospitals...what a drag. I think I'd rather sit tight and hope for the best. Here in the South West of WA there is a really exciting project called Witchcliffe Eco Village. It's really taking off. I'm sure there are others across Australia. It's kind of the new model of off grid, encouraging community, self sustainability and shared resources.
  10. We will.have a mains electricity collection (impossible to avoid initially) but aim to not use and build our solar into a self sufficient system over time. We're off mains water but so are a lot of people in the country. Gas bottles. So it's not like the old days really.
  11. Do any PIO members have any experience of longer term off grid life? There are lots of differences of opinion about what going 'off-grid' means. I'm thinking along the lines of being non reliant on services (water, mains electricity and gas) Being as self sufficient as possible. Growing your own food or being involved in a community sgaring scheme. Living a frugal life and aiming to reduce waste, reduce consumption of goods, reuse, recycle etc. Anyone else interested?
  12. I know? I'm not sure why we're still talking about it? Majority of nurses work at RN and CN level. Most hospital wards and other nursing departments in community etc have a team of RN, less CN, 1 CNC/CNS and a NP or NM. All sectors that work across a 24/7 time period attracts penalties. I'm.not sure about in other states but in WA public sector also pays a qualification allowance too for nurses with post grad qualifications. We're well off topic now so this'll be my last comment. See what you started @Blue Flu?? Yes, your friend was highly likely to be earning 130k in a senior nursing role. Those combined salaries you quoted would certainly secure a home loan if one was motivated to find the right home.
  13. I also know what nurses earn too. Nurses pay in the public sector is freely available to look up under the award. No RN or CN earns base rate $70. Many CNM, CNC, NP do. Private sector often pays less. NFP even less. There are state differences too.
  14. Not bad huh I miss those penalty rates.....
  15. What do you mean by outrank? A top nurse practitioner can earn more than a newly minted Dr.
  16. Like I said, flat rate $70 if level 3 and above. Clinical nurse consultant or specialist. The pay range is wide. RN, CN, CNC, CNM. A 2.4 top grade clinical nurse earns about $51/hr. with Penalty for Sun can take it up to in excess of $80.
  17. Absolutely not....but then I've no interest whatsoever in football and most sports. I'm more intetested in Ash Barty and her first Wimbledon final.
  18. The perfect brekkie. Staffordshire oatcakes with bacon and cheese. Black pudding. Fried tomato. Maybe an Irish pork sausage. Plus or minus fried egg. If no oatcakes Bacon, sausage, tomato, eggs, wilted spinach, black pudding. Hold the beans. I also like adding pan seared asparagus and swapping bacon for smoked salmon.
  19. You best stick to chicken parmi then
  20. Good man. My hubby makes his own now. A breakfast isn't complete without them. The family go crazy for them.
  21. Chips on a full English in the European holiday spots favoured by Poms. I always remember thinking, they don’t do that at home?
