  1. Who are you flying with ? we opened a bank account with ANZ who were tied with emirates who then gave us 50kg each, I to was working ( joiner ) until we moved out so kept a small basic kit and took this with me as check in put every thing on the scale at Manchester 124kg Thought oh dear this is going to cost reply was good luck in your new life down under . i then sent some items that I needed DHL this cost £300 and the rest in our container if you have a start from my experience the guys will help you out with tools you have not got for the short term , all power tools are 240v , some items are expensive others are cheaper to buy, good luck with your move.
  2. Not worth the hassle , there are plenty of deals to be had out here. the other thing to take into consideration furniture size etc , if you are renting are you sure the furniture would fit ok into your new home,
  3. All ways get 3 quotes and ask to go and see some of thier completed works ,
  4. I will be building my own house ,as I am a licensed builder . After renovating a fair few over the last 30 years am finally filling my dream to build my own house from scratch
  5. We are just going through the process now got the deposit saved up made offer on the land which was accepted and had the mortgage offer through it's taken about 7 days to sort out, we got our loan through rams and there is no time limit to build the house .
  6. I have been working up at Ettalong overseeing a job here as a PM so don't have to be on site at a set time travelling from Mona vale I think I would jump off the harbour bridge if this was going to be my daily commute it's just too far to travel. You will need to be more realistic where to live ,what's the point in moving 12,000 miles to travel upwards of 4-5 hours a day to get to work.
  7. I have 2 daughters back in uk from my first marriage my youngest was 18 yesterday which was very tough and my eldest 22 , since we have been out here my eldest has been over 4 times spending better quality time than we ever spent living less than a mile away , the youngest just the once but both coming out again in jan so looking forward to that. face time is a god send it's been tough at times miss them like mad . i went back in feb for first time in nearly 4 years was great to see family and friends but oz is home for now ,life is tough only regret what you have never done not what you have done.
  8. Can't get. Bricklayers in Sydney loads of work here
  9. They should be looking to make existing government departments more efficient before coming out with this rubbish. why should you pay to subsidies to wind farms owned by the Chinese , with out government grants it's not profitable and the carbon footprint to build is off the scale You can't borrow a billion dollars to give in aide to help foreign countries when your in as much debt as the country is. why not give it in food grown by Australian farmers bought off them by the government .you can't give what you haven't got . Free first class air travel to former MP's and family's I believe this is costing a few million a year so they can fly to their holiday homes, full pension of 189k a year to Gillard and Rudd for life , everybody else oh you can work till your 70 and then claim your pension .
  10. It seams that uk mp culture is spreading down to oz , they are only sorry when they get caught, BOF must be a very intelligent person otherwise he would not have got to the position he has , to say he can't remember is total nonsense , by the looks of it he has been stitched / up set up but the ammunition was put there by himself for someone to use by not declaring and then lying about it. I am afraid that there is a lot of corruption involved in politics from grass route level up to the top and a lot are driven by greed and what they can make out of it for themselves, it's about time that they were made accountable for there actions and not be able to simply walk away without consequence .
  11. I brought a fair few with me on the plane in my checked in luggage , some tools are very expensive others are a bit cheaper paslode guns are more expensive out here as a example. i would ship everything to be honest all 240v stuff just swap your plug over to oz type.
  12. Friend of the wife came over on a 457 she was a chemo nurse aged 61 if that helps
  13. Very difficult position to be in, are you up for a massive legal fight which is the way most cases go in this position if you chose to go down that path, maybe better to suck it up but start looking for new job ASAP and then walk away or are you signed up for a contract over a set time period, as others have said go see expert advice . Hope things turn out ok for you.
  14. Do people not remember the 90's most people in London were in negative equity ,it did come back but it took a good 4-5 years ,it just can't keep going up and up, everything was good until 2007/8 then boom GFC, some of us could see it coming others didn't ,always expect the unexpected and take nothing for granted in life
  15. For every bad experience , you will get 2 good ones , sorry to hear of all your problems as they say it's only money, good luck with your new life down under
  16. you could well be right , the op needs to check first
  17. I had problems when I was in school with spelling, just couldn't work it out, maths was no problem , I can remember being in many English lessons where the teacher would pick on people to read out to the rest of the class I could do this fine but at times the whole page would just look like a blank piece of paper ,I never told anybody as I didn't want to be labeled ,as I got older things got better still struggle with some spelling, but I often find myself typing a word backwards , spell check to me is a big help.
  18. Have you got the required visa to work in Australia ?, also I might be wrong but I think 40 is the cut off point age wise unless it's special circumstances ,I may be wrong tho. Good luck.
  19. We shipped some bottles with our items that we had collected on a round the world trip ,no problems at all
  20. If you can't haggle ,just be polite and ask is that the best price you can do if you get $20 bucks off its better than nothing ,you will be surprised ,
  21. Not much point in comparing wages to exchange rate unless you are moving to another country , then it's about weighing up quality of life to maybe losing out short term ,
  22. Great story, well done for giving it a go, we have had a similar experience if you are prepared to put the effort in the rewards are there
  23. You will hear good and bad experiences with most , my advice is to get a detailed "quote" and don't let them give you a estimate as they like to charge you more once they have your stuff, good luck with your move.
  24. Think you would struggle to get sponsorship with in this field ,sorry
