  1. Home is where your heart is. I was born and lived in Perth until I graduated from Uni, moved to Sydney for many years and am now off to the UK for the rest of my life. Australia isn't what it used to be, it has lost it's identity and you can't even get decent fish and chips anymore The only thing breaking our hearts right now is having to rehome our beautiful kitty this week who has brought us much joy after showing up on our back doorstep a couple of years ago, she has only been gone a day and I have cried and cried and will cry a lot more for a long time. Other than that I am looking forward to the UK and being able to see the world. Years ago I would have said come to Australia, it is the best place ever but now I would say visit but don't expect too much. I will remember Australia Day but ANZAC Day is more important IMHO as an Australian.
  2. If you have the space it is a no brainer! Bring everything you can... even if you can buy cheap here it is costing you no more to bring your own stuff that you know you have cared for:)
  3. Lane Cove would suit you perfectly. Mosman is a bit far... Neutral Bay or Cremorne would be more suitable. Northern Beaches no way! you should see the hill up to Mosman to get to St Leonards plus it is a Black Spot for cars let alone cyclists. The other route is even worse and would take even longer. Anywhere on the train line is fine because you can take your bike on the train and get off where you choose to cycle from Just be aware that in the older areas where the roads have not been upgraded, there are no designated cycle lanes and you are not allowed to ride on the footpath. Google maps should be of great help to you as far as distance goes.
  4. All I can say is that they won't be taking any job that you would want
  5. I used to be a smoker and the packaging changes made not one iota of a difference. My Dad smoked around me all my life and I think that is the reason why I picked it up myself. I am 4 years smoke free now after 20 years of smoking and would never go back. I would never call a smoker ignorant either... I would call people who throw rubbish and paper products in public ashtrays ignorant.
  6. Wow that is crazy... in Australia JP's are not allowed to charge for certifying copies... it is a community service and it is against the law to charge for it. It is considered an honour to be a JP but obviously you have to have a penchant for signing things or you would just get a sore hand for nothing LOL I needed some done urgently for my Visa and went to a local Real Estate man who was a JP and happily did them for free. I didn't actually need them but I was sending off the originals to the UKBA and may never have seen them again
  7. Reading your posts on the other forum http://www.pomsinadelaide.com/forum/socialising/36110-searching-missing-family-needed-urgently.html may I also suggest that you contact the QLD Police and they will do their best to contact her and let her know that her Dad is ill. They will let you know if they manage to contact her but not her whereabouts if she doesn't want to be found. If she has chosen not to have contact with the family I am guessing she has her reasons.
  8. Definitely worth it if you have enough points for Premium Economy or Business Class
  9. Yes, it is a problem. It absolutely must have the name of the issuing Institution on it or the Qualification is not valid. Get them to reissue it for you on proper Certificate paper.
  10. Oh cool, I tape everything to buggery anyway LOL Might put some acid free tissue paper between layers too. Miltons is great, I have some tablets here I didn't know what I would use them for.. but now I do! Thanks very much for the tips
  11. I was thinking when I pack I am more worried about the boxes staying in one piece if they get wet or split. I am going to buy the massive bin bags from the supermarket that line wheelie bins and put one of those in the box to line it before I pack it I would get a mix of boxes for a Move Cube.
  12. Australia Post are only trying to help because if they send it off wrong then you will be liable to pay the charges again, not them. Things are different here in Australia as the Marriage Certificate you sign at your wedding is not the official one, it gets issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages. If in doubt, get them to pop in the Original documents with the renewal application. You will get everything back with the new Passport. Takes no more than 2 weeks to get a UK Passport back, I think Hubby got his back in 10 days. They are super efficient in Manila! I even got my Right of Abode Visa signed sealed and delivered in less than 3 weeks
  13. {{{Big Hugs}}} for you. Sorry that he turned out to be such a **** (insert any four letter word) Be very careful because if he did pre-plan this whole thing he can turn it all around on you. One of the ways of getting around the conditions of staying on a spousal visa once sponsorship has been withdrawn by the spouse is if the person being sponsored is a victim of domestic violence. He could turn around and say you abused him. Document everything and get witnesses... it is your word against his at the end of the day and they are not going to boot him based on hearsay.
  14. Seriously... we are not that backwards... we have had Lea & Perrins in the supermarket here ever since I was little and I am not young! We also have Nandos, I buy the Peri Peri although I find the Extra Hot to be less hot than the Hot Not sure about your Garlic one but I will check next time I am in that aisle.
