  1. No if you actually read it, I was pointing out what will cause the 3 realistic options. The crunch is no one knows how this election will go. With the force of UKIP really un tested at its predicted levels, this one is more unique that before...Plus the SNP are trying to sneak in the back door of Westminster holding hands with the reds. Of course the bank of England is not political, but they are holding off voting for a rise to be non political. When a rise is really overdue, it's putting off a certain amount of investment.
  2. 2015 is going to go either 3 ways. The rate will drop before the election, just as it did before the Scotland vote. Then will either jump up if we get a Conservative rule (alone of with a partner), as stability and the final real prospect of interest rate rise will do the trick. Or if we get the hung parliament, it will stagnate for ages. If the reds win alone or with SNP marriage, then it will tank for the rest of year....So as I'm heading the other way. I'm hoping for a blue vote @ $2+ a £...
  3. Can I ask a question, might seem silly. Can you settle a mortgage early in Oz, just as you can in the UK. As we will likely be looking for a shorter term loan and less than 50% of value. Looking online, they don't seem keen on that. All want to tie you up for 30 years...
  4. Thanks it's clearer now. But now I'm wondering about another issue that came to mind. All along the street I'm looking at, they have reasonable sized front gardens, that are hardly used. I keep thinking why don't they put a garage or carport there. It the 8m boundary thing an issue with that, so it's hardstanding only ???. Talking of garages. Its it just the area I'm looking at (Mount Martha). But you see plenty of car ports on the side or front of house (with very big front yards). but hardly any fully build garages (is 3 solid walls and a door). Is it just not the done thing for some reason ??
  5. Sorry. I just remember someone telling me the council always own the first 8ft of land or something. Like most things. I just wanted to ask question on here, before I make myself look like a fool on this or anything else. When talking to agents etc in person. Surely that's what a lot of us are thinking ?
  6. Yes I got that part. Just wondered if it was a set size from the road they own. For a road with no footpath ??
  7. Can anyone advise if this is a set thing ? ie the strip in between your front fence and the road on most out of town locations. Is it a set size that belongs to the council ? I see people using it for parking, some are planted, some have been covered in gravel, some even paved to match driveway. What is the deal, in Victoria at least ? I'm looking at a house that has 2 crap trees on the strip, do you need permission to remove them, is it going to be an issue ?
  8. But when your van lands down under, you won't have access to it while it clears customs etc (out of bond at least). Would you trust leaving lots of expensive tools in it ??
  9. I used a separate company in the UK to get my AQF3 (in fabrication) by RPL (recognition of prior learning). I had to supply lots of evidence and some references, then to an online interview. I think if you know your stuff, it's hard to fail. Cost me £ 2k. I think it's only when you go via Vetasses to get the AQF, you have to do an actual practical. I was just trying to hedge my bets and get the actual visa process to go quicker. It worked !!
  10. Not sure your gonna get much use out of that 110 transformer. They do not use 110v tools down under!!! and won't let you use them on sites.
  11. It's not a deal breaker, just something I had not thought about before. When I was at school in the Eighties, can't remember any more than 20 in all my stage years. Just been talking about it here in the uk. 3 classes in year group all with 30-32 kids. I was stupid enough to ask what happens if more kids move to area, like do you start a new class at some point. Was told we just make then sit on the floor !!! Also another Q. Here in Hampshire, classes are mixed ages. Never had that when I was a kid. ie year 1&2, 3&4, 5&6 are in same class together for 2 years. Does that happen in Oz, esp Vic. ?? Yes am aware of Bentons. Will come down to catchment area. We really liked the older part of Mount Martha, South of the creek. Was staying off Hearn Road over new years. With the new link Road, it's not so bad living further South, even towards Dromana me thinks ?? (for someone who won't work in CBD)
  12. Was wondering about this today. Schools don't seem to publish these details on their websites. I'm looking at Mount Martha area (MMPS, Balcombe, Osborne, Dromana at a stretch). Having issue with my boy at the moment, just turned 7 with 30 kids in class here in UK. He's going through that needing attention phase or he miss behaves. Teacher just says she's to busy. We are off Aug '15 latest.
