  1. I think people do get really preoccuppied with the comparisons between UK and Australian schools. The UK schools do have a good reputations overseas of course and likewise Australian schools do compete with each other in terms of reputation. But overall if you get your child into a reasonable state school here, they should do fine. I say "should" because of course it is always a case of your child doing well in his or her subjects and that's a combination of teachers/child/parents. But if I was beinging children to Australia to start a new school I wouldnt have too many issues, I would just look at what areas to avoid rather than those areas to actually put them in. Here in Melbourne, private schools have a reputatation of turning out over-priveledged kids who dont neccessarily do too well. You are better sending them to a good state school IMHO and avoid paying the school fees.
  2. If you get good jobs and build a house etc. Dont do what we did and sell up and go back to the UK. Then you really will have an OMG what have we done moment. Those are the worst feelings of regret when you give something away that youd built for yourselves.
  3. Take everything off the bike, just keep the chain.
  4. Lol. I think you need to take the top layer off the doona when it gets to Summer, otherwise you will boil to death. So yeah change the sheets while you do it.
  5. I can't believe I went back to England, just bloody madness.
  6. Whats the difference between Tony Abbot and a Shopping Cart. A Shopping Cart changes direction only when it's pushed.
  7. Mvin Oct or Nov is a good time. There are still vacancies advertised for positions starting in the new year.
  8. Dont know why you would want to be working in England either.
  9. At least in Australia they are cracking down on the professional jobless and those who want to bring their own particular flavour of radicalism here.
  10. Yeah coffee is a lot better as is the general stadard of living for most people.
  11. Go there and don't come back like i did!
  12. I think I meant isolation as in the physical ie not being able to interact with people. That to me is isolation. If you live in a city in Australia, you are not really isolation, as you have contact with other people. If your mind is wandering back to Europe as in your want to be there, then yes, you may feel isolated, but that is what i meant by a mindset. If you are happy to live and work in Australia then you surely do not think that way. To me it's a case of where is "home".
  13. I don't agree with the comment about isolation, you can feel isolated anywhere if you have that mindset. It's like you have neighbours in Australia like anywhere, in fact you could say people are very welcoming here, as you have a common bond with fellow ex-pats. There is just too much fun to be had here if you want to do anything, its possible. To me if you want to live your life in the here and now, Australia offers that, every weekend can be an adventure. If you live in UK travel is an option but really people live for those weeks out of the UK in my opinion.
  14. Yay! Congrats! Welcome to Australia!!
  15. Its terrible when you realise you gave up a great life for nothing.
  16. Well you can't live on welfare, you have to be able to get debt free, and that takes hard work :-)
  17. The homes aren't very nice there if you haven't the money. If you have the money yes you can live in a very nice terrace if that's what your after.
  18. I think it can be a daunting process moving country. For me it worked out perfectly well the first time, unfortunately things happened which made us return, and that was very hard to deal with. Living in Australia was for us a great adventure and we loved the lifestyle here. I'm only now trying to get that back again the second time round but in some ways it is harder and in others it is easier.
  19. DONT GO BACK !!! BE WARNED (The UK is suffering a severe slump).
  20. interesting question, more immigrant means more mix of cultures.
  21. I love big trees, nice big gummy ones on a nice big plot in an oasis of a backyard with space for the BBQ and mates to come around for beers. You can substitute that for a horrible cobbled backyard in a rundown terrace in Harrogate but its just not the same
