  1. Yeah, wish he had stayed with the Jesuits. But isn't he technically a Brit, being London born?
  2. It's nothing to do with money. Top of my list of "most appalling Australians" would be Rupert Murdoch and Clive Palmer - both billionaires. Also Paul Hogan is one I can't stand. He found fame and fortune playing the stereotypical, salt of earth, Aussie bloke. Then he deserts his wife and Australia and runs off with his young co-star to live the Hollywood lifestyle. Now he's nearly broke, she's dumped him and he's back in Oz doing one-man shows trying to make a quid. Got no sympathy for him.
  3. There are no "advantages" just differences. You have to experience both to know which suits you.
  4. I picked grapes years ago in Victoria in Mildura and also Nyah West/Swan Hill district. Should be plenty of work around in March. Check this website. http://www.downundr.com/jobs-and-work/fruitpicking-towns/location/mildura/1

  6. You could see she had been coached. Probably rehearsed everything she said. No real empathy for the victim or her family.
  7. Yes, I'm an expert at psychopath spotting. I'm one myself.
  8. I saw that interview yesterday. It was a brilliant performance. Confirmed my belief she is a psychopath.
  9. I spent a few days in Darwin last year and loved it. Having said that, I don't think I could live there - but would recommend it to anyone for a short break.
  10. Don't worry. Before Abbott could do that the Libs would dump him and install Malcolm Turnball (we can only hope).
  11. Yes, but you know they will never be grateful to the British people. They will thank Allah for delivering them to a safe, compassionate land of plenty.
  12. And what about those idiots yesterday in the NT? A guy jumped in a billabong and was taken by a croc. So they shot two crocs and when they opened them up they found they weren't the ones responsible. If you venture into croc or shark infested water you know the risk and have to be willing to take the consequences. Leave the wildlife alone. I don't go into their environment and they don't come into my pub.
  13. Yeah, Chikos have to be deep fried but dim sims are nice steamed and covered with with soy sauce but if they're deep fried I just have salt on them. Don't really know what's in Chikos but I suspect it might be cabbage and carrots with some tasty spices. Don't think there is any meat in Chikos or dim sims.
  14. You don't know what you're missing. I stopped at a roadhouse yesterday on the Hume Hwy and had a Chiko roll, 3 Dim Sims and 3 potato cakes (all deep fried) washed down with chocolate milk. Real Oz food and delicious. None of that sushi and seaweed crap for me.
  15. The Mornington Peninsula an hour south of Melbourne is lovely and is much favored by Brits.
  16. Sydney! - Don't go there! It's just too expensive and much overrated.
  17. Mordialloc, Mentone, Edithvale or Aspendale might suit. Near the beach and on the train line. close to Mentone Girls Grammar and St Bede's College. Good Luck. http://www.realestate.com.au/rent/in-aspendale+gardens%2c+vic+3195%3b+/list-1
  18. It's rare to see a possum during the day but yesterday a Ring-tail possum ran straight past me climbed the ladder to the pool and jumped in. This morning I found a Noisy Minah sitting on the ground. I picked it up and put it in a bowl of water where it revived. So now I've put the sprinkler on a fine spray. There are now lots of different birds out there cooling off. Cool change is due to hit Melbourne at 8pm tonight.
  19. There's a heap of episodes on Youtube which I have watched. I know it's unrealistic and for most it's just a free holiday in Oz. But I do enjoy the revisted episodes and seeing those people who have settled happily in Oz.

    Hello

Good luck. Getting to Oz now seems like a complicated, expensive process. Back when I came they would take anyone. If you had ten pounds you where in - and got to enjoy a lovely 4 week cruise.
  21. I have a relative who has been in Oz for over 5 decades. She has never been homesick for the UK and has never been back for a visit. However, she has never settled anywhere for very long. No sooner has she bought a new house she becomes malcontent, decides it's not quite right and starts planning to move again. All her houses have been in the Mornington Peninsula/Frankston area. In Victoria when you buy a house you pay a big load of stamp duty. The resullt is she could have bought another house with all the stamp duty she has paid over the years. Obviously she has a psychological problem and probably would have benefited from some professional counseling. Maybe pingpongers have a similar condition and it doesn't matter where they are they will never be content.
  22. I can hear Benny Hill saying something like "you will need a good cock"!
  23. More people should try Melbourne before giving up and heading home. It has a totally different feel to Brisbane or Sydney. Yes it does have a long winter but it is fairly mild. It has a great arts, theatre, culinary and sporting culture. There are lots of brilliant wineries to visit. It has ski resorts for winter and beaches for summer.
  24. It is possible to live without a car in Oz but why would you want to? There's so much to do and see and a car gives you the freedom to go where and when you want to.