  15. A few months ago I heard on the radio that Sydney was 50% more expensive than New York to live in. 10 years ago it was 25% cheaper. I do disagree on the prices of some of the consumables, including Movie tickets if you shop around. However I feel that there are no standards in Australia anymore and most things we go out to do are more than disappointing and not worth even a discounted price I wish more people would complain and then maybe they would lift their game.
  16. You probably have had a proper pest control done at your property. As long as it is maintained once a year you won't have a problem We have Redbacks in Sydney where I live now because our Landlord has done jack sh*t the whole 3 years we have lived here and the strata has done nothing for many years because of the old stingy owners that live around us. Spiders really do freak me out to but I don't panic and just get the vacuum out. Hubby says they will run back out but I had to point out to him that the bag has a flap that closes when not in use so they can't. Actually, I do have to giggle because I didn't tell him about the massive 10cm hairy leg Huntsman I sucked up a month or two ago... the little sucker got sucked up before he saw it
  17. I don't see why cans would be a problem but fresh fruit & vegetables or anything fresh really is a no no. I once saw a lady have her Cottage Cheese confiscated due to an avid Beagle sniffer dog and that was just at Perth Airport getting off a flight from Sydney. No idea why she was trying to smuggle it in but each to their own contraband LOL Also I would never use recycled packaging as they will open anything that they suspect has come into contact with fresh goods or animals.
  18. Is it not possible for someone to get RPL from an Accredited Australian Educational Institution? I used to work in the industry and it isn't difficult as long as you can match the modules/units via descriptors.
  19. I was born and bred in Perth and I used to scream and freeze on the spot when I saw a Spider when I was little. After many years of growing a tolerance towards them I can now "Hoover" them up but there is no place worse than Perth if you hate spiders. Redbacks, White Tails, Wolf Spiders... you name them... they are everywhere. Daddy Longlegs of course are too but they are completely harmless. There is no point lying to you as they are absolutely everywhere. They are actually beautiful creatures. I have a friend who freaks out when she sees a tiny little skinky dink lizard which I adore... so each to their own phobia LOL
  20. Cheers IYM Sorry, I am a donger... I didn't read the whole thing properly... very tired at the mo with all the things to do The boxes are covered for total loss at $100 per box in the quoted shipping fee. The 5% of value Insurance is for All Risk Insurance. I understand that I am responsible for breakages (as I am packing myself but I can pack like no other LOL), Customs and Quarantine. What I want to be covered for is theft, damage (eg a crate falls on my boxes and squashes them) and having them sink or thrown overboard etc... i.e. anything beyond my control. I would definitely be happy to insure with someone else, in fact I think it would be preferable if it is indeed possible?
  21. Can anyone tell me what percentage of the value of the goods they paid for theirs? I am probably going to go with Seven Seas Worldwide and take out Total Loss Insurance. They already include $100 per box so with 30 boxes I am covered for $3000. It is then up to me to value my stuff and pay the difference times 5%. Is 5% a good rate or should I be looking to insure through an external company? Also has anyone ever had to make a claim?
  22. Does the Tax Office not have a record of his Employment? I am guessing since it affects your ability to get a Pension in the UK that they would keep a record of everything. Also I think that a letter from his old Employers with current contact details not on letterhead would be great anyway. No such thing as overkill when filling in forms for this type of application
  23. Hope your application goes well Do you have the Visa Number you are applying for as their are loads of different ones? My Hubby is here on a 820 Onshore Partner Visa which we applied for when his WHV was due to expire... it took them 17 months to even look at our application after being told they would get back to us in 9 months... so good luck with yours, not sure how other categories fare with regards to processing times.
  24. It depends on the type of hot weather you are after. Perth is hot and dry... I never knew what mould was until I moved East. Far North Qld is Tropical so hot and wet... Brisbane down to NSW is Sub Tropical so warm/hot and wet or warm/hot and dry depending upon how El Nino decides to treat us any given year. Personally I prefer the Perth heat but only if you have air conditioned everything which we didn't when growing up. We used to be sent home from school when it reached 42 degrees. My Hubby's Asthma has improved dramatically since being in Oz but he is severely allergic to grass and apparently we mow our lawns waaaaaaaaaaay too much. I don't even bother mowing ours because he could actually die... it is a forest in our yard LOL If we owned I would pave the lot!
