  1. I moved because I'm married to an Aussie. While I miss family and friends I love being in Sydney. Positives; weather, food, friendliness, fairly easy going. Negatives; lots of red tape and aggressive driving standards. Some will agree with me, some won't. Point is we are all different, have different tastes and different experinces so very hard to say if a country is for you based on a strangers opinion. I would have perfectly been happy in UK too but I have surprised myself at how quickly I've settled here and how much I actually enjoy being in the Sun, it gives me a buzz.
  2. Here's a ready made thread for you....... http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/news-chat-dilemmas/181058-top-10-places-visit.html
  3. BBC all the way for me, dont use anything else for UK news.
  4. Why is Australia the only choice? Why not somewhere else within the UK? Sorry I don't know your history so ignore me if I'm asking the obvious questions! If you weren't able to settle 9 months ago, what would be different now?
  5. The problem is, sometimes, with the agent rather than the employer. The agent wants to preserve the relationship with the employer so they are reluctant to put forward candidates with short term visa's for fear they may leave the job even before the work contract is up. I'm not suggesting it's right but it is what happens with some. Have you tried applying directly to companies?
  6. I've only done Sydney but then I live there! Looking forward to doing some of the others including Uluru.
  7. I quit my job today after just 16 days, with my noticed period I would have been in the job for only 4 weeks and on this was a permie role! I got a better offer, one I couldn't really refuse. Conversely the longest I've spent in a single job (well single company really) was 11 years. What's the shortest and longest time you've ever spent in a job?
  8. Congratulations, just rewards for the hard work and sacrifice. Well done, always nice to see enterprise being rewarded.
  9. I got into computers at the age of 11 when I saw my cousin's game he had programmed on the BBC micro, I was hooked! By the time I was 16 I'd written my own game, a simple football management type game on BASIC, yes I really was a nerd.......until I discovered college and university! All the drinking and late nights killed my brain cells so now I work as a project manager telling the real developers what to get done! Choosing career is extremely difficult, I didn't choose to be a project manager it just kinda worked out that way. I honestly wouldn't know what my dream job would be but I'm happy enough in mine. Make a list of all the things that interests you, what you think your skills are and start looking at careers sites as to what kind of a job would match those skills. Try speaking to recruitment agents too, there are one or two decent ones out there. Best of luck. If you choose to get into IT fire away with the questions!
  10. I flew with them in Jan, great airline with friendly service. I dont like the headphones the planes offer so bring your own is what i say. The headphone jack is actually 2 pin but if you put it in one and twist it a little it does actually work. Their entertainment is fantastic, lots to choose from and all on demand. Be warned the KL to SYD leg use a 747 (or something) thats fairly old so the TV is not as good, the A380 is miles better. Join their enrich frequent flyer scheme, pretty good offers from them after you have flown once.
  11. I can't comment on other countries as I don't have personal experience of them. One thing I can say is a fair few Irish people are suffering, these happen to be friends of mine that have all commented how finding employment in Ireland is extremely difficult. Granted nearly all of them were based in Dublin so I'm not sure of the whole country.
  12. I think you need to visit some of the more deprived areas of the UK; Croydon, Lewisham, Deptford, etc. So many shops have closed as they are no longer getting the custom they used to. I think it's partly because of the on-line boom but also because people have less disposable income so they are being selective with their purchases. Just think about how many big name retailers have gone under recently, you can't deny the recession has certainly affected some of the population. I'm not suggesting the whole country is doomed as invariably you will have people that earn sufficient money or have sufficient savings that can weather the current storm.
  13. I've only been in Oz for 3 months but while in the UK the recession didn't affect me greatly. However I did notice a decline in jobs (IT in London), especially in the banking sector. I know of at least a couple of people in London still looking for work. I think employers are being very selective as they can afford to be given the wealth of candidates that are out there looking. I do think the media has hyped up the recession at times but then I remember I am privileged enough to be earning above the national UK average salary. It's very easy to forget about those people, when you're earning around 24k a year you can understand how it would be very difficult for people, especially those with kids.
