    Airlines

After having been several times now on different airlines. I have decided they are more or less all the same. You sit on a modern Airbus or Boeing tin can for many hours. Eat salty reheated food and watch some films, struggle to try and sleep and keep looking at the screen map, wondering 'are we any nearer' (of course those who can afford the pointy end may have different view) So for me now, it comes down to arrival times, aircraft type (I love the A380 over a 777) and price. You will get good and bad flight on all airlines. Meaning my March flight is with Emirates, even though I'm planning a few days stop over in Singapore. As I wanted A380 all the way and arrive in Singapore early afternoon, not late evening. Even though this mean a stop in the giant glitzy over priced shopping mega city, aka Dubai. Only costing us £ 200 more for all 4 of us.
  2. Chill. I may only be 41, but I have seen 2 distinct slumps in my working life in UK. The UK has also transformed into a more service led sector and lost great depths of manufacturing. But it really is all a cycle. There will always be ups and downs, but life goes on. Things work out / bounce back. Worry to much and it will kill your mind. Peace
  3. does the real world really see brexit as real ??. I always thought the UK doesn't have the spine for it. Some healthy movement past 2 days, touched 2.09 $/£. I suppose all we really need is folks to feel confident that interest rates will rise this year. Or are we all scared again with Soros's comments the other day.
  4. taking our 6 month old samsung eco buble. Even if we buy over there, time has told me always need a spare washer (gone through 4 in 11 years here). Hence bought a more expensive on last time. Still thinking of turning those tunes off !!
  5. well we just opened a savings and standard account with nab before arrival (picked up cards on last visit). that way its instant access , even via single debit card in shops etc. currently paying 1.9 %. far better the crap 0.1 % uk bank would pay us.:chatterbox:
  6. 2.02 today, going in wrong direction. where the hell is my 2.20 plus. can't be profit taking / shorting ?
  7. to help with id for rentals, buying car etc. One way ticket this time, so started to worry about detail now.
  8. ok slight hijack here, but I've been searching and don't want to open a new thread. Looking at how to apply for driving licence at vic roads, within days of our arrival in March. To help with ID points etc. But it seems they want proof of address !!. How to get around that, as we will only be in a temp rental ?
  9. Well I'm still confused about my two, who will be ready to join a school after Easter 2016. (We arrive early March) Born Oct 2006 & Sept 2007. Will they be year 4 & 5 or stay year 3 & 4 as they would be if in the UK ??
  10. US fed resv slated to increase rates tomorrow. could this push further changes ?
  11. well, yes with my children 8 & 9. More fun and light adventure in mind. Only problem I notice with booking the hotel rooms with Singapore Air. Is you can only book 2 adults and 1 child per room, not 2 children. You have to note the extra child down as a 'special request message' and they will do there best to accomadate you. Hardly reassuring !!
  12. Yes we will be flying with them and have been looking at their deals. Just a limited choice. Trying to make the one way trip down there a bit of a holiday. Make use of oppertunity while transiting through. Got to avoid the bore of Dubai again.
  13. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children 8 & 9. Planning on a few days stop over in Singapore Late Feb / Early March. On our next trip to Melbourne, being a one way trip this time. Just looking for any hotel recommendations, as hard to judge. Best suited for a family etc. We plan to visit Sentosa and other bayside attractions. Happy with any recommendations there as well.
  14. but I thought this guy was arrested for no real reason ?, only being a bike gang member, or did I read it wrong?
  15. ok, so am I reading this right. If I only have a visa and get arrested for anything (dropping litter, car crash, traffic violation) . I will have my visa cancelled and be locked up on Christmas Island, until I'm sent back to the Uk (if it still exists by then). Although if I get the years under my belt and get citizenship I will be safe (or have to give up my Uk status, to be only Aussy).
  16. oh come on. the Op is a troll. You can't claim to be cultured one minute, the say you've 'got a kid' the next. and why does a country having a history really matter. Try living for the present day and making your own history, not dwelling on a countries worth. If it has some ruins or not.
  17. Thanks for replies. As I have just sold a business and still have another trading in background. Likely to have some mail and not happy for others to scan it. I did look at using a redirection address company, but even they seem mad on address proof 'due to money laundering'... Still plenty of other things to worry about.
  18. ok, I may be mad thinking about this all of a sudden, but.... How to work mail forwarding from the Uk. Yes, I have used the Royal Mail service for home and business many times before, and yes they offer an international service. But when I leave these shores for good soon, I will not actually know my postal address in Au (perhaps temp one, if that). So how do I set it up ?? I need to stop mail going to my house from day one. Also dealing with Royal Mail over the years, they just love lots of proof of address in person to do most things, so can't pop over from Melbourne just to do that. Do Aus Post offer a forwarding service ? I can get RM to send to.... and no...don't want to get family in UK to handle it But then, many folks on here must know the simple answer ??
  19. no, the Western powers will not let that happen. To many power plays in the background, they want to win. Yes plenty of bad news today with Glencore, Redcar and even Shell (Baring). She'l be all right mate....
  20. just learn the simple things. after all they just want you to explain how to work things out. like how to work out the area of a circle. they don't expect you to know everything though.
  21. for mine, it was really just to check what you know. it should be pretty obvious if your a fake. They where very up on safety questions. What gear to wear for welding, eye protection, fume protection. What welding process has higher risk of these. ie fumes for arc, eyes for tig etc... As I can tig, asked what colour tungsten for each metal, that would catch out a faker. Key was to say no if you can't. They don't expect you to know / do, everything. I was asked about fluxcore, never done it. So just said no straight away. When they ask how you do something, always good to mention what tools to use as well. Ie, when asked how to check dims of part. Mention tape if it's big or vernier if small. Just sound confident. Mine was a remote interview over web, but still managed to build up a rapour with the guy. Talked about the broader subject, like more cnc machinery improving production proccess etc. Good luck.
  22. VIC Well the chip shop (called Beach Box) in Mount Martha has vinegar on the counter last time I was in. Service not the best and mad in summer (like 1 hour wait)...but a good choice of fish, dims etc. Have heard the one further up in Mornington is better, (on Wilsons Road), yet to try.... TBA on vinegar there..
  23. Just looking to see if there are any hidden issues with my current thinking. Looking at an option to buy a block of land in Vic with current funds. Then when time allows for plans etc (some months), to get a house build later. Would need to finance the build. Will this be an issue, as we bought the land outright before. ?? not the normal path ?? Land cost $500, estimate build cost (4 bed, 2 bath, split level) $350.
  24. We are planning to sell our house on South Coast. I would not like to have to think about slotting back into old life if we did return. Even where we are (SO32) house prices will not rise much in the 2 years our mortgage will let us rent it out. Plus we have had things go wrong this year that make you think about the hassle and cost of remote renting. (boiler, leaks, drive damage by lorry). Agents will take care of it all yes,but at a cost by their team of 'friends'. Only a few more months until we are back in Mount Martha ......
  25. ahh oil prices. Of course these are NOT being lowered by a US led force hand in hand with Euro land all behind closed doors. Designed to force Russia into recession !! Although they are already hurting the Us light and shale producers. No pain to gain..
