  1. What are you doing? The value packs of tim tams are only $2 in iga! Bargain!
  2. We are very thankful for our log burner today! its pretty wild out there! Glad we got all our admin done this morning as it started chucking it down on the drive home. Been listening to it battering the house all afternoon!
  3. every rental we have seen even without dogs state you have to have carpets professionally cleaned anyway! They are suck sticklers here!!
  4. I think if you have dogs before you have kids you have a responsibility towards them. They are not hassle, they are your family, at least thats the way i see pets. I had two dogs which we sadly lost last year before we came out to perth. Never would i consider getting rid of them due to having kids. That said, what kind of dogs do you have and how old are they? If they are elderly or have medical conditions that would make the flight and quarantine stressful for them, then you need to consider that under vet advice. I am guessing they are pretty big and energetic if they need three or four walks a day!
  5. If you read my post i didnt say the english were more self important, just as self important. I know all about aussie arrogance having grown up in SA and been part of the massive sporting rivalry and competition between the nations, as well as meeting aussies along the way. at the end of the day everyone can argue their points til the cows come home, but everyones opinions are based on their own life experience and cannot be taken away from them.
  6. this applies to my experience of the UK as well so it happens there too. I had a few people ask why i would ever want to leave the uk and then get really funny with me when i gave my reasons. Each to their own. The english are just as self important in my experience.
  7. Fantastic nicola!!! So pleased for you guys!
  8. I have even seen trainee jobs across a number of field that require two years experience!!!! I mean wtf??? Who goes for trainee jobs when they already have experience? The market is really difficult. I managed to be into system support from an admin in background in the uk but apparently that is not good enough here. i really don't want to be negative to those considering the move, but being here now i cannot see how people coming in the next few months or years are going to find it any easier. Its going to get worse and all i can hope is we find jobs now before more people arrive. Although with no local experience they wont be any better off than us!!!! Plus the visa fees are just horrific now. If we were doing it this year we wouldnt have been able to afford the costs plus the move in a short space of time.
  9. I have been looking at admin jobs at unis here in perth and without specific uni admin experience they are not interested. In fact for most roles, if you do not have exactly what they are looking for then you go straight to the bottom of the pile, if you make the pile at all. Things are hard here re landing a job. If you have a great job that you like and have only just got, maybe you should have a long hard think about making the move. Im not saying dont do it, but just consider everything before taking the plunge.
  10. I would be interested in this, as we arrived end of april as well and will be submitting our first one soon too. in my mind, as we paid tax on earnings in the uk, we cant be liable for tax on it here. But as to whether it needs to be declared i would like clarification on this too.
  11. You will definitiely be asked to pay this back, from the date you left the UK. We had to fill in forms declaring we were overseas landlords for our house so as part of this it has all been swept up and our child benefit stopped. This was only £80 every 4 weeks so not sure what else you could have been on to amass several thousand pounds!
  12. Nice one peach. The day we applied all the systems were crashing due to a new system being launched that morning, so we got no receipt and had to wait for cards to arrive in post! Did set us back a lot of time!!
  13. Hahahahahahahahahaha love it!!!! Exactly what i was thinking!!!!!
  14. First thing you can do is apply for tfn online. after a few days apply for your medicare card. Can take up to 4 weeks to arrive. Once it does you can apply for your driving license. once you get that, you can pretty much get anything as thats the main id you need! in amongst all this fit in looking for work and houses, and let the fun begin!!!!
  15. Fantastic Quoll!!! ok will persevere with the longer format for now then. I havent looked for another job for 7 years so finding this all a bit daunting! If there are selection criteria i ensure these are addressed very obviously in the cover letter, or seperate doc as stated in the job description. I just dont like the idea of tailoring my cv each time, i would rather write a very specific cover letter outlining how i meet the requirements then faff and tweak my cv.
  16. Thanks, i have read some of it. The first post says no more than 4 pages, and the example one i was sent was at least ten!!!
  17. Hi all, most of the advice is have read and been given is to keep my resume to 2 pages. Recently i was asked to elaborate on my resume as Perth employers prefer more detail?? I was sent an example that was almost a page for each job this person had had and it was around 6 jobs! Seemed really long to me? My short cv had 6 points for my most recent job but more detail in the profile section as well. Previous admin jobs had 3 bullet points each. Is this too little?? Starting to question all my applications now!! i have done a new one with a whole page of bullet points for my last role which i was in for over 7 years. any advice or experiences out there?? thanks!
  18. Ok thanks! Its a verbatim one, so a brand a normally use for cds. Are there at usbs that are well know for higher writing speeds? Or do they all differ?
  19. Update! Got medicare cards today and oh's tfn last week. Things are coming together!
  20. We got it in kmart. The usb as well. how do i tell what the speeds are? If i plug it into the pc and select it will it be available to view on a 'properties' type function? Not sure what crystal diskmark is. thanks!
  21. Hi all, we have bought a Thomson PVR device and a 16gb usb so we could record some tv to watch later and then we can fast forward the ads! So many ads! however, it will record for around a minute or two and then stop and i cannot for the life of me work out why! Instructions that came with it were useless. surely a 16gb usb should be sufficient to record at least one or two films or tv shows. Yet it stops after a couple of minutes of recording, and then wont record anything else on the planner. is there something i am doing wrong or is this device faulty and or flipping useless??? help appreciated! thanks!
  22. Its not so much the work, he has felt like is with every job change in the uk as well and it takes him a while to settle into all his roles. Im not sure if he really doesnt like the work or if its all because its very different to what he was doing before and his expectation was that it wasnt going to be so different. He has only been there just over a week so i am trying to get his to give it a fair go. If after a few weeks or months its still the same, then of course he can look for other work, im just not sure how much of a difference it will make as it will mean yet another change and it may trigger the anxiety again. Its such a tough place to be, and i dont think i am helping as i am quite happy here, but that may because i havent started work yet!!
  23. Hi all, having llved in South Africa before I am coping ok so far being here, but my oh who is english is struggling. he has never been great with job changes and his anxiety has set in since he started working here. He was awake a lot at night so i got prosomnia as recommended by the pharmacist. However, he is feeling stressed and anxious in the day and i was wondering if there is anything we can get over the counter as we havent got our medicare numbers or cards yet. I will pop up there later and see what they recommed but thought i would ask here too. Just need to get a job so he can be a househusband and i can support the family, haha!!

    Sky+ box

Our sky plus box went for a fiver on ebay, and the sky plus hd for 25. Both collection only so you may get more if you post. wish i had known about the pvr option as there are so many ads here i cant be bothered to watch anything now!! Bought a pvr and usb but one program fills up a 16gb usb??? Wtf? Anyone know if thats normal or am i doing something wrong? When we recorded on hd in the uk it wasnt more than 4gb or so per film, so how can a 16gb not be enough to record more than one 1hr show?
  25. Have never heard of it being offered in the uk but worth asking if you want it sorted. If you want to wait they are free here, but docs wont do it without a medicare number. Immunisation clinics will though. My son is booked in for his next week.