  14. LOL Stacey they are made from cottage cheese & syrup... better than any Doughnut including Krispy Kreme. I adore Indian desserts, they also do like a rice pudding one, it is amazing with a capital A. On another note... did I mention that I make a killer Tiramisu... food for thought I love a good Triamisu, how do I get one of yours?! Indian deserts are fantastic but really sweet. My absolute favorite Indian desert has to be Rasmali, yum!!
  15. Do it yourself if your whv application is straight forward. Opening a bank account and getting the tax file number is a doddle.

    Snakes!

Well done, I admire the bravery! I'm terrified of Snakes and unless I'm comatose there's no way I'd have a Snake touching any part of my body!!
  17. Herein lies the problem. I'm old enough to have been through the system and wise enough to know I'm not a workalohic (life's too short) but nor am I a plodder. There is definite potential to grow in the perm role but the move would be good too, I just can't decide whether I want to get into a stressful position for that extra money while risking the possibility I have to job hunt in 12 months and will have burnt bridges where I am now. (I can't imagine they'd be happy with me leaving them in the space of 2 weeks!)
  18. Thanks both and I am leaning towards the perm role myself. The money however is hugely tempting, will need to sleep on it for a little while longer!
  19. It's economic migration, simply people trying to be financially better off in the long run. Jules also makes a very valid point, a lot of the Indian IT workers are employed by Indian outsourcing companies and don't have much of a say when they are farmed out to. The OZ (and the UK) bashing will continue forever, some people feel the need to defend their country of choice against all logical arguments as it's easier to have the blinkers on but I'm digressing from Jule's original thread. I don't believe it was intended to be Australia bashing, merely an observation made.
  20. I started a new job 2 weeks ago, the work is pretty straight forward and the people seem nice. I'm paid around $15k less than what I should probably truly get but it is a permanent role. I interviewed elsewhere before and while they verbally offered me a 12 month contract it fell through in the end. However they've now made contact again and want to offer me a slightly different position, again a 12 month contract. It pays about 30% more than what the job I'm doing now, it's much a bigger role but then I can foresee increased stress levels as it's quite a demanding role. My wife is doing a contract and could find herself out of a job in 2 months so I need to consider job security. Now, what do I do? Do I leave a comfortable position for more money? More stress but bigger profile. Decisions decisions, I can't make my mind up! Any thoughts on what you would do? Ta.
  21. As Britchickx and colinmaclec point out I was specifically referring to Indians as that's what the original thread was about. Yes, there are a lot more Asians in Australia but they mostly tend to be Far East Asians as opposed to the South Asians.
  22. In your view I'm sure it is. I'm not one to cite one country is better than the other, they both have their merits.
  23. Its not that surprising. The UK has a lot more Indians than OZ and some places are pretty much little India. You can get more Indian things in the UK, that coupled with a shorter time for PR and the ability to bring in family members easier makes the UK a far more propoistion. Oh and the chances of them already having friends in the UK would be pretty high i would think.
  24. Welcome to PIO. I say definitely give it a go. If you flatshare I think $70k is reasonable. You are far from old, plenty of mid 30's around. I find Sydney quite a friendly place so I'm sure you'll meet people when you're here but you could also join dating sites, always worth a try. Good luck on your journey. Without trying to sound annoying I would say don't make finding a partner the focus of your life, enjoy and have fun in all that you do. People are attracted to happy people and I'm sure you'll find someone soon enough. (I hated it when people kept saying that to me back when I was single but I can honestly the moment I stopped looking hard I met my wife)
  25. I'm puzzled. How much effort will it take to contact your old school or exam board to get a copy of your certificate? Surely less effort than that needed to go down the gas route seeing as you're not even sure where to start? Why not chase up the school/exam board and in the meantime look into the alternative career as a gas fiitter? (google is your friend) I agree it seems it seems a bit over the top but people in senior positions (CEO's, MPs) have been caught lying about their qualifications. While you may be entirely honest all they're asking for is evidence of your claims, i would expect this from any government position globally. Best of luck in whatever you decide.
