  1. The changing weather thing in one day is real. Was in the CBD on the 5th, lovely warm day, only a t-shirt on. Left Victoria market as it was closing just before 4pm. Suddenly started to cloud over. Driving back over the river, winds picked up. Leaves and rubbish swirling around the inner city streets, people could hardly stand up. Was on park road a few minutes later, when a big tree was blown down across 4 lanes on city bound traffic and onto a car. Got back to Mount Martha just before 6 (after a short fuel stop), to warm sunshine and mild winds. As for the beaches. My kids can't get over the crystal clear shallow water, bay side on the peninsular. Picking up star fish to look at (and put back where found). All safe fun. With wilder waters South and West if they want to surf when older. Yes winter can be cold, but the quality of the housing is part of this I think. Coming from the South of the UK, we fell in love with Melbourne with ease.
  2. I always thought folk said 'you can tell when there is a Canadian in the room, because they will tell you (they are not american)'. Must say all the Canadians I have met have been very friendly sorts.
  3. So where are we talking about Eng32, or is it a secret ??
  4. Thanks. Some ideas of what to do on our 2 weeks reccy. We arrive 27-12-2013, staying in Mount Martha.
  5. So at what level does the 'big country' plan actually work. You know, when you have such a size population, growth across all sectors becomes self sustaining in parts ???.
  6. I think your in the wrong job for a visa even. Too many locals being laid off, hence they pulled the occupation from the s.o.l. Quantas / John holland, more or less finished in Melbourne......
  7. Surely that program would have run out of steam by now...Are they gonna have the same presenter, with her perma smile and sliding tones..
  8. Anyone know how this will work. I see the figure is 28 %. Is this taxed on the 'profit' on the house, from when we leave the Uk as tax payers. Until we sell as Aus pr's ??? Surely it's not on the whole value of the house ?? Otherwise we would sell now, rather than rent it out for 3 years max. Also either way. How can they enforce it if we never come back ????
  9. Very little choice these days. So many just code share and put you on other airlines. So it's really about the baggage allowance for me. Royal Brunie will always be the cheapest, but only have a 20kg allowance on the basic fares !!!. Same for Cathay, who are never the cheapest !!!. I always look around, but end up on Quantas, who give you a 30 kg baggage allowance. Prefer the QF10 & 9 times as well.
  10. Thanks for the reply. Some of the listings on stayz are out of date, showing availability when they don't have any. Only one we found was $3k a week !!!!! Who had no bookings what so ever for his very basic house over the xmas break. When I asked if he would be a deal, he came back with $7500 for 15 nights, less a $ 500 discount !!! So we are just to book up 2 weeks in mid February.........
  11. Like most, take the kids to our great filthy capital to see the museums etc. I fancy a few days in North Wales, used to love all the little railways and caverns. The battle fields in France / Belg is a good one...
  12. Have to say as a true southerner all my life, those stats actually match me perfectly. (except I would put Melbourne up a little higher and wipe out the casino / pokey sh1t). I know someone who lives near Perth. He tells me the Northern burbs are getting worse for expats from North Uk, all the footy shirt wearers........
  13. I know it's the wrong time of year, but time off work is an issue. Coming over to validate our new 189 visa's. First choice was to arrive a day or 2 after Christmas, for a 2 weeks stay. Looking for a unit for 2 adults & 2 small kids. Mornington, Mt. Martha or outwards. Can't afford the mega buck pads that still have availability on normal letting sites (stays & mornington tourist site) Last call out, before we give up and go for mid February. Anyone !!!:GEEK:
  14. So it looks like there was a whole bunch of August grants recently. Hoping the best for those still waiting. Still to busy at work for it to sink in, will have to wait until Saturday for that..
  15. Well I did the Metal Fabs interview with Vetassess, over the phone only. They are all just questions you should know the answer to. Your not expected to know everything and it's best to say so if you don't know the answer. It was very basic stuff, just getting the conversation into a flow really to see if your a fake. They do ask a few questions on safety, like what you would wear for a particular operation and what the key danger points are. So make sure you use plenty of explained safety answers. Good luck
  16. Heading for Melbourne at the moment. Hoping to validate just after Christmas, but will have to put it back if flights and rentals are to much $$ at that time of year. Also to keep folks happy with the stats. It was a direct grant, no comms from case offer. Turns out it was Brisbane team 33.
  17. OMFG. Direct grant today....Waiting for it to sink in now......There was me hoping it might be before Christmas, even told the wife it may be February with the January holidays.....
  18. Well we are into another month now, so hoping it's all getting closer. No c/o as yet .. as far as I know.:embarrassed:
  19. Wow !! how quick. I take it your off shore same as me. Did you claim points for work experience ?? Just wondering why so quick ? Hoping my grant will be as quick (I am using same agent as well).
  20. Thanks. There was me thinking they left it with you a couple of days !!!. So you really have to be prepared, like the practice pictures in this thread ? Still trying to figure out how a family of 4 will manage waiting for the washer, dryer, fridge, freezer. Unless we are in a holiday rental for the 10 weeks the cube takes ??
  21. Quick q if I may. Looking at the large cube myself. How long do they leave it with you to load in the Uk. Then un-load in Oz ????
  22. Checked with agent today, still no case officer. Getting near the 9 week mark.
  23. Not more waiting.... I'm just hoping to get a co, so they can ask me for something. All that time doing stuff to get the applications in kept me busy. Now there is nothing for me to do other than wait......
  24. Thanks for the replies folks. Yes it is the job market for me to start with, then jobs / further education options for my kids in 10 years I am more concerned about. Newcastle just had more of a 'real' Australia look about it. Don't get me wrong, I was totally smitten with Melbourne and the Mornington area on my visits. Just found myself looking further and further out to break that 'same old urban clutter' feel with the housing. (I liked the area around Belgrave etc). Anyway we will have 2 weeks max to validate, so will have to decide if kids can take another flight up to NSW (plus the $1k for the flights alone).
  25. Yes I sent mega loads of stuff to the agent, even though only claiming 3 years work history to get the 60 points. So hoping for a direct grant also. Although that will mean never knowing about case officer, but as using an agent, not really in touch with the on line system anyway.