  13. $20 for 10 coat hangers !!!! That's it moved cancelled. Or is that just a 'Perth' price. :chatterbox:
  14. We want some sort of stop over to break up the flight on our one way to Melbourne. SIN seemed the best option to us as well, hadn't really thought about extra flight cost. I did think Singapore air did some sort of package for this with a few nights hotel stay etc. Getting you to spend time and money in their country and all ??
  15. Look on the bright side. Further along this with help the demand for LNG for other sources. For exports for Aus.
  16. Validated our 189 a few days after Christmas, in lovely Mount Martha. Vic. Now just working hard. Business unit lease expires next April, so we can return to M/M. Strange, just having a sales drive, knowing I will need to wind it down early next year....Also not spending money where I don't have to. Really need a new matress on my bed, but leaving it until we go.
  17. Surely no one would want to leave lovely Mount Martha ?? Hope it all goes well.
  18. Thanks, no I'm not planning on being 6 ft under it !!!! I'm more interested in the finance to buy, not the ability to deal from overseas. Surely all those China folks have suit cases full of yen ?? I have PR and am happy to 'pop over' to complete anything.
  19. This may be a dumb question. A plot of land has come up in Vic that I know really well. But it's a year to early for us, we are not selling our UK assets and moving over until Easter next year. Can I get finance from somewhere to buy the plot now. It's on at $400k plus any expenses ?? I can put down 25 %. Any options, or just hope it doesn't sell.
  20. For the skills test, I'd go with Vetassess. Vic uni are actually the ones know to be slow and very picky. Thats what I did. As you don't have a AQF3, you will have to do the practical test, that's the bit that can take some waiting for. As the metal fabs ones only run 3-4 times a year, if demand is there. As you can see from my time line, I didn't take that long. Although I went our and got a AQF3 by means of RPL before the visa proccess. Both to speed things up further down the line, but also as my employment history was minimal so to speak (I'm the business owner).
  21. Wow, that sounds like one hell of a tough market. I guess the local agents must be walking around like gods, earning a plenty. Figures of love, not....
  22. Jumping in at a different angle here. But keep reading all the doom and gloom in the papers, about the 50,00 jobs that will be lost, Victoria and SA will fall over, the skies will cloud over, children will starve etc....All because the 3 car companies have pulled the plug and will no longer make local cars or received state money to do so.... I keep wondering how much of it all is just hot air. After all thinking back to 2005/2006 in the Uk. We had Rover finally give up and Peugoet close Coventry. Both of which made fare more cars than the Oz trio. Did the Uk fall over, I don't even think the West Midlands did. Yes there where some tough times, but it all healed without mass fallout. Surely manufacturing in Victoria does not depend totally on cars, I always thought is was far from that. Will there be any positive articles about the future in the press ???
  23. Looking at this ourselves. We had always expected to rent to 'keep options open'. but looking at the finer points and costs. If we can get a good market rate, selling will be better. Again when we get 'permission to let' from the bank (Barclays). it will only last for 2 years, then we would have to be on a BTL mortgage. Yes we are in the South of the UK, so rent will cover payment and leave a little over to fees and vacancy periods (until the BTL rate applies). But all houses that are lived in need maintenance over time. We live in a late eighties 'estate house'. all the heating and cooling, causes cracks over the year between the skirting and wall boards. All things that would need tidying for a sale to get the best price. Can we really trust someone else to ensure it's done correctly to get the best sale price ??? Price may be going up, but only by a few percent. If we have to fly back to sort anything out, that's a good chunk of the market gain lost of airfare. I also agree with someone elses comments about making a clean break and would you really want to slot back into your old life ????
  24. Just don't bother with the 'moonlit sanctuary' near Pearcedale. Despite all the press on it in various guides etc. We found it rather small, run down and naff !!
  25. Can I use this tread to pop a quick question from folks in more know than me. Traffic law: Are you required to stop to let buses pull out ?? I was driving along the esplanade road in Mornington last week, passing a bus indicating to come out of a stop. 2 cars in from of me, nothing behind. So naturally I just carried on, expecting the big white and yellow bus to pull out behind me. He decided to just pull out, only just missing my rear quarter as I passed. Then despite my driving close to the 60/70 limit, he managed to catch up with me a drive a gnats dick away from my rear, until he had to stop just before Mount Martha. So was it my mistake ???
